The Center for the Study of Art, Architecture, History & Nature (C-SAAHN) sponsors the Noon-Hour Lecture/Discussion series on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month at the Buffalo & Erie County Downtown Central Library. The theme for the 2010 - 2011 Series on the 4th Tuesday is "Why are Buffalo Niagara's Art, Architecture, History and/or Nature Important?" The October 26, 2010 speaker was Douglas W. DeCroix, Editor, Western New York Heritage Press. With beautiful images from their archive collection as a backdrop, DeCroix pondered the "WHY?" question in observing the rich heritage and treasures this region contains. WNY Heritage Press is arguably a "one-of-a-kind" magazine and owes a great deal of it"s success to the former editor, John Conlin, who received, in a presentation prior to the lecture, the 5th C-SAAHN Recognition Award for his lifetime contributions in "helping the community better see itself." -- By Dennis Galucki

"How can the unsettling climates of our times be understood? How can art, architecture, and design that engages with the complexities of our current age be analysed and criticised? Etymologically, the Norwegian word uro carries a double meaning: it can denote both ‘disquiet and unease’ as well as ‘riot and disturbance’. The word stems from the Old Norse úró and is used to describe political turmoil, social disorder, and a psychological state of restless anxiety. Thus the title of this anthology, Ung Uro (literally ‘young unrest’), intimates the paradoxical tension between describing our new geological condition – the Anthropocene – and referring to the reactions this condition provokes. In Ung Uro. Unsettling Climates in Nordic Art, Architecture and Design, thirteen young writers, critics, and art historians examine how Nordic visual art, architecture, and design relate to this new state of unease. Their topics span from early 20th century landscape painting to contemporary bio-acoustics, from Snøhetta’s energy-positive architecture to the Sami chant yoik, and from IKEA showrooms to fungi and bees as co-creators of artistic work. The empirical material consists mainly of specific exhibitions, artistic projects, and related events that took place for the most part in Norway from 2018 to 2020, and therefore the book is also a record of critical issues at stake in Nordic contemporary art and culture in the late 2010s. All those with an interest in contemporary art, design, and visual studies, including students, will find this book valuable."

The theme for the 2010 - 2011 Series on the 4th Tuesday is "Why are Buffalo Niagara's Art, Architecture, History and/or Nature Important?" Dottie Gallagher-Cohen, President and CEO, Buffalo Niagara Convention & Visitors Bureau, presented a clear case for developing the fifth largest economic sector in our region - tourism. The branding efforts since 2006 are paying off, based on seeing Buffalo as central to the region with many other attractions nearby, including Niagara Falls, Fort Niagara, Fort George and Fort Erie, Niagara-On-The-Lake, the Roycroft and Chautauqua Institution. Every dollar invested in tourism has been shown to have a $25 return. Our future is rooted in the culture we are developing around our art, architecture, history, and nature. --- By Dennis Galucki

The history of the area now known as Iran, but often still referred to as Persia, spans millennia, boasting a rich and complex artistic and cultural legacy. Populated since prehistoric times, thus making it one of the most dynamic areas of Islamic civilization, this region was home to the world’s first powerful empire (lead by Cyrus the Great during the Achaemenid dynasty) and has influenced the aesthetic grammar of a large portion of central Asia, including Armenia, Georgia, and India. From the ancient Iranian civilizations in 500 BC, through the Islamic period, and on to modern-day Iran, Iran: The Art and Architecture of Persia explores the common characteristics and thematic threads running through Persian art. Iran presents its readers with archaeological landscapes, monuments, sculptures, carpets, and dazzling ornaments and art objects from this stunning artistic milieu. The text takes as it subject the most fascinating and unusual facets of the Persian artistic experience, with a particular focus on post-Hellenic culture, namely late antiquity and the Middle Ages. Iran investigates how the examined regions were hothouses of specific artistic developments and identifies how the Iranian passage along the Silk Route acted as a bridge between distant lands for trade as well as the dissemination of religious and material culture. The two authors, Gianroberto Scarcia and Giovanni Curatola, write in an engaging, refreshingly accessible manner, catering both to specialists and to novices wishing to immerse themselves in this captivating region and its art. Author Scarcia writes the first part of the book, covering the era from the Achaemenids to the Sassanids and examining the great architecture from Persepolis onward while also addressing the powerful metalwork produced by these cultures. The second part, by Curatola, explores the Islamic period, when architectural decoration moved into the forefront with brilliant chromatic effects etched onto massive built works. The same colors bloom throughout the other arts, including carpets and miniature paintings. Dynamic and absorbing, Iran and its over 200 color photos will take readers on a virtual tour of this region and the art it has produced over the centuries.

Youth Art Expo is an anchor Education program of the museum that invites K-12 students across the extended Roaring Fork Valley to engage their creativity and problem-solving skills through an artist-designed curriculum around a single theme. The 2025 edition is Architecture and Imagination, with a curriculum designed by artist Madelon Vriesendorp, multidisciplinary artist Charlie Koolhaas, and designer, educator, and nonprofit leader Maya Bird-Murphy. Students are invited to design spaces, buildings, or cities in response to creative prompts and with no assigned limits. The Museum provides participants with materials and other resources, as well as exhibition space to share their ideas with each other and the wider community. Know Aspen. Watch GrassRoots. GrassRoots TV programming is entirely funded by direct contributions from members of the Roaring Fork Valley community, and through grants from the Pitkin County Healthy Community Fund, The Town of Snowmass Village, the City of Aspen Community Non-Profit Grant Program, and The Aspen Thrift Shop. Founded by citizens of Aspen, Colorado in 1972, GrassRoots TV is the first and oldest community operated and programmed open-source media center and television station in the United States. Virtually all of the programming is created by local residents, occasionally with world renown guests. In partnership with the American Archive of Public Media and the Library of Congress, GrassRoots is currently cataloguing, restoring and digitally archiving 700 of the most at-risk original video programs out of its 45,000 title Community Video Archive.
