We consider a nearest neighbor random walk on the one-dimensional integer lattice with drift towards the origin determined by an asymptotically vanishing function of the number of visits to zero. We show the existence of distinct regimes according to the rate of decay of the drift. In particular, when the rate is sufficiently slow, the position of the random walk, properly normalized, converges to a symmetric exponential law. In this regime, in contrast to the classical case, the range of the walk scales differently from its position.

We describe and analyse a simple greedy algorithm \2G\ that finds a good 2-matching $M$ in the random graph $G=G_{n,cn}^{\d\geq 3}$ when $c\geq 15$. A 2-matching is a spanning subgraph of maximum degree two and $G$ is drawn uniformly from graphs with vertex set $[n]$, $cn$ edges and minimum degree at least three. By good we mean that $M$ has $O(\log n)$ components. We then use this 2-matching to build a Hamilton cycle in $O(n^{1.5+o(1)})$ time \whp.

However, they often require either to store a very large random matrix, or to use a different, structured matrix to reduce the computational and memory costs. Here, we overcome this difficulty by proposing an analog, optical device, that performs the random projections literally at the speed of light without having to store any matrix in memory. This is achieved using the physical properties of multiple coherent scattering of coherent light in random media. We use this device on a simple task of classification with a kernel machine, and we show that, on the MNIST database, the experimental results closely match the theoretical performance of the corresponding kernel. This framework can help make kernel methods practical for applications that have large training sets and/or require real-time prediction. We discuss possible extensions of the method in terms of a class of kernels, speed, memory consumption and different problems.

The article attempts to demonstrate the rich history of one truly remarkable problem situated at the confluence of probability theory and theory of numbers - finding the probability of co-primality of two randomly selected natural numbers. The goal of the article is to reveal the genesis of the problem and understand the role of mathematicians of the past in solving this problem and using it as a background for advancing mathematical ideas. The article describes different approaches to the solution of the problem, reviews its various generalizations, examines similar problems, and offers diverse historical perspectives.

We consider a lattice-inspired random matrix model for the QCD chiral phase transition at finite chemical potential. Useful features of the usual RMM for QCD at finite chemical potential are reobtained, some being brought closer to their lattice equivalent. The simple physical requirement of a vanishing quark number density in the broken phase is fulfilled in the limit of a large number of timeslices. It is argued that the suppression of the partition function at nonzero chemical potential in the broken phase, seen in the usual RMM, is possibly present in lattice simulations and is simply a result of the discretization in time.

We introduce three universality classes of chiral random matrix ensembles with a nonzero chemical potential and real, complex or quaternion real matrix elements. In the thermodynamic limit we find that the distribution of the eigenvalues in the complex plane does not depend on the Dyson index, and is given by the solution proposed by Stephanov. For a finite number of degrees of freedom, $N$, we find an accumulation of eigenvalues on the imaginary axis for real matrices, whereas for quaternion real matrices we find a depletion of eigenvalues in this domain. This effect is of order $1/\sqrt N$. In particular for the real case the resolvent shows a discontinuity of order $1/\sqrt N$. These results are in agreement with lattice QCD simulations with staggered fermions and recent instanton liquid simulations both for two colors and nonzero chemical potential.

Random sequential addition (RSA) time-dependent packing process, in which congruent hard hyperspheres are randomly and sequentially placed into a system without interparticle overlap, is a useful packing model to study disorder in high dimensions. Of particular interest is the infinite-time {\it saturation} limit in which the available space for another sphere tends to zero. However, the associated saturation density has been determined in all previous investigations by extrapolating the density results for near-saturation configurations to the saturation limit, which necessarily introduces numerical uncertainties. We have refined an algorithm devised by us [S. Torquato, O. Uche, and F.~H. Stillinger, Phys. Rev. E {\bf 74}, 061308 (2006)] to generate RSA packings of identical hyperspheres. The improved algorithm produce such packings that are guaranteed to contain no available space using finite computational time with heretofore unattained precision and across the widest range of dimensions ($2 \le d \le 8$). We have also calculated the packing and covering densities, pair correlation function $g_2(r)$ and structure factor $S(k)$ of the saturated RSA configurations. As the space dimension increases, we find that pair correlations markedly diminish, consistent with a recently proposed "decorrelation" principle, and the degree of "hyperuniformity" (suppression of infinite-wavelength density fluctuations) increases. We have also calculated the void exclusion probability in order to compute the so-called quantizer error of the RSA packings, which is related to the second moment of inertia of the average Voronoi cell. Our algorithm is easily generalizable to generate saturated RSA packings of nonspherical particles.

We study the limiting distribution of particles at the frontier of a branching random walk. The positions of these particles can be viewed as the lowest energies of a directed polymer in a random medium in the mean-field case. We show that the average distances between these leading particles can be computed as the delay of a traveling wave evolving according to the Fisher-KPP front equation. These average distances exhibit universal behaviors, different from those of the probability cascades studied recently in the context of mean field spin-glasses.

It is shown how the universal correlation function of Brezin and Zee, and Beenakker, for random matrix ensembles of Wigner-Dyson type with density support on a finite interval can be derived using a linear response argument and macroscopic electrostatics. The analogous formula for ensembles of unitary random matrices is derived using the same method, and the corresponding global fluctuation formula for the variance of a linear statistic is presented. The result for the universal correlation is checked using an exact result for the finite system two-point correlation in the Dyson circular ensemble at all even $\beta$.

We study the density of states and localization properties of the lowest Landau levels of graphene at high magnetic fields. We focus on the effects caused by correlated long-range hopping disorder, which, in exfoliated graphene, is induced by static ripples. We find that the broadening of the lowest Landau level shrinks exponentially with increasing disorder correlation length. At the same time, the broadening grows linearly with magnetic field and with disorder amplitudes. The lowest Landau level peak shows a robust splitting, whose origin we identify as the breaking of the sublattice (valley) degeneracy.

The residual-based empirical distribution function that only uses complete cases, i.e. residuals that can actually be constructed from the data, is shown to be efficient in the sense of H\'ajek and Le Cam. In the proofs we derive, more generally, the efficient influence function for estimating an arbitrary linear functional of the error distribution; this covers the distribution function as a special case. We also show that the complete case residual-based empirical distribution function admits a functional central limit theorem. The article concludes with a small simulation study investigating the performance of the complete case residual-based empirical distribution function.

Objective: Demographic indicators such as mortality rates play a very important role in health, financial and pension policies. Therefore, the accuracy of mathematical models in estimating mortality rates is an important challenge. One of the tasks of actuaries is to construct a suitable mortality model for the available data so that these mortality models can calculate mortality for different ages and longevity, as well as the different information available to individuals on retirement plans. Missing data is a problem that may be faced by actuaries when they are analyzing the real data. Missing data can occur for a variety of reasons, such as unanswered or censored. The presence of missing data can pose a threat to the accuracy of the data analysis results. The purpose of this study is to model the mortality in a retirement plan. In this regard, it is assumed that data are available at the individual level, including date of birth, date of joining the retirement plan, date of completion of the observation, and reason for discontinuation (usually death or right censoring). Information on covariate variables such as gender, benefits or size of pension, demographic geography or health status will also be available. More precisely, this study aims to model the mortality in a retirement plan based on missing data and access to information from various covariate variables, to carefully analyze the structure of different models, to estimate and finally to investigate the financial implications for different mortality experiences containing missing data. Methodology: In this article, we deal with a pension plan in which each member's future life expectancy is modeled using parametric survival models incorporating covariates which may be missing for some individuals. Likelihood-based techniques estimate parameters, and in this regard, an algorithm is proposed that can perform the estimation task in the best possible way. One of the necessary features to check the adequacy of the statistical model, especially when the data contains missing values, is identifiable. If not identifiable, it can be claimed that the statistical model is not a full rank and is not a suitable model for the data. It is worth noting that the Jacobin matrix needs to be calculated to verify identifiability. As mentioned, in the analysis of mortality models with the presence of missing values, the maximum likelihood method can be used. In such cases, an estimation error may often occur when fitting the model, which can be reduced by modeling from a larger population. For this reason, hybrid retirement plans that remain homogeneous are often used. This proposed method can also be useful for calculating financial quantities based on pension factors. In fact, in this proposed method, different data sets with equal or similar death experiences are combined, sample size increases and risk of parameter decreases, which also leads to a reduction in capital requirement. Socio-economic variables such as the level of benefits and geographical characteristics of the population are also considered more if interest rates are low.   Finding: First, complete data are analyzed and modeled for observations of members of a retirement plan, which includes survival time and ancillary variables for each individual. Estimation of parameters is obtained using the maximum likelihood method. however, when the data is missing, it is not easy to estimate the parameters with the maximum likelihood method. In this case, the model parameters are estimated by the maximum likelihood method which are calculated using the proposed algorithm; then, statistical indicators such as identifiability of parameters are calculated to evaluate the performance of the proposed structure and algorithm. Furthermore, the financial effects, in particular the annuity factors, and the mis-estimation risk capital requirements for the mortality experience which includes the maximum covariates variables are calculated and compared with the individual segments when the data are missing. In addition, it can be seen that when the two statistical variables are not observed together, the model is not identifiable according to the data.   Conclusion: It was found that if the data are missing, the statistical model is not always identifiable using the maximum likelihood, and data combination from two or more experiments can avoid identifiable barriers. The methods proposed in this paper can be useful for actuaries when calculating financial committees based on annuity factors. These methods may combine different datasets with equal or similar mortality experiences, increase sample size, and reduce parameter risk, thus, reducing capital requirements. Socio-economic variables such as the level of benefits and geographical characteristics of the population are given more attention if the interest rate is low.

We comment on old and new results related to the destruction of a random recursive tree (RRT), in which its edges are cut one after the other in a uniform random order. In particular, we study the number of steps needed to isolate or disconnect certain distinguished vertices when the size of the tree tends to infinity. New probabilistic explanations are given in terms of the so-called cut-tree and the tree of component sizes, which both encode different aspects of the destruction process. Finally, we establish the connection to Bernoulli bond percolation on large RRT's and present recent results on the cluster sizes in the supercritical regime.
