But the history and reality of the GDR was far more complex. Not only was the GDR a socialist state built on antifascist principles following the Second World War. It also practiced solidarity with other socialist states, countries and liberation movements fighting for independence from colonialism across the Global South. To discuss this and more Rania Khalek was joined by Max Rodermund and Matthew Read, researchers at the International Research Centre DDR, which together with the Tricontinental Institute for Social Research published a special issue on the legacy and historical experiences of socialist construction under the conditions of constant imperialist aggression in the GDR. Today on the show I'm talking with Rainer Shea. Rainer is a friend and comrade I've gotten to know over Facebook and Twitter. He's a writer, a podcaster, and a revolutionary socialist. We're talking about Anti-Imperialism, and the reason I feel this is a conversation worthy of having in his historical moment is that I think many Americans are feeling like we're witnessing the decline of the American Empire. Things are really bad right now in the United States, both domestically and on the world stage. As we lose favor and respect among our geopolitical allies and hemorrhage credibility, America's standing in the world is on a steady decline. The world order established at the end of World War 2, with the United States being the premier military power and strongest economy, has dissipated. Although the military budget is still roughly three times the size of the Chinese military budget, our country has found itself unable to contend with any other obstacles other than a foreign war. In fact, we are a country that has made its peace with being perpetually at war, and in so many ways, America's imperialism has come home to haunt us. The rise of the police state, the surveillance state, and the patriot act leave the American public in a panopticon - but the very people who feel they're trapped in this failing capitalist system know American Empire is wounded, overextended in its territories, occupied by wars abroad and crisis at home. With all of this in our national conversations, I felt like Rainer, who makes anti-imperialism the central focus of his work, would be the perfect person to speak to about this. Our conversation is vast, but as far as tracing it back to theory, there's some Marx, Lenin, Gramsci, Althusser, and Mao. Pop culture is powerful and persuasive, and - for a century now - racist, Orientalist and cartoonish portrayals of Arabs and Muslims have littered our screens, big and small. This is the second episode in our three-part Citations Needed series on anti-Muslim racism in Hollywood. On Part I, we discussed big budget action and adventure films like Delta Force, American Sniper and True Lies, where Muslims get blown away at every turn. But not every movie and TV show is quite so overt in its vilification of the designated enemy. Since the release of these movies, the state curated narrative in film has diversified, broadening to include savvier Oscar-bait productions in which anti-Muslim racism is dressed up in elaborate plot structures and supposedly nuance \"debates\". Films like Argo, Syriana, and Zero Dark Thirty are lauded for their ostensible complexity, subtlety, and nuance, such as their willingness to suggest that government agencies like the CIA are bloated and bureaucratic. Instead of scenes with a tough action hero bodyslamming or mowing down teeming hordes of Muslim terrorists, these films are part of a smarter genre of jingoistic action film - the prestige thriller - featuring flawed protagonists, some meta comedy, and women CIA agents excelling in a historically male-dominated field of coups and torture. But ultimately, they project the same tired nationalism and ideology reinforcement just in a sleeker, more modern form. On this episode, we'll examine how anti-Muslim and anti-Arab propaganda is disseminated through the contemporary prestige thriller genre. We're joined by historian, artist and author Maytha Alhassen.

Arya Zahedi looks at the problems associated with anti-imperialist ideology during the Iranian revolution to cast light on struggles against the Islamic regime today.

In part 2 of our ongoing series about Aleksandr Dugin, Jules Taylor sits down to speak with Wahid Azal, author of the 2016 Counterpunch article entitled "Dugin's Occult Fascism and the Hijacking of Left Anti-Imperialism and Muslim Anti-Salafism". Wahid wrote this article when he realized that Duginists were actively recruiting leftists and anti-imperialists, as well as anti-Salafist Shiʿi and Sunni Muslims. This conversation was eye-opening on numerous levels, but I want to be cautious here and remind folks that being an anti-fascist isn't not dangerous. Fascists, in general, are dangerous people, with a ravenous ideology who are not to be trifled with. Wahid currently lives in Australia, and he relocated there from Berlin for his safety and the safety of his daughter after his wife mysteriously passed away. This conversation is about more than Dugin. It's about being anti-fascist and calling it out when you see it and how there is a very real cost to doing that. It's also about the way shades of far-right ideology can muddy the water and how we lose comrades. French influence is rapidly eroding over its former colonies in Africa. Since the 19th century, French colonization had culminated in a monopolized sphere of influence in West and North Africa. But things are now falling apart. A wind of change is sweeping across this resource rich African region. West Africans are gradually rejecting French influence and they are blaming this former colonial master for the rampant poverty and insecurity in the region. The nations in the region are now charting a new path and the future looks bright. The foreign ministers of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger recently kick-started a process of creating a confederation as part of a long-term goal of uniting the West African neighbors within a federation. This new political dispensation will be devoid of the neo-colonial French influence. Is West Africa entering a new dawn of progress and the end of French imperialism.

With recent primary election wins by candidates like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Tlaib, James Thompson, Julia Salazar and others, the terms \"socialist\" and \"democratic socialist\" are everywhere. Media outlets across the political spectrum - from The Washington Post andBusiness Insider to NPR and MSNBC to Jacobin - have rushed to publish explainer articles, demystifying the tenets of socialism and its variations for a mass American audience. But one thing missing from the bulk of these explainers - many of them written by high-profile Democratic Socialists themselves - is a robust account of foreign policy and the role America's massive imperial footprint would play in any future Democratic Socialist America. Instead, descriptions of socialism stick primarily to domestic issues. Similarly, the wave of recent democratic socialist explainers are quick to distance their brand of Democratic Party-friendly socialism with the scary brand in the Global South, namely that of Venezuela. Highlighting instead the virtues of white-majority countries like Sweden and Denmark, many socialist whisperers dismiss out of hand the Bolivarian Revolution with the dreaded \"authoritarian\" label. In this episode, we discuss the pros and cons of this approach and how to know the difference between good faith critiques of socialist systems in the global south and quick and cheap fetishizing of Scandinavian countries - none of which have had to grapple with the complexities of colonialism. Presented on Wednesday, July 29, 2020 online as part of the 2020 Park Church Summer Lecture Series In a moment when systemic racism has recently gained heightened visibility in the U.S., this talk explores how Mark Twain grappled with the difficulties of thinking systemically, of comprehending political structures that exceed individual experience.  In his anti-imperialist writings, Twain registers that the difficulty of grasping structures lies in the limitations of sight, the sense most often associated with knowledge in modern Europe and the United States.  From around 1880 until his death in 1910, Twain explored various technological structures for enfolding deep temporal and spatial structures into visual experience.  These uses of "spectacle," rooted in visual technologies that produce a false but powerful sense of immediacy, included a history board game, a history roadway game, and photography.  Twain's experiments with seemingly anti-historical visual technologies provide important parallels and lessons for our own uses of digital technologies in coming to terms with the relations between police brutality against Black Americans today and the long transnational history of anti-Blackness. Stephen Pasqualina is a Postdoctoral Scholar at the University of Nevada, Reno.  His current book project, Mechanical Failure: Modernism, Technology, and the Mediation of History , examines the roll of speed and visual media technologies in the US modernist historical imaginary.  Work related to this project has recently appeared in Modernism/modernity , J19: The Journal of Nineteenth-Century Americanists , Public Books , and MarkTwainStudies.org.

A City Against Empire is the history of the anti-imperialist movement in 1920s Mexico City. It combines intellectual, social, and urban history to shed light on the city’s role as an important global hub for anti-imperialism, exile activism, political art, and solidarity campaigns. After the Russian and the Mexican Revolution, Mexico City became a space and a symbol of global anti-imperialism. Radical politicians, artists, intellectuals, scientists, migrants, and revolutionary tourists took advantage of the urban environment to develop their visions of an anti-imperialism for the twentieth-century. These actors imagined national self-determination, international solidarity, and an emancipation from what they called “the West.” Global, local, and urban factors interacted to transform Mexico City into the most important hub for radicalism in the Americas. By weaving together the intellectual history of Mexico, the urban and social histories of Mexico City, and the global history of anti-imperialist movements in the 1920s, this books analyses the perfect storm of anti-imperialism in Mexico City.

But things are now falling apart. A wind of change is sweeping across this resource rich African region. West Africans are gradually rejecting French influence and they are blaming this former colonial master for the rampant poverty and insecurity in the region. The nations in the region are now charting a new path and the future looks bright. The foreign ministers of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger recently kick-started a process of creating a confederation as part of a long-term goal of uniting the West African neighbors within a federation. This new political dispensation will be devoid of the neo-colonial French influence. Is West Africa entering a new dawn of progress and the end of French imperialism.

1Modest Proposal

Jonathan Swift almost defines satire in this biting and brutal pamphlet in which he suggests that poor (Catholic) Irish families should fatten up their children and sell them to the rich (Protestant) land owners, thus solving the twin problems of starving children and poverty in one blow. 7Tale of a Tub

A Tale of a Tub was the first major work written by Jonathan Swift, composed between 1694 and 1697, that was eventually published in 1704. It is arguably his most difficult satire, and perhaps his most masterly. The Tale is a prose parody which is divided into sections of "digression" and a "tale" of three brothers, each representing one of the main branches of western Christianity. A Tale was long regarded as a satire on religion itself, and has famously been attacked for that, starting with William Wotton. The "tale" presents a consistent satire of religious excess, while the digressions are a series of parodies of contemporary writing in literature, politics, theology, Biblical exegesis, and medicine. The overarching parody is of enthusiasm, pride, and credulity. At the time it was written, politics and religion were still linked very closely in England, and the religious and political aspects of the satire can often hardly be separated. "The work made Swift notorious, and was widely misunderstood, especially by Queen Anne herself who mistook its purpose for profanity." "It effectively disbarred its author from proper preferment within the church," but is considered one of Swift's best allegories, even by himself. Sit back and listen to these light-hearted witty rhymes and see the world Jonathan Swift saw -- and maybe recognize your own. Think there is such a thing as corrupt rich guys who pretend they're God's gift to the world? So did Swift. Think some of these types strut around as if calls of nature don't apply to them? So did Swift. In one hilarious poem, he even describes gold diggers fighting over the loaded gentleman's gaseous offerings! His poem On Poetry, A Rhapsody, censored for treasonous mocking of the royal family, is in its rare uncensored form here. As free as he himself is with his sharp tongue against the blackened rich and corrupt , he knows others might have to kiss up to eat. So he includes many verses of advice on how to go about lying for a living, for example, "Your interest lies to learn the knack Of whitening what before was black." Despite the decay and hypocrisy he sees all around him he stays upbeat throughout -- even making fun out of his own tragic onset of deafness. He lived simply, loved his walks and craved the company of fellow poetical wits as they craved his company in return. With his pal Dr. Sheridan, for one, Jonathan Swift delighted in the 18th century equivalent of a rap off – going back and forth in dueling verse repartee. This second volume is a cornucopia of biting, iconoclastic humor and earnest criticism of injustice. Poems herein concerning Wood’s Halfpence are the companion to his famous Drapier’s Letters and trumpet his achievement in stirring up sufficient outcry to spare Ireland from damaging monetary debasement. He knew what real money was: “For in all the leases that ever we hold We must pay our rent in good silver and gold, And not in brass tokens of such a base mould.” And he didn’t think much of monetary debasement’s evil twin, fractional reserve banking, either: “We want our money on the nail The Banker’s ruin’d if he pays”. There’s a healthy smattering here of bums and urination references too – just so you know these are genuine Swift poems -- and all manner of other topics too. In Death and Daphne, written for a favorite grisette, we learn of Death’s sagging libido due to the skinniness of his human bride. And the last poem excoriating Sheridan for comparing base women to noble clouds is a heavenly coup de grâce for any challenger who would dare to top his politically incorrect and thunderous wit: <br />Some critic may object, perhaps, <br />That clouds are blamed for giving claps; <br />But what, alas! are claps ethereal, <br />Compared for mischief to venereal?<br /> - Summary by Arthur Krolman

A good part of the fun is seeing Swift work through the practical implications of each of his "what ifs?" — what if I was suddenly enormously magnified or diminished in size? for example - and delighting in the relish with which Swift indulges his great interest in matters scatalogical. As the tale progresses, Swift's skewering of English society becomes more and more pointed, reaching its ultimate ad absurdum as the author compares his contemporaries unfavourably with ... horses.
