5SUFB 331: Shark Week Schedule Review; Butt Out; Tourism Affecting Antarctica
By How To Protect The Ocean
The Shark Week Schedule for 2017 has been announced and there are some shows to which I am looking forward and others that perpetuate sharks as serial killers (which is false!!!). I review some of the synopses of the episodes announced during this episode. I also go over an infographic released by the Save San Francisco Bay Organization that deals with the problem of cigarette butt littering. One of the most preventable forms of litter out there. Finally, I talk about an article in the Guardian that discusses the affect of tourism on Antarctica and how some researchers are seeing changes in habitat due to the presence of invasive species of plants and insects.Enjoy the Podcast!!!Let me know what you think of the episode by joining our Facebook Group for the Podcast.Support Speak Up For Blue's Efforts to build a platform to raise awareness for Marine Science and Conservation and help you live for a better Ocean. 16B-15A, B-15J, B-15K, And C-16 Icebergs In The Ross Sea, Antarctica
By Jacques Descloitres, MODIS Rapid Response Team, NASA/GSFC
Summer’s thaw normally releases Antarctica’s Ross Sea and McMurdo Sound from the thick sea ice that accumulates over the winter, but in 2005, the process was blocked. The massive B-15A iceberg is disrupting the normal wind and current patterns that break up the ice, leaving McMurdo Sound frozen.McMurdo Sound passes through an annual cycle in which thick ice freezes on the water during Antarctica’s frigid winter, then breaks and drifts into the Ross Sea during the summer. By late spring in early November, a channel of ice has typically been swept from the Sound. During the spring and summer of 2004-2005, the process was disrupted by the giant B-15A iceberg. Topping 129 kilometers (80 miles) in length, the Long-Island-sized iceberg blocked the currents that usually clear out the Sound. The ice did not show signs of breaking up until early January 2005.In early January, temperatures heated up and a powerful storm moved over Antarctica. Strong winds churned the ocean, and, along with warmer temperatures, may have contributed to the break-up of the ice. When the clouds cleared on January 13, the formerly solid ice had been broken into chunks. The effect of the B-15A iceberg on McMurdo Sound is apparent in this series of true-color images, acquired by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (<a href="http://modis.gsfc.nasa.gov">MODIS</a>). In these images, the long B-15A iceberg drifts away from Ross Island on the open waters of the Ross Sea. The B-15J iceberg, which broke from B-15A in October 2003, rotates and also begins to drift into the sea. The frozen McMurdo Sound is a bluish white to the left of the two large icebergs. To their right is the smooth white Ross Ice Shelf, the large sheet of floating ice from which the B-15 iceberg calved in 2000. The rugged fjords of Scott Coast are partially free of snow in the bottom center of the images. The frozen expanse of water between the shore (left) and the open sea (right) had been a serious problem for penguins, which had to travel a greater distance to reach open waters and food. Though adults were probably able to make the trip to feed themselves, scientists feared the adults would have to consume most of the food they were bringing to their chicks because of the increased length return journey. When the ice broke in January, the trip became shorter and may have brought some relief to the penguins. It is not clear if the changing conditions came in time to save the penguin chicks from starvation. The ice was also a potential problem for supply ships trying to reach McMurdo Station and Scott Base. Instead of cutting through the usual 64 kilometers (40 miles) that separate the pier from open waters, icebreakers had to chart a course through 129 kilometers (80 miles) of ice. The icebreaker succeeded in reaching McMurdo in early January. This series of images also tracks the movement of the B-15A iceberg towards the Drygalski Ice Tongue. For much of December and early January, the massive iceberg had been on course to strike the ice tongue in what could have been a collision of giants. The Drygalski Ice Tongue is a floating extension of a land-based glacier, and can be seen on the left edge of the images as the long, smooth white barrier separating the open sea from the frozen McMurdo Sound.Such ice tongues have been known to break under smaller strains, and according to NASA scientist Robert Bindschadler, the Drygalski Ice Tongue has never experienced a blow of the magnitude that B-15A could deliver. The iceberg had been moving steadily towards the ice tongue, but its movement slowed in late December. Just as the gap between the two narrowed to less than 4 kilometers, the iceberg rotated slightly and may have become grounded. By January 13, the gap had widened as the iceberg appeared to reverse its course, perhaps in response to being grounded. It was late March before the iceberg began to move again, its tip just missing the Drygalski Ice Tongue as it started to drift into the Ross Sea. Sensor: Terra/MODIS. Data Start Date: 12/13/04.

24Iceberg B-15, Ross Ice Shelf, Antarctica
By Jacques Descloitres, MODIS Land Science Team
A massive iceberg (known as B-15) broke off the Ross Ice Shelf near Roosevelt Island in Antarctica in mid-March 2000. Among the largest ever observed, the B-15 iceberg is approximately 300 km long and 40 km wide an area about twice the size of the state of Delaware. The iceberg was formed from glacier ice moving off the Antarctic continent. The ice calved along pre-existing cracks in the Ross Ice Shelf.<br/>(Resolution: 300 meters; MODIS Data Type: MODIS-PFM) Sensor: Terra/MODIS. Data Start Date: 3/20/00.

25C-16, C-19 And B-15A Icebergs In The Ross Sea, Antarctica
By Jacques Descloitres, MODIS Land Rapid Response Team, NASA/GSFC
The emergence of Antarctica from months of total darkness reveals the location of new icebergs that calved off the Ross Ice Shelf during the long winter. Some of the icebergs shown in these true-color <a HREF="http://modis.gsfc.nasa.gov" target="outlink">Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer</a> (MODIS) images of Antarctica are on the move. Along the western portion of the image lie the Trans-Antarctic Mountains. In the center is the Ross Sea. Banked up against the Antarctic coastline is the vast Ross Ice Shelf (bottom right). Numerous large icebergs have calved off the shelf and are visible in this series of imagesB-15a (southeast of center in these images, pointing out to sea) calved off the eastern portion of the shelf in March 2000 and drifted westward before apparently becoming anchored at its southern end near Ross Island. (Tucked between B-15a and Ross Island is a smaller berg produced during the same calving event that gave rise to B-15. This berg is designated C-16). Scientists have watched B-15 rock like a pendulum, but so far it has not broken free of its moorings. When the B-15 "mother" iceberg broke free of the shelf, it was one of the largest icebergs ever observed by scientists. The original length was roughly one-third of the total length of the ice shelf’s front—about 300 kilometers by 37 kilometers, or 180 miles by 22 miles. When this series of images begins on September 22, 2002, the C-19 iceberg is perpendicular to the northern end of B-15, but over the next month, the berg moves out to sea. C-19 calved off the Ross Ice Shelf in May 2002. With calving of the C-19 berg, scientists now think the Ross Ice Shelf, which had been growing slowly over the past century, has returned to the size it was when the first European explorers reached Antarctica in the early 1900s.Scientists believe these large bergs are part of the natural cycle of the shelf, and unlike the collapse of the Larsen Ice Shelf on the other side of the continent, are probably not due to rising ocean temperatures. The shelf forms as snowfall on the continent slides slowly off the sides of Antarctica and pushes out to sea. While a large portion of the shelf is underwater, it is still afloat (not anchored to the bottom of the ocean), and eventually, the shelf collapses under it’s own massive weight, producing ice bergs. Sensor: Terra/MODIS. Data Start Date: 10/4/02. Data End Date: 10/4/02.

28B-15A, B-15J, And C-16 Icebergs In The Ross Sea, Antarctica
By Jacques Descloitres, MODIS Rapid Response Team, NASA/GSFC
A massive iceberg that had been blocking traditional shipping routes to McMurdo Station, the National Science Foundation’s research station in Antarctica, snapped in two seemingly overnight. The B-15A iceberg seemed to be intact in the Terra MODIS image recorded on October 7, 2003. But Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) images starting on October 9 show the iceberg in two pieces. The largest section, top, is about 75 miles long, and the shorter section, called B-15J, is 20-25 miles long. On December 15, 2003, B-15A fractured again. The new iceberg, B-15K, is visible on the left edge of B-15A beginning on December 16, 2003. It is about 37 miles long and 4 miles wide. The B-15A iceberg broke off the Ross Ice Shelf in 2000 and drifted to its present location. It was one of the largest icebergs scientists had ever observed breaking from the shelf. It and a second large iceberg, C-19, trapped sea ice in the passage that supply ships typically used to get to the research station on Ross Island. C-19 swung out to sea in 2002, freeing some of the trapped ice. Scientists at the University of Wisconsin-Madison who first noticed the recent break say that it is unclear how B-15A’s break-up will affect previously trapped ice.The Ross Ice Shelf is a vast field of snow and ice extending from the continent into the Ross Sea on the western Pacific coast of Antarctica. As glaciers slide off the continent and push the shelf out, the outer edges crumble into a myriad of icebergs such as B-15A.In this series of images, starting on October 7, 2003, the B-15A iceberg points out into the Ross Sea. After the break, it began to drift away from the B-15J iceberg, which is slowly rotating and moving next to the smooth white Ross Ice Shelf. The B-15K iceberg began to move away from the B-15A iceberg after breaking off on December 15. The C-16 iceberg, which broke off the Ross Ice Shelf in the same event as the B-15 iceberg, sits to the left of B-15J. Sensor: Terra/MODIS. Data Start Date: 10/17/03. Data End Date: 10/17/03.

31Science Nation: Antarctica Rocks!
Geologist John Goodge looks for clues about Antarctica's past in the two percent of the continent that is not covered in ice! The University of Minnesota, Duluth professor studies rocks that help provide evidence about how this desolate continent has formed and changed over time. He also hopes to get a better idea of what the Earth looked like long before the seven continents we have now. Goodge and his colleagues are supported by the U.S. Antarctic Program, which is managed by the National Science Foundation. In late 2010 and early 2011, he spent several weeks in the field with other scientists, visiting a dozen sites in Antarctica, along 1200 miles of mountains. They collected 2500 pounds of rocks, which are now being analyzed back in the states.

Moreover, it belie the uncertainties and doubts concerning the Soviet posat-IC! network displayed by Somov at the First SCAR Conference at the Lague in rebruary, 1958, when he .1 6AW64 Approved For Relea P61-00391 R000200240001-2 Approved For R end to Indics. :he most prominent in number as well as in extensiveness of geographic not be continued,. While initially the motivations for these ambitious efforts may have been primar ly scientific, there are strong indications that governmental approval was probably given for political reasons and for the propaganda value of scoring an achievement in Antarctic exploration which would outdo the Fuchs-.Hillary success. If successful with both crossings, the Soviets,, indeed, will have added a spectacular nation-capturing contribution to the build-up of the Soviet Union as a leading Antarctic power. 10. The sudden possible entry of Poland into Antarctica appears to be a Soviet manusver to gain another Soviet Bloc voice in whatever possible future administrative machinery that may be created under the proposed treaty ar4 in the Special Committee on Antarctic Research as well. U. The lack of a reconrsaiaasarsas-Ntype map coverage of Antarctica represents a basic deficiency in the topographic delineation of the area. The Soviets, aware of this deficiency began mapping and charting from the very outset of their operations, and have repeatedly stressed their progress in new mapping as well an corrections to foreign swips, including US. This boasting., however, is not without considerable justification, Soviet coastal mpping a.-,,4 chartings, including ground-controlled aerial photography, radarscope photograp1i r and echo-soundings, now covers coastal, areas over 3.260 of longitudinal extent with 140x,b more scheduled for the 1M-59 season.. Soviet Antarctic operations have been accomplished with an unueually small commitment of men, ships,, and aircraft. The establishment of a six-station net (including two nearly 900 miles fa the coast) and m eiive coastal :mapping and chartings and geologic and oceanographic urvyes have been achieved with no more, than 3 ships (none iee-b aaker) about 400 pex nne ., and 15-.20 aircraft. xpansion into two wi.deiy'-separated areas of Antarctica ich t a true 59 rim increased their commitment by only one ship and by about 100 additional men. Sow of the fs tors that account for their successes with weir 5= 11 loh effort include (1) multiple, lase of ships - logistics scieentifi.c, cargo (hauling freight return ships), and continuation into seer Arctic Operations (2) intensive air operations the year round - in Jan uary- ovem'f r, 1957, a dozen aircraft on scientific and logistic n ssic ne logged more than 3#000 hrs. and flew 420#000 miles, (3) i reeaeaec mobility by extensive air _6_ Approved For= qg IA-RDP61-00391 R000200240001-2 Approved For Release : CIA-RDP~ R000200240001-2 THIRD DRAFT --- m- - _- - - -- 884 x."epeprWaQ sclen'ti.r (4) use of a -e perienc+ed corps of Arctic protolsojonall The sib.: of the economy of Soviet operations is in (1) its minis diversion of resources from Soviet Arctic operations, and (2) the lesser strain on l even essened by the profits or soviet operations,, which in the 1957-58 season amounted to nearly *6, ,000. 15. The expansion in soviet whaling, fleet operations poses s 10 ranger problems. Soviet benefits from the operations have not been limited to eoononio profits. The whaling flotilla has also Collected scientific data (relative to whaling resources as well as weather, physical geography and climatology) since 1947. In 1957-58 an added scientific team for special studies raisk:'d the number of scientists to 10 including a glaciologist and two geologists. For the 1958-59 season two scientific ships are attached. The whaling fleet has also been used for political ends. The 1957-56 season included landings on two islands of the South Sandwich group (56018'5-X4902718 and 26?)o'W)r and on most of the five emir zbited Ba]lei 162?15' .16 .? .5'E), Metal stake$ Or signs were erected noting the landing. e 1947-48 season the Slavs approached the coast of Antarctica, at the two points where it is claimed that the Bellingshausen expedition discovered the continent, in order to verify the physical geographic plausibility-of that discovery, With the construction of a second and possibly a third fleet, Soviet capabilities will be increased to augment Antarctic operationey, whaling as well, as scientific. As a result of mounting Soviet whaling producttion, the Norwegians have recently expressed alan at the danger of Soviet domination of the industry in the area. if such were to happen, Soviet presence would r expanded in another area of activity. yurthermoree if one were to postulate the Possibility- of Soviet use of the factor, ships for hauling artificial earth satellites and even missiles the fleet could eventually emerge as another significant tool in extension of Soviet power in the Southern Hemisphere. Since the interuatjonal Whaling Cession has not as yet established an independent observer program to monitor whales-cate,rg regulations governing the conduct of whaling, there is no method by which surveillance could be set up to gain knowledge of use of Soviet factory ships for these purposes. rogram proposed by Norway in 1955 an a proton'V1 to the International Whaling Convention; as of 1958 ratification by xi,co, Brasil Approved For R DP61-00391 R000200240001-2 ds (66 ?.i.5' -67 ?ts0' S Approved For Release 00391 R000200240001-2 T Der Soviet refusal to share certain of activities to date ?,- chiefly, new sailing pilota,, hydrographic charts,, echo~.eoundinge, radarse;ope photography, large-scale maps# gravity data, improvements in aide to polar navigation -- creates an imbalance that could have undesirable long-range military implications. 34Iceberg B-15 Calving In Antarctica
By Jacques Descloitres, MODIS Land Science Team
A massive iceberg (known as B-15) broke off the Ross Ice Shelf near Roosevelt Island in Antarctica in mid-March 2000. Top Left image: March 3, before the calving; Top Right image: March 17, just after the calving; Bottom Left image: March 20; Bottom Right image: March 28, just after the calving of B-17, a comparatively small chunk to the left of B-15. Among the largest ever observed, the B-15 iceberg is approximately 300 km long and 40 km wide–an area about twice the size of the state of Delaware. The iceberg was formed from glacier ice moving off the Antarctic continent. The ice calved along pre-existing cracks in the Ross Ice Shelf.<br/>(MODIS Data Type: MODIS-PFM; MODIS Band Combination: 1, 4, 3) Sensor: Terra/MODIS. Data Start Date: 3/3/00. Data End Date: 3/28/00.

35C-16, C-19 And B-15A Icebergs In The Ross Sea, Antarctica
Data Start Date: 10/22/02. Data End Date: 10/22/02.

36Amundsen Sea, Antarctica
By Jacques Descloitres, MODIS Rapid Response Team, NASA/GSFC
In West Antarctica, Pine Island Bay (along right center edge on Nov. 4; roughly centered in other images) carves deeply into the Walgreen (left) and Eights (right) Coasts. Eights Coasts terminates in the Abbott Ice Shelf, which is sandwiched between the continent and Thurston Island. The Walker Mountains on Thurston Island rise up out of the surrounding ice shelf (center). These images were acquired by the <a HREF="http://modis.gsfc.nasa.gov" target="outlink">Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer</a> (MODIS) on the <a HREF="http://terra.nasa.gov/" target="outlink">Terra</a> satellite. By Jacob Griffin (JNegator)
While waiting for the GWAR; Rumble In Antarctica Miniature Game rule book to arrive i decided i needed figures. the real minis are damn near impossible to find, being the game is 20 years old, so i decided to make my own. i also figured that there were probably others in the same situation i'm in, so hope this helps, there will be more to come...unless they stop me... if you don't know GWAR... check them out... "The Armored Clown", Flattus attributes his explosive guitar-style to a strict diet of vegetarians. Often the brunt of cruel jokes, to which he replies with devastating farts. Hail Flattus! 49GlomCo Sell-out Musicians - GWAR: Rumble In Antarctica (4540327)
After selling out to Glomco they were drained of their Jizmoglobin by Skulhedface and are ripe to be his/her goon army the musicians are all models from https://desktophero3d.com/ that have been very lightly modified, and these: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:614295 https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2067994 https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:894789 https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2055705 https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:855883 https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2409806

50DTIC ADA295072: Detection Of Crevasses Near McMurdo Station, Antarctica With Airborne Short-Pulse Radar.
By Defense Technical Information Center
Airborne short-pulse radar is evaluated experimentally as a rapid reconnaissance tool for locating snow-bridged crevasses. An immediate need for a crevasse detector is present within the U.S. Antarctic Program, which is planning a major surface traverse from McMurdo to deliver construction materials to South Pole Station. This feasibility study of a crevasse detection system was performed near McMurdo Station, Antarctica, in January 1994. The radar utilized pulses centered near 200 and 500 MHz and was operated from a low flying helicopter with altitude and speed as variables. A global positioning system (GPS) was used for survey control. Results are presented over glacial ice on Ross Island and at various locations on the Ross Ice Shelf near White and Black Islands and near the Aurora Glacier terminus. These studies include a control line along which crevasse width and snow-bridge thickness were measured, transects along which crevasses were apparent, and also where crevasses were expected, but were not apparent. Strong evidence of crevassing was recorded at flight speeds near 20 m 5-1 (45 mph), at altitudes near 15 m, and at a data acquisition rate of 51 scans/second. Crevasses are detected by the reflections and diffractions from distorted layering in snow bridges, and by the strong diffractions from within the crevasses. The strongest diffractions apparently emanated from within the crevasse and not from the base of the snow bridge. Along the control line, a crevasse with no surface expression was detected by radar and verified by probing and digging. Transects devoid of crevasses show layering without the small scale distortion seen over snow bridges.
