1The Mass-Dependence Of Angular Momentum Evolution In Sun-Like Stars

By

To better understand the observed distributions of rotation rate and magnetic activity of sun-like and low-mass stars, we derive a physically motivated scaling for the dependence of the stellar-wind torque on Rossby number. The torque also contains an empirically-derived scaling with stellar mass (and radius), which provides new insight into the mass-dependence of stellar magnetic and wind properties. We demonstrate that this new formulation explains why the lowest mass stars are observed to maintain rapid rotation for much longer than solar-mass stars, and simultaneously, why older populations exhibit a sequence of slowly rotating stars, in which the low-mass stars rotate more slowly than solar-mass stars. The model also reproduces some previously unexplained features in the period-mass diagram for the Kepler field, notably: the particular shape of the "upper envelope" of the distribution, suggesting that ~95% of Kepler field stars with measured rotation periods are younger than ~4 Gyr; and the shape of the "lower envelope," corresponding to the location where stars transition between magnetically saturated and unsaturated regimes.

2The Effect Of Orbital Angular Momentum On Nondiffracting Ultrashort Optical Pulses

By

We introduce a new class of nondiffracting optical pulses possessing orbital angular momentum. By generalizing the X-waves solution of the Maxwell equation, we discover the coupling between angular momentum and the temporal degrees of freedom of ultra-short pulses. The spatial twist of propagation invariant light pulse turns out to be directly related to the number of optical cycles. Our results may trigger the development on novel multi-level classical and quantum transmission channels free of dispersion and diffraction, may also find application in the manipulation of nano-structured objects by ultra-short pulses, and for novel approaches to the spatio-temporal measurements in ultrafast photonics.

4Nondestructive Measurement Of Orbital Angular Momentum For An Electron Beam

By

Free electrons with a helical phase front, referred to as "twisted" electrons, possess an orbital angular momentum (OAM) and, hence, a quantized magnetic dipole moment along their propagation direction. This intrinsic magnetic moment can be used to probe material properties. Twisted electrons thus have numerous potential applications in materials science. Measuring this quantity often relies on a series of projective measurements that subsequently change the OAM carried by the electrons. In this Letter, we propose a nondestructive way of measuring an electron beam's OAM through the interaction of this associated magnetic dipole with a conductive loop. Such an interaction results in the generation of induced currents within the loop, which are found to be directly proportional to the electron's OAM value. Moreover, the electron experiences no OAM variations and only minimal energy losses upon the measurement, and, hence, the nondestructive nature of the proposed technique.

7NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19940026629: A Study Of Angular Momentum Loss In Binaries Using The Free Lagrange Method

By

The evolution of a binary star system depends greatly on the angular momentum losses in the system brought about by gravitational radiation and mass outflow (e.g., evaporating winds and magnetic braking) from the secondary component of the binary. Using a three-dimensional hydrodynamic fluid code based on the free Lagrange method, we study the loss of specific angular momentum from a binary system due to an evaporative wind from the companion of a millisecond pulsar. We consider binaries of different mass ratios and winds of different initial velocities and in particular attempt to model the system PSR 1957+20. We are in the process of incorporating the effect of the radiation force from the pulsar and the magnetic field of the companion on the mass outflow. The latter effect would also enable us to study magnetic braking in cataclysmic variables and low-mass X-ray binaries.

9Stray, Swing And Scatter: Angular Momentum Evolution Of Orbits And Streams In Aspherical Potentials

By

In aspherical potentials orbital planes continuously evolve. The gravitational torques impel the angular momentum vector to precess, that is to slowly stray around the symmetry axis, and nutate, i.e. swing up and down periodically in the perpendicular direction. This familiar orbital pole motion - if detected and measured - can reveal the shape of the underlying gravitational potential, the quantity only crudely gauged in the Galaxy so far. Here we demonstrate that the debris poles of stellar tidal streams show a very similar straying and swinging behavior, and give analytic expressions to link the amplitude and the frequency of the pole evolution to the flattening of the dark matter distribution. While these results are derived for near-circular orbits, we show they are also valid for eccentric orbits. Most importantly, we explain how the differential orbital plane precession leads to the broadening of the stream and show that streams on polar orbits ought to scatter faster. We provide expressions for the stream width evolution as a function of the axisymmetric potential flattening and the angle from the symmetry plane and prove that our models are in good agreement with streams produced in N-body simulations. Interestingly, the same intuition applies to streams whose progenitors are on short or long-axis loops in a triaxial potential. Finally, we present a compilation of the Galactic cold stream data, and discuss how the simple picture developed here, along with stream modelling, can be used to constrain the symmetry axes and flattening of the Milky Way.

10Blue Stragglers As Stellar Collision Products: The Angular Momentum Question

By

We investigate the structure and evolution of blue stragglers stars which were formed from direct stellar collisions between main sequence stars in globular clusters. In particular, we look at the rotational evolution of the products of off-axis collisions. As found in previous work, such blue stragglers initially have too high an angular momentum to contract down to the main sequence. We consider angular momentum loss through either disc locking or locking to an outflowing wind and show that both methods allow the merged object to shed sufficient angular momentum to contract down to the main sequence.

12Constraining The Efficiency Of Angular Momentum Transport With Asteroseismology Of Red Giants: The Effect Of Stellar Mass

By

Context: Constraints on the internal rotation of red giants are now available thanks to asteroseismic observations. Preliminary comparisons with rotating stellar models indicate that an undetermined additional process for the internal transport of angular momentum is required in addition to purely hydrodynamic processes. Aims: We investigate how asteroseismic measurements of red giants can help us characterize the additional transport mechanism. Methods: We first determine the efficiency of the missing transport mechanism for the low-mass red giant KIC 7341231 by computing rotating models that include an additional viscosity corresponding to this process. We then discuss the change in the efficiency of this transport of angular momentum with the mass, metallicity and evolutionary stage. Results: In the case of the low-mass red giant KIC 7341231, we find that the viscosity corresponding to the additional mechanism is constrained to the range 1 x 10^3 - 1.3 x 10^4 cm^2/s. This constraint on the efficiency of the unknown additional transport mechanism during the post-main sequence is obtained independently of any specific assumption about the modelling of rotational effects during the pre-main sequence and the main sequence (in particular, the braking of the surface by magnetized winds and the efficiency of the internal transport of angular momentum before the post-main-sequence phase). When we assume that the additional transport mechanism is at work during the whole evolution of the star together with a solar-calibrated braking of the surface by magnetized winds, the range of nu_add is reduced to 1 - 4 x 10^3 cm^2/s. In addition to being sensitive to the evolutionary stage of the star, we show that the efficiency of the unknown process for internal transport of angular momentum increases with the stellar mass.

14Plasmon Assisted Transmission Of High Dimensional Orbital Angular Momentum Entangled State

By

We present an experimental evidence that high dimensional orbital angular momentum entanglement of a pair of photons can be survived after a photon-plasmon-photon conversion. The information of spatial modes can be coherently transmitted by surface plasmons. This experiment primarily studies the high dimensional entangled systems based on surface plasmon with subwavelength structures. It maybe useful in the investigation of spatial mode properties of surface plasmon assisted transmission through subwavelength hole arrays.

15On Matrix Elements Of Phase-angular Momentum Commutator In Hilbert Space Of Arbitrary Dimensions

By

We discuss correspondence between the predictions of quantum theories for rotation angle formulated in infinite and finite dimensional Hilbert spaces, taking as example, the calculation of matrix elements of phase-angular momentum commutator. A new derivation of the matrix elements is presented in infinite space, making use of a unitary transformation that maps from the state space of periodic functions to non-periodic functions, over which the spectrum of angular momentum operator is in general, fractional. The approach can be applied to finite dimensional Hilbert space also, for which identical matrix elements are obtained.

18Angular Momentum I Ground State Probabilities Of Boson Systems Interacting By Random Interactions

By

In this paper we report our systematic calculations of angular momentum $I$ ground state probabilities ($P(I)$) of boson systems with spin $l$ in the presence of random two-body interactions. It is found that the P(0) dominance is usually not true for a system with an odd number of bosons, while it is valid for an even number of bosons, which indicates that the P(0) dominance is partly connected to the even number of identical particles. It is also noticed that the $P(I_{max})$'s of bosons with spin $l$ do not follow the 1/N ($N=l+1$, referring to the number of independent two-body matrix elements) relation. The properties of the $P(I)$'s obtained in boson systems with spin $l$ are discussed.

19Surface Polaritons On Metallic And Semiconducting Cylinders: A Complex Angular Momentum Analysis

By

We revisit scattering of electromagnetic waves from metallic and semiconducting cylinders in the framework of complex angular momentum techniques. We prove that "resonant surface polariton modes" are generated by a unique surface wave, i.e. a surface polariton, propagating close to the cylinder surface. This surface polariton corresponds to a particular Regge pole of the $S$-matrix of the cylinder. From the associated Regge trajectory we can construct semiclassically the spectrum of the complex frequencies of the resonant surface polariton modes which can be considered as Breit-Wigner-type resonances. Furthermore, by taking into account Stokes' phenomenon, we derive an asymptotic expression for the position in the complex angular momentum plane of the surface polariton Regge pole. We then describe semiclassically the surface polariton and provide analytical expressions for its the dispersion relation and its damping. All these features allow us to consider the photon-cylinder system as a kind of artificial atom where the photon plays the role of the electron. Finally, we briefly discuss the implication of our results for two-dimensional photonic crystals.

20High Temperature Universal Properties Of Atomic Gases Near Feshbach Resonance With Non-Zero Orbital Angular Momentum

By

We show that the high temperature behavior of atomic gases near Feshbach Resonance with non-zero orbital angular momentum $(\ell >0)$ belong to a universality class different from that of s-wave resonances. The universal interaction energy is $2(2\ell +1)$ times larger than that of the s-wave when approaching the resonance from the atomic side, but is essentially zero on the molecular side; contrary to s-wave resonances where interaction energies on both sides are the same except for a sign change. The measurement of these universality properties should be feasible in current experiments.

21Quark Spin And Orbital Angular Momentum In The Baryon

By

The spin and orbital angular momentum carried by different quark flavors in the nucleon are calculated in the SU(3) chiral quark model with symmetry-breaking. The model is extended to all octet and decuplet baryons. In this model, the reduction of the quark spin, due to the spin dilution in the chiral splitting processes, is transferred into the orbital motion of quarks and antiquarks. The orbital angular momentum for each quark flavor in the proton as function of the partition factor $\kappa$ and the chiral splitting probability $a$ is shown. Although the total amount of the quark spin reduction is canceled by the the equal amount increase of the quark orbital angular momentum, the cancellation does not apply to each quark flavor. Especially, the cancellation between the spin and orbital contributions in the baryon magnetic moment is discussed. Comparisons of our results with other models are also shown.

22Spin Angular Momentum Transfer From TEM00 Focused Gaussian Beams To Negative Refractive Index Spherical Particles.

By

This article is from Biomedical Optics Express , volume 2 . Abstract We investigate optical torques over absorbent negative refractive index spherical scatterers under the influence of linear and circularly polarized TEM00 focused Gaussian beams, in the framework of the generalized Lorenz-Mie theory with the integral localized approximation. The fundamental differences between optical torques due to spin angular momentum transfer in positive and negative refractive index optical trapping are outlined, revealing the effect of the Mie scattering coefficients in one of the most fundamental properties in optical trapping systems.

25Energy And Angular Momentum Of The Gravitational Field In The Teleparallel Geometry

By

The Hamiltonian formulation of the teleparallel equivalent of general relativity is considered. Definitions of energy, momentum and angular momentum of the gravitational field arise from the integral form of the constraint equations of the theory. In particular, the gravitational energy-momentum is given by the integral of scalar densities over a three-dimensional spacelike hypersurface. The definition for the gravitational energy is investigated in the context of the Kerr black hole. In the evaluation of the energy contained within the external event horizon of the Kerr black hole we obtain a value strikingly close to the irreducible mass of the latter. The gravitational angular momentum is evaluated for the gravitational field of a thin, slowly rotating mass shell.

26Improving Student Understanding Of Addition Of Angular Momentum In Quantum Mechanics

By

We describe the difficulties advanced undergraduate and graduate students have with concepts related to addition of angular momentum in quantum mechanics. We also describe the development and implementation of a research-based learning tool, a Quantum Interactive Learning Tutorial (QuILT), to reduce these difficulties. The preliminary evaluation shows that the QuILT related to the basics of the addition of angular momentum is helpful in improving students' understanding of these concepts.

27NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19730015124: Skylab Attitude Control And Angular Momentum Desaturation With One Double-gimbaled Control Moment Gyro

By

In case two control moment gyros fail, attitude control of Skylab can be maintained with the thruster attitude control system. This results, however, in a severely increased fuel consumption, depleting the fuel in a few days. Therefore, an alternate concept was developed which does not have large fuel consumption under any circumstances. In this concept the attitude reference is commanded to oscillate in the orbital plane with twice the orbital frequency and the remaining control moment gyro controls about orbital north and about the minimum moment-of-inertia axis, while the thruster attitude control system controls rate only about the remaining axis. This rate control in conjunction with the restoring torque due to the gravity gradient will keep bounded the excursion of the minimum moment-of-inertia axis out of the orbital plane. This alternate concept has the additional advantage that it needs no information on the principal moment-of-inertia axes misalignment and is completely insensitive to star tracker failure. Proper phasing of the attitude reference oscillation even allows angular momentum desaturation, which is responsible for the insensitivity of the thruster fuel consumption to unknown disturbances, like vent torques and magnetic torques.

31NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19910007627: Energy And Angular Momentum Transfer In Binary Galaxies

By

The authors numerically studied tidal effects of a massive perturber on a satellite galaxy. The model consists of a spherical satellite galaxy and a point mass perturber and the encounter is non-penetrating. A wide range of density ratios and eccentricities of the relative orbits have been considered. The disruption of the satellite galaxy has been observed when the numerical value of the fractional change in the energy is greater than two. The changes in the energy and angular momentum show smooth variation in the case of unbound orbits and irregular variation in the bound orbit cases. It is shown that for a constant pericentral distance, increasing the density ratio decreases the tidal effects; and for a given density ratio an increase in the eccentricity decreases the tidal effects.

34Unveiling The Orbital Angular Momentum And Acceleration Of Electron Beams

New forms of electron beams have been intensively investigated recently, including vortex beams carrying orbital angular momentum, as well as Airy beams propagating along a parabolic trajectory. Their traits may be harnessed for applications in materials science, electron microscopy and interferometry, and so it is important to measure their properties with ease. Here we show how one may immediately quantify these beams' parameters without need for additional fabrication or non-standard microscopic tools. Our experimental results are backed by numerical simulations and analytic derivation.

37NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19960001208: Sloshing Dynamics Modulated Fluid Angular Momentum And Moment Fluctuations Driven By Orbital Gravity Gradient And Jitter Accelerations In Microgravity

By

The dynamical behavior of spacecraft propellant affected by the asymmetric combined gravity gradient and jitter accelerations, in particular the effect of surface tension on partially-filled rotating fluids applicable to a full-scale Gravity Probe-B Spacecraft dewar tank has been investigated. Three different cases of orbital accelerations: (1) gravity gradient-dominated, (2) equally weighted between gravity gradient and jitter, and (3) gravity jitter-dominated accelerations are studied. The results of slosh wave excitation along the liquid-vapor interface induced by gravity gradient-dominated accelerations provide a torsional moment with tidal motion of bubble oscillations in the rotating dewar. The results are clearly seen from the twisting shape of the bubble oscillations driven by gravity gradient-dominated acceleration. The results of slosh wave excitation along the liquid-vapor interface induced by gravity jitter-dominated acceleration indicate the results of bubble motion in a manner of down-and-up and leftward-and-rightward movement of oscillation when the bubble is rotating with respect to rotating dewar axis. Fluctuations of angular momentum, fluid moment and bubble mass center caused by slosh wave excitations driven by gravity gradient acceleration or gravity jitter acceleration are also investigated.

38NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19750010210: Teleoperator Control For Passivation Of Satellites Possessing Angular Momentum

By

Certain space shuttle missions may require the retrieval of passive spinning and processing satellites. One proposed means of retrieval utilizes a free-flying teleoperator launched from the shuttle. The feasibility of nulling the combined spin and precession (passivation) of a typical rigid satellite is first established using a Lagrangian formulation. It is shown that a proposed asymmetric teleoperator cannot be used for passivation in its present form because it would quickly tumble over after being spun-up to synchronize with the angular rates of the satellite. In addition, a dynamic analysis is made of the combined teleoperator-satellite system where an initial misalignment of their respective angular momentum vectors is assumed.

40NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20060009492: On Whether Angular Momentum In Electric And Magnetic Fields Radiates To Infinity

By

The Feynman Disk experiment and a related thought experiment with a static magnetic field and capacitor are studied. The mechanical torque integrated over time (angular impulse) is related to the angular momentum in the electric/magnetic field. This is not called an electromagnetic field since quasi-static as well as electromagnetic effects are included. The angular momentum in the electric/magnetic field is examined to determine its static and radiative components. This comparison was then examined to see if it clarified the Abraham-Minkowski paradox.

42DTIC ADA580205: The Localization Of Angular Momentum In Optical Waves Propagating Through Turbulence

By

This is the first in a series of papers demonstrating that photons with orbital angular momentum can be created in optical waves propagating through distributed turbulence. The scope of this first paper is much narrower. Here, we demonstrate that atmospheric turbulence imparts non-trivial angular momentum to beams and that this non-trivial angular momentum is highly localized. Furthermore, creation of this angular momentum is a normal part of propagation through atmospheric turbulence.

44Spontaneous Breaking Of Rotational Symmetry In Rotating Solitons - A Toy Model Of Excited Nucleons With High Angular Momentum

By

We study the phenomenon of spontaneous breaking of rotational symmetry (SBRS) in the rotating solutions of two types of baby Skyrme models. In the first the domain is a two-sphere and in the other, the Skyrmions are confined to the interior of a unit disk. Numerical full-field results show that when the angular momentum of the Skyrmions increases above a certain critical value, the rotational symmetry of the solutions is broken and the minimal energy configurations become less symmetric. We propose a possible mechanism as to why SBRS is present in the rotating solutions of these models, while it is not observed in the `usual' baby Skyrme model. Our results might be relevant for a qualitative understanding of the non-spherical deformation of excited nucleons with high orbital angular momentum.

46NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20010033248: Establishing An IERS Sub-Center For Ocean Angular Momentum

By

With the objective of establishing the Special Bureau for the Oceans (SBO), a new archival center for ocean angular momentum (OAM) products, we have computed and analyzed a number of OAM products from several ocean models, with and without data assimilation. All three components of OAM (axial term related to length of day variations and equatorial terms related to polar motion) have been examined in detail, in comparison to the respective Earth rotation parameters. An 11+ year time series of OAM given at 5-day intervals has been made publicly available. Other OAM products spanning longer periods and with higher temporal resolution, as well as products calculated from ocean model/data assimilation systems, have been prepared and should become part of the SBO archives in the near future.

48A Compact Trench-Assisted Multi-Orbital-Angular-Momentum Multi-Ring Fiber For Ultrahigh-Density Space-Division Multiplexing (19 Rings X 22 Modes).

By

This article is from Scientific Reports , volume 4 . Abstract We present a compact (130 μm cladding diameter) trench-assisted multi-orbital-angular-momentum (OAM) multi-ring fiber with 19 rings each supporting 22 modes with 18 OAM ones. Using the high-contrast-index ring and trench designs, the trench-assisted multi-OAM multi-ring fiber (TA-MOMRF) features both low-level inter-mode crosstalk and inter-ring crosstalk within a wide wavelength range (1520 to 1630 nm), which can potentially enable Pbit/s total transmission capacity and hundreds bit/s/Hz spectral efficiency in a single TA-MOMRF. Moreover, the effective refractive index difference of even and odd fiber eigenmodes induced by the ellipticity of ring and fiber bending and their impacts on the purity of OAM mode and mode coupling/crosstalk are analyzed. It is found that high-order OAM modes show preferable tolerance to the ring ellipticity and fiber bending. The designed fiber offers favorable tolerance to both small ellipticity of ring (
