11Toward 1% Photometry: End-to-end Calibration Of Astronomical Telescopes And Detectors

By

We review the systematic uncertainties that have plagued attempts to obtain high precision and high accuracy from ground-based photometric measurements using CCDs. We identify two main challenges in breaking through the 1% precision barrier: 1) fully characterizing atmospheric transmission, along the instrument's line of sight, and 2) properly identifying, measuring and removing instrumental artifacts. We discuss approximations and limitations inherent in the present methodology, and we estimate their contributions to systematic photometric uncertainties. We propose an alternative conceptual scheme for the relative calibration of astronomical apparatus: the availability of calibrated detectors whose relative spectral sensitivity is known to better than one part in $10^3$ opens up the possibility of in situ relative throughput measurements, normalized to a precision calibrated detector, using a stable but uncalibrated narrowband light source. An implementation scheme is outlined, which exploits the availability of tunable lasers to map out the relative wavelength response of an imaging system, using a flatfield screen and a calibrated reference photodiode. The merits and limitations of this scheme are discussed. In tandem with careful measurements of atmospheric transmission, this approach could potentially lead to reliable ground-based photometry with fractional uncertainties below the percent level.

12NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19760013967: Narrow Band Photometry Of Comet Kohoutek. [made At The Cassegrain Focus Of A 36-inch Astronomical Telescope

By

Photometric observations of the coma of comet Kohoutek were made at the Cassegrain focus of a 36-inch telescope. The observations consisted of one wide (visual, 5454 A) and six narrow (CN, 3879 A; C3, 4057 A; C2, 4732 A, 5165 A, 5634 A; continuum, 5200 A) band interference filters. In addition each filter was used with six diaphragms. Good quality data were obtained on 13 days between November 1973 and February 1974. A small flare was observed on 1 December for all filters, a CN flare on 13 January, and a visual flare on 28 January. The data were reduced to absolute narrow band magnitudes of the comet for the 13 days. The radial dependence of the surface brightness was derived from the set of diaphragms and future work will be directed toward using these results for modeling density distributions for the coma.

14NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19910003145: Some Insights On Solar Variability From Precision Stellar Astronomical Photometry

By

At Lowell Observatory, precision photoelectric photometry was directed toward the study of solar variability and the variability of sun-like stars beginning in 1949 and continuing until now. The ubiquity and range of low-level variability, including some that appears to be cyclic, among solar-type stars shows that recent solar variability may be unusual only in its present restraint.

15Astronomical Databases, Space Photometry And Time Series Analysis: Open Questions

By

How to analyse Terabytes of photometric data, and extract knowledge on variable stars? How to detect variable phenomena? How to combine different photometric bands? Which algorithm to search for periods? How to characterize and classify the detected variable objects? Many questions, but certainly no definitive answers yet. We present several aspects which are at the interface of photometric surveys and variable stars. Fully automated analyses of photometric surveys are still not at an optimized level. We will take the example of a future survey, the Gaia mission project of the European Space Agency, to show different steps of a possible automated pipeline scheme. Principal component analysis can be applied to the Gaia photometric bands. We give some illustrative examples of classification methods such as Support Vector Machine, Self-Organising Map, or Bayesian classifier.

16Atmospheric Scintillation In Astronomical Photometry

By

Scintillation noise due to the Earth's turbulent atmosphere can be a dominant noise source in high-precision astronomical photometry when observing bright targets from the ground. Here we describe the phenomenon of scintillation from its physical origins to its effect on photometry. We show that Young's (1967) scintillation-noise approximation used by many astronomers tends to underestimate the median scintillation noise at several major observatories around the world. We show that using median atmospheric optical turbulence profiles, which are now available for most sites, provides a better estimate of the expected scintillation noise and that real-time turbulence profiles can be used to precisely characterise the scintillation noise component of contemporaneous photometric measurements. This will enable a better understanding and calibration of photometric noise sources and the effectiveness of scintillation correction techniques. We also provide new equations for calculating scintillation noise, including for extremely large telescopes where the scintillation noise will actually be lower than previously thought. These equations highlight the fact that scintillation noise and shot noise have the same dependence on exposure time and so if an observation is scintillation limited, it will be scintillation limited for all exposure times. The ratio of scintillation noise to shot noise is also only weakly dependent on telescope diameter and so a bigger telescope may not yield a reduction in fractional scintillation noise.

19NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19730008099: Ultraviolet Photometry From The Orbiting Astronomical Observatory. 8: The Blue Ap Stars

By

The filter photometers in the Wisconsin Experiment Package on OAO-2 were used to obtain data for a carefully selected set of 24 blue Ap stars and 31 comparison standard B and A dwarfs and giants for a program of relative photometry. Observations were made in seven bandpasses over the effective wavelength range 1430A-4250A. The Ap stars observed include members of the Si, Hg-Mn and Sr-Cr-Eu peculiarity classes. Most of them are too blue in B-V for their published MK spectral classes. The blue Ap stars are markedly deficient in emitted ultraviolet flux and are underluminous as compared to normal stars with the same UBV colors. The Hg-Mn stars appear less flux deficient in the ultraviolet for their UBV colors than do Si or Sr-cr-Eu stars. Most of the Ap stars observed possess ultraviolet flux distributions, or ultraviolet color temperatures, consistent with their published MK spectral classes to well within the classification uncertainties.

21Astronomical Photometry

24CCD Photometry Of Standard Stars At Maidanak Astronomical Observatory In Uzbekstan: Transformations And Comparisons

By

Observation of standard stars is of crucial importance in stellar photometry. We have studied the standard transformation relations of the UBVRI CCD photometric system at the Maidanak Astronomical Observatory in Uzbekistan. All observations were made with the AZT-22 1.5m telescope, SITe 2k CCD or Fairchild 486 CCD, and standard Bessell UBVRI filters from 2003 August to 2007 September. We observed many standard stars around the celestial equator observed by SAAO astronomers. The atmospheric extinction coefficients, photometric zero points, and time variation of photometric zero points of each night were determined. Secondary extinction coefficients and photometric zero points were very stable, while primary extinction coefficients showed a distinct seasonal variation. We also determined the transformation coefficients for each filter. For B, V, R, and I filters, the transformation to the SAAO standard system could be achieved with a straight line or a combination of two straight lines. However, in the case of the U filter and Fairchild 486 CCD combination, a significant non-linear correction term - related to the size of Balmer jump or the strength of the Balmer lines - of up to 0.08 mags was required. We found that our data matched well the SAAO photometry in V, B-V, V-I, and R-I. But in U-B, the difference in zero point was about 3.6 mmag and the scatter was about 0.02 mag. We attribute the relatively large scatter in U-B to the larger error in U of the SAAO photometry. We confirm the mostly small differences between the SAAO standard UBVRI system and the Landolt standard system. We also attempted to interpret the seasonal variation of the atmospheric extinction coefficients in the context of scattering sources in the earth's atmosphere.
