Shows capital of states, principal cities and towns, roads, railroads, etc. This 1859 edition was published by Charles Desilver, copyright dates have been updated to 1859 or 1860, and was most likely issued in late 1859 or early 1860, as opposed to the previous 1859 edition that was published by Cushing & Bailey of 362 Market Street in Baltimore, with almost all copyrights dated 1856 (see: #4557.000). The maps bear the copyright and imprint of Charles Desilver 714 Chesnut Street. Changes from the 1859 edition includes a new map of Pennsylvania, two double page maps - map of Kansas by W.H. Holmes, and map of Mexico, with no pagination, as well as a double page map of Northern Italy which replaces map of Sardinia (Pl. 63), also various updates to individual maps. Maps in full color. This image 4474.002 is a part of image group 4474.000 . 1872 was the first edition, although Lloyd's maps from this atlas, in different configurations, appear in the 1871 Warner and Beers Atlas of the State of Illinois, the 1872 Warner, Higgins and Beers Atlas of Whiteside Co. and the State of Illinois, the 1872 Walling and Gray Atlas of the State of Ohio, and the 1873 Martenet, Walling and Gray Atlas of the State of Maryland and the District of Columbia (see our copies). We am sure that the maps also appear in numerous other county and state atlas by these and perhaps other publishers. Lloyd provided his maps to publishers to use in their atlases of counties and states, to give them an extra U.S. atlas at the back of their books. The maps are mostly on the same scale, indicating that they derive from a large wall map (see P11038). The configuration of the maps in the Handy Atlas is quite different from the other issues - especially unusual is the California and Nevada Map which has Arizona added at the bottom, turned ninety degrees. Tanner issued this atlas first in 1836 with engraved maps, then it was taken over by Carey and Hart in 1843 and converted by them to lithographic maps in 1845. In 1846 Mitchell took over the publishing of this atlas and continued until 1849. This atlas is important in American printing history in that it was the first American atlas to be converted from engraved map plates to lithographic map plates. The maps are in full color, lithographic, covering the World, North America, and Mexico. Oregon and Upper California maps show the new boundary of Mexico and the United States resulting from the Mexican War, for the first time. Title page by K. Knight, includes a view of "The first landing of Columbus in the new world". Print showing Christopher Columbus and crew praying after landing in the New World for the first time on October 12 1492. With engraved decorative title page dated 1637 that is filled with allegorical female figures, geographers measuring the globe within an architectural surrounding, and additional title page from the first edition, dated 1635, with the imprint: Printed by T. Cotes for Michael Sparke and Samuel Cartwright. The atlas is in 1032 pages, includes frontispiece "Englished by W.S.," dedications signed by Wye Saltonstall. There is map of Virginia and Florida, which covers the area south of Chesapeake Bay, used first in the "Atlas Minor" of 1607. The map of Egypt: 'At Page 818. the single Map of Aegypt is to be pasted on the Page. Second printing in English, with a duplicate map of New Spain in place of the later issued map of Virginia by Ralph Hall: "there is no Map for Virginia in regard there is a more exact Map drawing in that Country, whose Platforme is not yet come over, but when it comes, every buyer of the Booke shall have it given him gratis" (see errata on verso of final leaf). "Wye Saltonstall intended in his first edition of the "Historia Mundi" a map of Virginia. In acquiring the Mercator-Hondius copperplates used first in the "Atlas Minor" of 1607, he only possessed one of Virginia and Florida, which covers the area south of Chesapeake Bay. Since that time the Jamestown colony had become important, and a map would be needed to illustrate it… [Hall's] map was included in future editions of the "Historia Mundi" in 1637 and 1639" (Burden 244).
