U.S. Army soldiers face unique noise exposures in the current deployed setting. The effects of these deployment-related exposures have not previously been documented. In an attempt to initiate this process, medical evaluations performed at military audiology clinics from April 2003 through March 2004 were reviewed to compare noise-induced hearing loss injury (NIHLI) outcomes among soldiers whose diagnoses were classified as postdeployment-related versus non-postdeployment-related. Sentinel NIHLI outcomes of interest included acoustic trauma, permanent threshold shift, eardrum perforation, tinnitus, and military-specific H-3 and H-4 hearing loss profiles. The results show that significantly higher rates of NIHLI and associated outcomes were observed among soldiers whose diagnoses were postdeployment-related. Based on the findings from this evaluation, recommendations are provided for enhancing the force health protection posture for prevention of hearing loss in future deployments. In Wales, the delivery of Audiology Services is expanding from Secondary Care to Primary Care. When patients contact their GP for ear-related problems they will be seen by an Audiologist within the community, enabling them to have specialised Audiology care sooner alleviating pressures on General Practitioners. The service involves offering hearing tests, wax removal and onward referrals for services such as hearing aid fittings in secondary care, tinnitus therapy, MRI scans, and ENT consultations. This aligns with the Welsh Government's strategic frameworks to deliver health and social care services in the community. The goals within “ A Healthier Wales” requires Primary Care services to deliver a range of services including Audiology within the community. In Swansea Bay University Health Board this model has decreased waiting time for patients to receive appropriate care by 6 months and fewer being referred to Secondary Care. It has also reduced patient load of GPs and Ear, Nose and Throat Consultants. However, nothing is known about the experiences of patients or clinicians working within the service and if they believe if it successfully meets the aims and objectives. Although the vision and opinion of clinicians can improve patient outcomes and satisfaction, clinicians often feel disconnected from the decisions being made within organisations. Therefore this project aims to interview Associate Audiologists, Audiologists, Advanced Audiologists and Clinical Scientists working in the Primary Care service in Wales to gain an insight into their views on the Primary Care Audiology service.

The purpose of the research is to gather opinions from Audiologists about whether auditory processing disorder (APD) is a unique disorder, whether they believe patients can “outgrow” APD and/or develop APD in adulthood, and how they manage patients presenting with APD-like symptoms within their department.

The phonetic transcription ability of 78 college students whose transcription instruction was administered by means of pre-programed Language Master cards was compared with that of 81 students whose instruction was non-automated. Ability was measured by seven weekly tests. There was no significant relationship on any of 29 variables with type of instruction. Intercorrelational techniques showed no positive correlation for sex, but positive correlations of grade point average and transcription and theory tests, and in four of the six Seashore Measures of Musical Abilities subtests (timbre, memory, pitch, and time). On questionnaires, students with live instruction indicated that they were significantly more satisfied (p=.05) and the main reason given was the feedback obtained from verbal imitation and the instructor's immediate critical reaction. It was concluded that live instruction be supplemented by machine practice. Three references are cited; word lists, instructions for Language Master users, satisfaction scale, grade data, and questionnaire data are provided. (Author/SN)

My internship at Johnson Space Center, Houston TX comprised of working simultaneously in the Space Life Science Directorate (Clinical Services Branch, SD3) in Audiology and Hearing Conservation and in the Astromaterials Research and Exploration Sciences Directorate in the Orbital Debris Program Office (KX). The purpose of the project done to support the Audiology and Hearing Conservation Clinic (AuHCon) is to organize and analyze auditory test data that has been obtained from tests conducted onboard the International Space Station (ISS) and in Johnson Space Center's clinic. Astronauts undergo a special type of auditory test called an On-Orbit Hearing Assessment (OOHA), which monitors hearing function while crewmembers are exposed to noise and microgravity during long-duration spaceflight. Data needed to be formatted to assist the Audiologist in studying, analyzing and reporting OOHA results from all ISS missions, with comparison to conventional preflight and post-flight audiometric test results of crewmembers. Orbital debris is the #1 threat to manned spacecraft; therefore NASA is investing in different measurement techniques to acquire information on orbital debris. These measurements are taken with telescopes in different parts of the world to acquire brightness variations over time, from which size, rotation rates and material information can be determined for orbital debris. Currently many assumptions are taken to resolve size and material from observed brightness, therefore a laboratory (Optical Measurement Center) is used to simulate the space environment and acquire information of known targets suited to best model the orbital debris population. In the Orbital Debris Program Office (ODPO) telescopic data were acquired and analyzed to better assess the orbital debris population.

The pre-registration of a scientific study can improve the transparency of scientific research and protect against bias in the form of researcher degrees of freedom. For this reason, we aim to conduct an in-depth investigation into the field of audiology through a comparison with the field of ophthalmology, since vision and hearing are comparable areas of allied healthcare and are both research areas covering a single, primary, sensory organ. Additionally, we also perform a comparison with popular and well-researched area, namely neuroscience, which is strongly related to audiology because the neurological processing of sounds primarily occurs in the brain. We hereby investigate the proportion of pre-registered publications in the three fields using two complementary methods. 1. The first method is examining ten peer-reviewed journals chosen through the Web of Science web page., The journals selected will be the ten with the highest impact factors, identified through the Journal Citation Reports database in each discipline. Identifying pre-registered studies by searching for the keywords "registered protocol", "registration", and "registered" and “protocol" in all text fields for all years from 2012 to 2022, and then calculating the percentage by comparing them to the total number of publications for that year. In addition, the practice of pre-registering studies will be evaluated year by year for the three areas: whether it is increasing faster in audiology or not, compared to neurosciences and ophthalmology. 2. The second method is searching through commonly used registration databases and websites (i.e., Open Science Framework, Clinical Trials, PROSPERO, and ISRCTN) and comparing the number of pre-registrations in these to the number of articles published in PubMed using the same keywords search in all databases. Moreover, pre-registered studies in these three areas will also be examined to see how audiology compares to the other fields and whether the number of pre-registrations has risen over the years

Background: Tele-audiology has accelerated with the rapid advancement in information and communication technology. There is a significant knowledge gap concerning the use of implementation science and factors influencing tele-audiology as a routine or long-term, sustained effort. This mixed-methods study aimed to identify implementation factors that influence the provision of tele-audiology services. Method: We carried out a mixed-methods study comprising a scoping review and semi-structured interviews (SSI). Articles describing tele-audiology were included based on a set of inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results: Data was extracted from 32 studies that were mapped to 21 projects in tele-audiology. The broad areas of focus identified in tele-audiology included the provision of hearing screening, diagnostic evaluation, a combination of diagnostic audiological with otorhinolaryngological evaluation, hearing aid fitting and programming, cochlear implant fitting and mapping, aural re/habilitation services and comprehensive audiological services. Provision of diagnostic and therapeutic services were predominantly carried out using synchronous/ real-time telepractice methods. Asynchronous methods were used predominantly for audiometric screening, video-otoscopy and tympanometry. The most commonly used model was the ‘professional-facilitator-patient’ followed by the ‘professional-patient’ model. Barriers to long-term sustainability included insufficient initial financial investment, lack of reimbursement policies, limited internet (speed and bandwidth), and lack of organisational policies and uniform laws. Successful implementation was reported to be aided by having a stable source of funding, a devoted team of professionals and technicians with defined roles and duties, and with methodical planning. Conclusion: The scoping review, as well as the interviewees, represented tele-audiology implementation efforts in a wide range of countries that include low-middle income and high-income nations. Successful implementation was reported to be aided by having a stable source of funding, a devoted team of professionals and technicians with defined roles and duties, and with methodical planning. Sustained implementation occurred when the need and usefulness of tele-audiology were accepted by public sector policy-makers. However, a more accurate understanding of sustainability can be obtained by the use of implementation science and frameworks to guide tele-audiology services.

The purpose of this project is to identify gaps in the current state of clinical assessment practices for children with developmental disabilities. The hypothesis and a general analysis plan were originally registered in August 2019. This registration provides more information on our analysis plan.
