The current review aims to address this gap by focusing on identifying the best strategies and practices for the prevention of mental illness and problematic substance use in children and youth. By synthesizing evidence across diverse interventions, this scoping review seeks to provide a comprehensive understanding of effective approaches that can inform policy, practice, and future research. The inclusion of study designs that address effectiveness [(at minimum quasi-experimental designs (i.e. at least a comparison group)] and a relevant grey literature search (e.g., past 3 years major reports) will allow for comprehensive exploration of the study objectives. Study objectives: I. Primary objective: To identify best practices in prevention interventions (any of universal, selected, and indicated) aimed at the general population of children and youth in any setting (e.g., community, family, school, primary care, digital) relevant to the Canadian context and summarize their evidence for effectiveness. II. Secondary objective: To investigate the outcomes of prevention interventions (universal, selective, and indicated) on the mental health and problematic substance use of children and youth, and to describe the methods by which prevention interventions have been evaluated.
