2DTIC ADA160828: A Case Study Of A Mid-Atlantic Coastal Front.
By Defense Technical Information Center
A unique case of mid-Atlantic coastal frontogenesis on December 21-22, 1983 is examined to determine the evolution of the three dimensional structure of this mesoscale phenomena. Analysis of synoptic and mesoscale surface maps suggest a coastal front which moves steadily inland. However, review of temperature and wind profiles at individual stations reveals that frontogenesis actually occurs over the land in North Carolina and southern Virginia. Lagrangian and Eulerian frontogenesis process is found to be largely a result of the ageostropic flow within the cold wedge which results in weak cold air advection over the land. This northerly flow combines with a strong southerly flow over the Atlantic to increase the temperature gradient near the coastline. Analysis of kinematic variables indicates regions of relatively strong convergence and cyclonic vorticity in the region of the coastal front. Geostrophic deformation maxima coincide with the ridge of the anticyclonic bulge east of the Appalachians. Three-dimensional Lagrangian frontogenesis computations identify the shear and confluence terms as frontogenetical within the frontal zone. The tilting term is frontolytical within the frontal zone. Precipitation analyses identify the cold air side of the coastal front as favorable for enhanced precipitation. Relationships between precipitation bands and convective instability are also discussed.

51941 OFFICIAL FILMS NEWSREEL VOL. 2 DOUGLAS XB-19 BATTLE OF ATLANTIC WWII EASTERN FRONT 84724b
By PeriscopeFilm
This film shows newsreel highlights of 1941 and is an Official Films presentation (:07). It provides footage of the Douglas XB-19’s first flight as well as footage from fronts of WW2 and the Atlantic Meeting between Churchill and Roosevelt. It opens with photography on Venice Beach California (:19) and sunbathers laying bikini clad along the sand as a photographer snaps various shots (:28). An optical illusion is shown as a woman sitting in the sand with a hand outstretched appears to be holding her boyfriend in the palm of her hands (:42). Two women playing in the sand have disguised themselves as disembodied heads (:47). The Douglas XB-19 was the largest bomber aircraft built for the USAF until 1946 and it’s first test flight is shown (1:12). It took off in Santa Monica, California (1:16) and is compared to a pursuit plane to show its massive size (1:21). The first minute of the test run cost a whopping $83,000 in insurance (1:30). It is seen heading for the runway (1:38) and Major Armstead brought the plane down into an army field near Riverside (1:49). Footage from the Battle of the Atlantic follows as British destroyers sunk German warships in the Atlantic (2:25). After setting the ship aflame, the German crew is seen moving towards the Royal Navy destroyer which had stopped them (2:30). Men in small life boats are seen in the waters (2:37) and a torpedo is sent to the burning German ship (2:32). Another German ship was inspected by British Officials (2:50). After they leave the ship, death bombs are seen headed for the British Destroyer (2:50). German prisoners are then filmed watching as their ship sinks (3:18) after it had been hit. On the eastern front of WW2, the first films of the Russo-German war are shown (3:20). On June 22nd, 1941 German’s launched a surprise attack against the Soviet Union (3:25). Russian civilians quickly took to defending their land (3:28) and crosses of tape are seen all over windows to resist destruction from aerial attack (3:34). Women were mobilized as well and a group of women are seen with the medic red crosses on their arms (3:38). The Kremlin in Moscow is shown (3:47) as British and Russians reached an agreement to work together (3:51). Foreign Commissar Molotov is seen signing the pact of allegiance with Great Britain (3:55) as Joseph Stalin looked on (4:00). Commissar Kliment is seen in front of the Leningrad sector in the north (4:15) and the Commander in Chief, Marshal Semyon (4:23) is seen heading the army before Moscow (4:23). Ukrainian defense rested with Marshal Budyonny (4:29). All Russian citizens received training for guerrilla warfare for months as a requirement (4:35). These semi military forces were effective beyond German lines (4:43). A detachment of Nazi paratroopers is seen dropping form overhead and heading for a distant village (4:46). An alarm is rung out (4:50) and civilians whom had been educated in anti-chuting techniques jump onto horses and head into action (4:57). Detachments from across the countryside went out to intercept the invading forces (5:05). German planes hit Russian airfields (5:10). Propaganda troops are seen rolling out wire (6:13) to set up speakers to send orders to the villagers (6:19). A span of captured enemy fliers are seen as they were transported to headquarters (6:28). The Atlantic Meeting between Winston Churchill and President Roosevelt took place in Placentia Bay from August 9th to the 12th (6:43). Britain’s battleship, the Prince of Wales is seen heading west through the northern Atlantic for this meeting (6:56). Winston Churchill and Lord Beaverbrook follow, (7:06) as well as Churchill meeting the ship’s mascot Whiskey (7:21). The Prince of Wales spots the first of the US warships which were awaiting their arrival (7:25). Churchill joins the US ship to meet Roosevelt (7:38) on the USS Augusta (8:02). The two heads of the world’s largest naval powers are seen greeting one another (8:15) and Churchill hands Roosevelt a letter from King George VI (8:17). Chaplains from both fleets presented traditional hymns (8:34). The meeting concludes (8:57), the President is seen biding Lord Beaverbrook goodbye (9:00) and Roosevelt and Churchill shake hands as they part (9:17). We encourage viewers to add comments and, especially, to provide additional information about our videos by adding a comment! See something interesting? 7DTIC ADA422980: Seasonal Characteristics Of Bottom Boundary Layer Detachment At The Shelfbreak Front In The Middle Atlantic Bight
By Defense Technical Information Center
The seasonality of various characteristics of the detached bottom boundary layer of the Middle Atlantic Bight shelfbreak front is examined using a collection of high resolution transects across the front. The analysis follows previous methodology in which accumulated temperature change along isopycnals within the front is used to infer the location of the detached layer. The seasonal mean isopycnal at which detachment occurs (approximately 26.0 kg cu.m) is fairly constant throughout the year. However, the vertical scale of the detached layer varies significantly with season, extending 60-80 m above the bottom in winter and spring, but only 20-40 m above the bottom in summer. The vertical scale is controlled by the strength and depth of the seasonal pycnocline. The observations suggest that the detached layer is capable of extending into the euphotic zone during winter and spring. 8DTIC ADA629177: Toward Realistic Modeling Of A Shelfbreak Front: Lagrangian Metrics And Process Studies For The Middle Atlantic Bight
By Defense Technical Information Center
A region where predictive capability is sought for tactical concerns is the flow field in the vicinity of the continental shelfbreak. Sound propagation from the continental slope to the continental shelf is a complex process that is highly dependent upon the oceanographic environment. A strong thermal shelfbreak front, and its associated current, are the key features that influence acoustic propagation in many shelf regions. Theory and field data suggest that acoustic propagation is strongly affected by frontal features that can evolve on rapid temporal scales (1-2 days) and small spatial scales (10-20 km). The overall aim of this proposed work is to improve our ability to realistically model and predict the evolution of the shelfbreak front so as to advance the predictive capability of this region.

9A Climatology Of The Middle Atlantic Bight Shelfbreak Front
By Linder, Christopher Anthony
Description of the shelfbreak front in the Middle Atlantic Bight is hampered by the extreme variability of the front. In order to gain more insight into the mean frontal structure and associated baroclinic jet, historical data is used to produce two dimensional climatological fields of temperature and salinity for the region south of Nantucket shoals. Associated cross-shelf fields of density, geostrophic velocity, relative vorticity, and shallow water potential vorticity have also been computed. Historical data from a quality- controlled database (HydroBase) in the region 69-72 deg W, 39.5-41 deg N is included. Cross-shelf sections are obtained by averaging the data in nine depth bins with an average cross-shelf spacing of 10 km but an increased resolution of 4 km near the shelfbreak. The vertical averaging interval was 10 m over the shelf and upper slope waters, increasing to 50 m in the deep slope waters. The data were averaged in bimonthly periods to study seasonal trends. For inter- regional comparison, similar analyses were performed for the south flank of Georges Bank and the shelf off New Jersey. The climatological temperature and salinity are consistent with previous descriptions of the frontal hydrography. Most importantly, features such as the cold pool, the upper slope pycnostad, and the frontal boundary are well resolved when compared with synoptic sections. The temperature contrast across the front varies seasonally between 2-6 deg C near the surface and at depths of 45-65 m. The salinity contrast is 1.5-2 PSS, with little seasonal variation. The resulting cross-frontal near surface density gradients are strongest during the winter and weakest during the summer, when the seasonal thermocline is established

12Bwalk. Showing Front Of Blenheim Hotel, Atlantic City, N.J., 1911
Historical data from a quality-controlled database (HydroBase) in the region 69-72 deg W, 39.5-41 deg N is included. For inter-regional comparison, similar analyses were performed for the south flank of Georges Bank and the shelf off New Jersey. The resulting cross-frontal near surface density gradients are strongest during the winter and weakest during the summer, when the seasonal thermocline is established.

13DTIC ADA628063: Toward Realistic Modeling Of A Shelfbreak Front: Lagrangian Metrics And Process Studies For The Middle Atlantic Bight

Young people are trained on various tools and machines in an aircraft manufacturing workshop. Apprentices work on drilling and planing machines; turning; milling; grinding; welding; working in a forge. Finished aircrafts (Heinkel He 111) leave the assembly hall. Some of the veteran armament workers and their contribution to the armaments industry. 04:45-07:45 - Introduction of the Panzerkampfwagen VI "Tiger", German Reich, 1943. Reich Minister of Armaments and Munitions Albert Speer and designer Ferdinand Porsche on the test field, during the tests of the Tiger tank. Testing the Tiger in the difficult terrain: driving through difficult forest terrain, climbing a steep slope, driving through the house. Tiger tank firing at captured tanks in the field, effects of Tiger 8.8cm shells shown on Soviet KW-1 tank. 07:46-11:14 - Logistics on Eastern Front, Soviet Union, 1943. A transport train carrying StuG III assault guns, vehicles, equipment, and soldiers sets off. Train is protected by light anti-aircraft gun (2 cm Flak). A half-track vehicle is pulling a Panzer III without tracks into a workshop for maintenance. An armored reconnaissance vehicle (Sd.Kfz. 231) is being sprayed with new paint. Half-tracks, tracked tractors, and trucks move through a muddy roads with difficulties. 11:15-21:49 - Construction of the Atlantic Wall, Atlantic Coast, 1943. Albert Speer and his colleagues inspect a large construction site on the Atlantic Wall. Members of the "Organisation Todt" at work: men are working with shovels and pickaxes, excavators and steamrollers during work. Sand and gravel are being excavated from the beach. A construction site is being covered with a large camouflage net to shield it from aerial observation and from view from the sea. Workers with axes are working on the lumber. Concrete is poured into the iron mesh and tamped down. A large crane lifts parts of the heavy gun. The barrel is pulled into position by five half-track vehicles. The gun (38 cm SK C/34 quick-loading gun) is placed in the armored rotating turret. A reinforced concrete structure is built around the turret, and then is camouflaged. Construction of the tunnel bunker: camouflage paint is applied and artillery ammunition is transported inside. A heavy railway gun (80 cm cannon) is assembled by huge cranes. A gunner climbs through the barrel to the muzzle for cleaning. A control center; a radio and telephone room. The Atlantic Wall stretched for over 5,000 kilometers along the coast of Western Europe.
