This paper reviews recent work on a new geometric object called a bundle gerbe and discusses some new examples arising in quantum field theory. One application is to an Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index theory construction of the bundle of fermionic Fock spaces parametrized by vector potentials in odd space dimensions and a proof that this leads in a simple manner to the known Schwinger terms (Mickelsson-Faddeev cocycle) for the gauge group action. This gives an explicit computation of the Dixmier-Douady class of the associated bundle gerbe. The method works also in other cases of fermions in external fields (external gravitational field, for example) provided that the APS theorem can be applied; however, we have worked out the details only in the case of vector potentials. Another example, in which the bundle gerbe curvature plays a role, arises from the WZW model on Riemann surfaces. A further example is the `existence of string structures' question. We conclude by showing how global Hamiltonian anomalies fit within this framework.

A continuing effort to develop carbon-nanotube-based field emitters (cold cathodes) as high-current-density electron sources has yielded an optimized device design and a fabrication scheme to implement the design. One major element of the device design is to use a planar array of bundles of carbon nanotubes as the field-emission tips and to optimize the critical dimensions of the array (principally, heights of bundles and distances between them) to obtain high area-averaged current density and high reliability over a long operational lifetime a concept that was discussed in more detail in Arrays of Bundles of Carbon Nanotubes as Field Emitters (NPO-40817), NASA Tech Briefs, Vol. 31, No. 2 (February 2007), page 58. Another major element of the design is to configure the gate electrodes (anodes used to extract, accelerate, and/or focus electrons) as a ring that overhangs a recess wherein the bundles of nanotubes are located, such that by virtue of the proximity between the ring and the bundles, a relatively low applied potential suffices to generate the large electric field needed for emission of electrons.

It is shown that Maxwell's equations in media without source can be written as a contact Hamiltonian vector field restricted to a Legendre submanifold, where this submanifold is in a fiber space of a bundle and is generated by either electromagnetic energy functional or co-energy functional. Then, it turns out that Legendre duality for this system gives the induction oriented formulation of Maxwell's equations and field intensity oriented one. In this work, we determine explicitly the anomaly line bundle of the abelian self-dual field theory over the space of metrics modulo diffeomorphisms, including its torsion part. Inspired by the work of Belov and Moore, we propose a non-covariant action principle for a pair of Euclidean self-dual fields on a generic oriented Riemannian manifold. The corresponding path integral allows to study the global properties of the partition function over the space of metrics modulo diffeomorphisms. We show that the anomaly bundle for a pair of self-dual fields differs from the determinant bundle of the Dirac operator coupled to chiral spinors by a flat bundle that is not trivial if the underlying manifold has middle-degree cohomology, and whose holonomies are determined explicitly. We briefly sketch the relevance of this result for the computation of the global gravitational anomaly of the self-dual field theory, that will appear in another paper.

Given a smooth manifold $M$ and a Lie group $G$, we consider parallel transport maps --groupoid homomorphisms from a path groupoid in $M$ to $G$-- as an alternative description of principal $G$-bundles with smooth connections on them. Using a cellular decomposition $\mathscr{C}$ of $M$, and a system of paths associated to $\mathscr{C}$, we define a homotopical equivalence relation of parallel transport maps, leading to the concept of an extended lattice gauge (ELG) field. A lattice gauge field, as used in Lattice Gauge Theory, is part of the data contained in an ELG field, but the latter contains additional topological information of local nature, sufficient to reconstruct a principal $G$-bundle up to equivalence, in the spirit of Barrett. Our constructed space of ELG fields on a given pair $(M, \mathscr{C})$ is a covering space for a finite dimensional Lie group, whose connected components parametrize equivalence classes of principal $G$-bundles on $M$. Following a theorem of Pachner, we give a criterion to determine when two ELG fields over different cell decompositions $\mathscr{C}$ and $\mathscr{C}'$ define equivalent bundles. As a first concrete physical application, we define a simple operation that captures the geometric essence of the 't Hooft loop operator in the theory of quantum gauge fields, and study its relation with the bundle structure of an ELG field.

Imaging bundles provide a convenient way to translate a spatially coherent image, yet conventional imaging bundles made from silica fibre optics typically remain expensive with large losses due to poor filling factors (~40%). We present the characterisation of a novel polymer imaging bundle made from poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) that is considerably cheaper and a better alternative to silica imaging bundles over short distances (~1 m; from the middle to the edge of a telescope's focal plane). The large increase in filling factor (92% for the polymer imaging bundle) outweighs the large increase in optical attenuation from using PMMA (1 dB/m) instead of silica (10^{-3} dB/m). We present and discuss current and possible future multi-object applications of the polymer imaging bundle in the context of astronomical instrumentation including: field acquisition, guiding, wavefront sensing, narrow-band imaging, aperture masking, and speckle imaging. The use of PMMA limits its use in low light applications (e.g. imaging of galaxies), however it is possible to fabricate polymer imaging bundles from a range of polymers that are better suited to the desired science.

For manifolds $\cal M$ of noncompact type endowed with an affine connection (for example, the Levi-Civita connection) and a closed 2-form (magnetic field) we define a Hilbert algebra structure in the space $L^2(T^*\cal M)$ and construct an irreducible representation of this algebra in $L^2(\cal M)$. This algebra is automatically extended to polynomial in momenta functions and distributions. Under some natural conditions this algebra is unique. The non-commutative product over $T^*\cal M$ is given by an explicit integral formula. This product is exact (not formal) and is expressed in invariant geometrical terms. Our analysis reveals this product has a front, which is described in terms of geodesic triangles in $\cal M$. The quantization of $\delta$-functions induces a family of symplectic reflections in $T^*\cal M$ and generates a magneto-geodesic connection $\Gamma$ on $T^*\cal M$. This symplectic connection entangles, on the phase space level, the original affine structure on $\cal M$ and the magnetic field. In the classical approximation, the $\hbar^2$-part of the quantum product contains the Ricci curvature of $\Gamma$ and a magneto-geodesic coupling tensor.

The paper contains a differential-geometric foundations for an attempt to formulate Lagrangian (canonical) quantum field theory on fibre bundles. In it the standard Hilbert space of quantum field theory is replace with a Hilbert bundle; the former playing a role of a (typical) fibre of the letter one. Suitable sections of that bundle replace the ordinary state vectors and the operators on the system's Hilbert space are transformed into morphisms of the same bundle. In particular, the field operators are mapped into corresponding field morphisms.
