1Three Times and Out

By

Book's cover

The true story of M. C. Simmons, a Canadian soldier captured by the German Army during the early days of World War I. We read of his sixteen months of imprisonment, his encounters with other captured troops of the other Allied armies and his observations of the nature of his captors and their countrymen. Most compellingly we read of his escape from POW camp, his recapture and punishment, and then the capture and punishment following his second escape attempt, climaxing in his third escape attempt and daring travel through enemy territory against all odds. In McClung's words, "Private Simmons is a close and accurate observer who sees clearly and talks well. He tells a straightforward, unadorned tale, every sentence of which is true, and convincing." (Summary by the narrator)

3Sowing Seeds in Danny

By

Nellie L. McClung (1873-1951) is a Canadian icon - a feminist, social activist, author, and political leader. When she was a child, she moved to Manitoba with her pioneering family of farmers. As a teacher in rural Manitoba, she was a keen observer of village life at the turn of the century, and her first novel "Sowing Seeds in Danny” (1908) was a poignant snapshot of daily life on the Canadian prairies and a national best-seller, which sold more than 100,000 copies. As a suffragette, she led the campaign for women's enfranchisement, which saw Manitoba become the first province in Canada to grant the vote to women in 1916. By 1918, the same right was granted at the national level, before either the US (1920) or UK (1928). After moving to Alberta, she was elected to that province's legislature in 1921, where she championed children’s health care and women’s rights. As a member of the "famous five" women, her statue now graces the the grounds of the Manitoba legislature, to commemorate the 1929 court challenge, which allowed women to be recognized as “persons” and eligible to sit as federal senators. - Summary by ASharma

In Painted Fires, she tells the story of Helmi Milander, a young immigrant from Finland in the years before WWI. “Young, strong, and unafraid”, Helmi’s story weaves together the threads of McClung’s social activism, including the futility of war, woman’s suffrage, and the fate of immigrants in early 20th century Canada. As with Sowing Seeds, it is a poignant introduction to the hardscrabble struggles of turn-of-the-century prairie life. (Summary by ASharma)

As an author, she is best known for The Pearl Watson Trilogy, whose main character is reminiscent of that other Canadian heroine, Anne of Green Gables. When published in 1908, Sowing Seeds in Danny was a national bestseller, selling more than 100,000 copies and introducing the young Pearl Watson, the Watson clan, and the villagers of Millford, Manitoba. The story of Pearl's teen years was told in The Second Chance, and Purple Springs is the third volume in the trilogy, which recounts Pearl's coming of age as a school teacher on the Canadian prairies. - Summary by ASharma
