Despite the influx of artificial intelligences (AIs) into human society, we know little about how humans extend moral consideration to these artificial entities. The purpose of this survey is to assess the extent to which people show moral concern for AIs and to study people’s attitudes about the social integration of AIs in a nationally representative sample of US Americans. We will frame the survey with a focus on sentience in artificial entities (“artificial sentience”) and we will ask about attitudes towards current entities as well as attitudes about sentient artificial entities in the future. We also seek to contextualize the moral consideration of artificial entities by examining how moral attitudes relate to demographic characteristics, relevant psychological tendencies, and the moral consideration of other nonhuman entities (i.e., nonhuman animals, the environment).

Instead: "Machines are beneficial to the extent that their actions can be expected to achieve our objectives\" But more ethical and moral problems with this, and it's focus purely on utility as the outcome. How does AI emerge? Will we be programming it? Or will it emerge and mimic us. How does Bitcoin fix this? The question will be one of whether or not we've baked morality into our DNA. This is Wave 2 of the Artificial Intelligence, Morality, and Sentience survey that assesses the extent to which people show moral concern for artificial intelligences (AIs) and attitudes about the social integration of AIs in a nationally representative sample of US Americans. Wave 1 (2021) was preregistered (https://osf.io/udbhm).

This is a supplemental survey experiment to the Artificial Intelligence, Morality, and Sentience multi-wave survey (wave 1 https://osf.io/udbhm, wave 2 https://osf.io/w9h6g, wave 2 supplement https://osf.io/7p2wt, wave 3 https://osf.io/axmyz) with a nationally representative sample of US Americans. This survey experiment varies the terminology used to describe AIs to assess whether or not there is variation in response to AIs with agency, reasoning, emotion, or sentience faculties and whether or not there is variation in response to AIs, robots, or robots/AIs. Additionally, this survey assesses reasoning about AI sentience and AI moral concern, beliefs in the authenticity of AI mental faculties, and AI literacy.
