You know when you go to an impressive Modernist building, part of what's impressive is more than just the structure.  The landscape all around the building, from the sidewalks to the signage to the plants to how the sun hits everything just right - this is the stuff that the general public often takes for granted.  But it doesn't happen by accident, and it's not typically part done by the building's main architect.  What often takes a building from good to great is an important profession called landscape architecture.  Poolside in Palm Springs, George talks with Roderick Wyllie and James Lord, partners with the award-winning San Francisco-based landscape design firm SurfaceDesign.  Later on, some high-quality time with Durham jazz recording artist Al Strong.

For long-duration space missions outside of Earth orbit, reliability considerations will drive higher levels of redundancy and/or on-board spares for life support equipment. Component scaling will be a critical element in minimizing overall launch mass while maintaining an acceptable level of system reliability. Building on an earlier reliability study (AIAA 2012-3491), this paper considers the impact of alternative scaling approaches, including the design of technology assemblies and their individual components to maximum, nominal, survival, or other fractional requirements. The optimal level of life support system closure is evaluated for deep-space missions of varying duration using equivalent system mass (ESM) as the comparative basis. Reliability impacts are included in ESM by estimating the number of component spares required to meet a target system reliability. Common cause failures are included in the analysis. ISS and ISS-derived life support technologies are considered along with selected alternatives. This study focusses on minimizing launch mass, which may be enabling for deep-space missions.

The development of Nascom systems for ground communications began in 1958 with Project Vanguard. The low-speed systems (rates less than 9.6 Kbs) were developed following existing standards; but, there were no comparable standards for high-speed systems. As a result, these systems were developed using custom protocols and custom hardware. Technology has made enormous strides since the ground support systems were implemented. Standards for computer equipment, software, and high-speed communications exist and the performance of current workstations exceeds that of the mainframes used in the development of the ground systems. Nascom is in the process of upgrading its ground support systems and providing additional services. The Message Switching System (MSS), Communications Address Processor (CAP), and Multiplexer/Demultiplexer (MDM) Automated Control System (MACS) are all examples of Nascom systems developed using standards such as, X-windows, Motif, and Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP). Also, the Earth Observing System (EOS) Communications (Ecom) project is stressing standards as an integral part of its network. The move towards standards has produced a reduction in development, maintenance, and interoperability costs, while providing operational quality improvement. The Facility and Resource Manager (FARM) project has been established to integrate the Nascom networks and systems into a common network management architecture. The maximization of standards and implementation of computer automation in the architecture will lead to continued cost reductions and increased operational efficiency. The first step has been to derive overall Nascom requirements and identify the functionality common to all the current management systems. The identification of these common functions will enable the reuse of processes in the management architecture and promote increased use of automation throughout the Nascom network. The MSS, CAP, MACS, and Ecom projects have indicated the potential value of commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) and standards through reduced cost and high quality. The FARM will allow the application of the lessons learned from these projects to all future Nascom systems.

This study examines whether the architecture of meritocratic evaluation shapes the inequality third parties create when rewarding unequally performing actors for their performance, as signaled by evaluation. It is part of a larger research agenda exploring how the architecture of status hierarchies shapes inequality between the incumbents of high versus low positions in these hierarchies (for an overview, see Accominotti et al. 2022). By the “architecture of meritocratic evaluation,” we mean the features of the merit or performance hierarchies produced by meritocratic evaluation: these hierarchies can be more vertical vs. more horizontal (e.g., Espy and Lynn, 2023; Sauder 2006), more rigid vs. more fluid (e.g., Accominotti, forthcoming; Ridgeway 2019), or clearer vs. fuzzier (e.g., Accominotti 2021a, 2021b; Accominotti and Tadmon 2020). In particular, a more vertical hierarchy is one that involves a greater depth of differentiation between merit-based status positions, as in a hierarchy involving distinct tiers (or a greater number of distinct tiers), for example. Similarly, a more rigid merit hierarchy is one in which the status positions of various actors do not change vastly over time. The study comprises two distinct experiments. The first tests whether the greater rigidity of merit hierarchies makes third parties reward high- and low-merit actors more unequally. The second tests whether the greater verticality of merit hierarchies makes third parties reward high- and low-merit actors more unequally. Whether the greater clarity of merit hierarchies makes third parties reward high- and low-merit actors more unequally was tested in an earlier experiment that is not part of the present study.
