3Wireless Information And Power Transfer: Architecture Design And Rate-Energy Tradeoff

By

Simultaneous information and power transfer over the wireless channels potentially offers great convenience to mobile users. Yet practical receiver designs impose technical constraints on its hardware realization, as practical circuits for harvesting energy from radio signals are not yet able to decode the carried information directly. To make theoretical progress, we propose a general receiver operation, namely, dynamic power splitting (DPS), which splits the received signal with adjustable power ratio for energy harvesting and information decoding, separately. Three special cases of DPS, namely, time switching (TS), static power splitting (SPS) and on-off power splitting (OPS) are investigated. The TS and SPS schemes can be treated as special cases of OPS. Moreover, we propose two types of practical receiver architectures, namely, separated versus integrated information and energy receivers. The integrated receiver integrates the front-end components of the separated receiver, thus achieving a smaller form factor. The rate-energy tradeoff for the two architectures are characterized by a so-called rate-energy (R-E) region. The optimal transmission strategy is derived to achieve different rate-energy tradeoffs. With receiver circuit power consumption taken into account, it is shown that the OPS scheme is optimal for both receivers. For the ideal case when the receiver circuit does not consume power, the SPS scheme is optimal for both receivers. In addition, we study the performance for the two types of receivers under a realistic system setup that employs practical modulation. Our results provide useful insights to the optimal practical receiver design for simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT).

11DTIC ADA481011: Power And Energy Architecture For Army Advanced Energy Initiative

By

The Army Research, Development, and Engineering Command's (RDECOM) Power & Energy Integrated Product Team (P&E IPT) has initiated the Army Advanced Energy Initiative (AAEI) concept. Although there are multiple reasons driving the need for this program, foremost is an urgent requirement to address the need for better integration among programs developing advanced power and energy technologies for the Army. The current P&E architecture is an amalgam of independent programs, which traditionally have been developed in stovepipe organizations, and often as an afterthought to the development of other advanced technologies. The requirement for power and energy in a rapidly modernized, highly digital, and network-centric Army is growing exponentially. Simultaneously the ability to provide these growing depends imposes significant logistic penalties -- fuel consumption, size and weight, reliability, and environmental issues.

12RESPARC: A Reconfigurable And Energy-Efficient Architecture With Memristive Crossbars For Deep Spiking Neural Networks

By

Neuromorphic computing using post-CMOS technologies is gaining immense popularity due to its promising abilities to address the memory and power bottlenecks in von-Neumann computing systems. In this paper, we propose RESPARC - a reconfigurable and energy efficient architecture built-on Memristive Crossbar Arrays (MCA) for deep Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs). Prior works were primarily focused on device and circuit implementations of SNNs on crossbars. RESPARC advances this by proposing a complete system for SNN acceleration and its subsequent analysis. RESPARC utilizes the energy-efficiency of MCAs for inner-product computation and realizes a hierarchical reconfigurable design to incorporate the data-flow patterns in an SNN in a scalable fashion. We evaluate the proposed architecture on different SNNs ranging in complexity from 2k-230k neurons and 1.2M-5.5M synapses. Simulation results on these networks show that compared to the baseline digital CMOS architecture, RESPARC achieves 500X (15X) efficiency in energy benefits at 300X (60X) higher throughput for multi-layer perceptrons (deep convolutional networks). Furthermore, RESPARC is a technology-aware architecture that maps a given SNN topology to the most optimized MCA size for the given crossbar technology.

16Fast And Accurate Sparse Coding Of Visual Stimuli With A Simple, Ultra-Low-Energy Spiking Architecture

By

Memristive crossbars have become a popular means for realizing unsupervised and supervised learning techniques. Often, to preserve mathematical rigor, the crossbar itself is separated from the neuron capacitors. In this work, we sought to simplify the design, removing extraneous components to consume significantly lower power at a minimal cost of accuracy. This work provides derivations for the design of such a network, named the Simple Spiking Locally Competitive Algorithm, or SSLCA, as well as CMOS designs and results on the CIFAR and MNIST datasets. Compared to a non-spiking model which scored 33% on CIFAR-10 with a single-layer classifier, this hardware scored 32% accuracy. When used with a state-of-the-art deep learning classifier, the non-spiking model achieved 82% and our simplified, spiking model achieved 80%, while compressing the input data by 79%. Compared to a previously proposed spiking model, our proposed hardware consumed 99% less energy to do the same work at 21 times the throughput. Accuracy held out with online learning to a write variance of 3% and a read variance of 40%. The proposed architecture's excellent accuracy and significantly lower energy usage demonstrate the utility of our innovations. This work provides a means for extremely low-energy sparse coding in mobile devices, such as cellular phones, or for very sparse coding as is needed by self-driving cars or robotics that must integrate data from multiple, high-resolution sensors.

17URbAn: A Multipath Routing Based Architecture With Energy And Mobility Management For Quality Of Service Support In Mobile Ad Hoc Networks

By

Designing a wireless node that supports quality of service (QoS) in a mobile ad hoc network is a challenging task. In this paper, we propose an architecture of a wireless node that may be used to form a mobile ad hoc network that supports QoS. We discuss the core functionalities required for such a node and how those functionalities can be incorporated. A feature of our architecture is that the node has the ability to utilize multiple paths, if available, for the provision of QoS. However, in the absence of multiple paths it can utilize the resources provided by a single path between the source and the destination. We follow a modular approach where each module is expanded iteratively. We compare the features of our architecture with the existing architectures proposed in the literature. Our architecture has provisions of energy and mobility management and it can be customized to design a system-on-chip (SoC).

19ERIC ED196777: Energy And Architecture: The Solar And Conservation Potential. Worldwatch Paper 40.

By

This monograph explores how architecture is influenced by and is responding to the global energy dilemma. Emphasis is placed on conservation techniques (using heavy insulation) and on passive solar construction (supplying most of a building's heating, cooling, and lighting requirements by sunlight). The basic problem is that architecture, like transportation, manufacturing, and agriculture, is heavily dependent on fossil fuels. It is estimated that approximately one-quarter of the world's energy supplies (two-thirds of which is derived directly or indirectly from oil and natural gas) is used for heating, cooling, and lighting buildings. Until recently, buildings in many countries were constructed with little or no concern for their energy efficiency or lifetime fuel costs. Building designers and researchers have recently become much more energy-conscious, due in large part to realization that paying for electricity is now the biggest expense in operating most large buildings. Also, the level of general awareness regarding energy use in buildings has risen rapidly as consumers, builders, real estate agents, and others have been exposed to education about climate conscious buildings. The conclusion is that the potential of energy-conscious improvements such as passive solar techniques and conservation for reducing dependence on expensive fossil fuel energy will be realized if designers, consumers, and regulatory agencies make an immediate and total commitment to make the transition to climate conscious buildings. Ways in which this transition can be accelerated include labeling of the fuel requirements of buildings by trade associations and local governments, provision of tax breaks for solar and other energy efficient homes, and establishment of energy standards for all new buildings. 20The Design Connection : Energy And Technology In Architecture

The goal to be pursued is to achieve the best interaction between climate, building and user behaviour. Bioclimatic buildings exploit climate in order to offer their occupants the most appropriate comfortable conditions. Especially, variations in hours of sunshine, in temperature, and rainfall of a particular climate signify establishing various strategies according to seasonal differences of particular region. In winter time assembling most of solar gain, and protecting the users from the cold (heating) are important. In summer; occupants/users need more protection from the sun (cooling). Thus, bioclimatic buildings reside in tune with these natural rhythms through consulting the most of natural lighting. This paper is aimed to enable architects to rediscover the principles of bioclimatic architecture and the modern technical and architectural means to achieve them. The study persuades adjusting the Double Skin Façades (DSF) design as the disciplined approach of ensuring the major strategies of Bioclimatic Architecture. Apparently, the study seeks three delineated bioclimatic approach daylight, thermal comfort and natural ventilation in DSF systems.  The study views the DFS systems as the potential inclination for bioclimatic architecture ecological principles. On this basis, a connection between Bioclimatic Architecture and DFS systems are asserted and moderated within a generalized task.
