This book contains a large number of problems that pertain to various applied sciences, mainly technology. Each chapter starts with a brief summary of the theoretical concepts necessary for solving the problems. Most problems contain not only answers, but also worked out solutions, which demonstrate the various approaches. The book is intended for engineers and also for students and instructors who wish to master the probabilistic methods of solving applied problems. Professor Elena Ser geevna Wentzel, D. Sc (Eng.), graduated from Leningrad State University and then lectured for a long time at the Zhukovsky Air Force Engineering Academy. where she also did research. She is well known in the scientific community as an authority on applied probability. Her text books on probability theory and operational research are very popular in the USSR and have been translated into English, German, French, and Spanish. She is also a well known fiction writer (using the pen name /Grekova) and her books have each been reprinted several times in the USSR and have been translated into English. Professor Lev Alek sandrovich Ovcharov, D. Sc. (Eng.), is a leading authority in applied probability and automated control. He left school to fight in the Second World War, after which he entered the Zhukovsky Air Force Engineering Academy. He remained at the Academy after graduation and for a long time lectured there and carried out research. He has had several books on probability theory published in the USSR and they have been translated into German and Spanish. For a long time he headed a large research group engaged in the development of automated control systems. This book is based on many years of experience of teaching probability theory and its applications at higher educational establishments. It contains many of the problems we ourselves encountered in our research and consultative work. The problems are related to a variety of fields including electrical engineering, radio engineering, data transmission, computers, information systems, reliability of technical devices, preventive maintenance and repair, accuracy of apparatus, consumer service, transport, and the health service.  The text is divided into eleven chapters; each of winch begins with a short theoretical introduction which is followed by relevant formulas. The problems differ both in the fields of application and in difficulty. At the beginning of each chapter the reader will find comparatively simple problems whose purpose is to help the reader grasp the fundamental concepts and acquire and consolidate the experience of applying probabilistic methods. Then follow more complicated applied problems, which can be solved only after the requisite theoretical knowledge has been acquired and the necessary techniques mastered.
