1Light Curve Analysis Of Hipparcos Data For The Massive O-type Eclipsing Binary UW CMa

By

Hipparcos photometric data for the massive O-type binary UW CMa were analysed within the framework of the Roche model. Photometric solutions were obtained for five mass ratios in the $q=M_2/M_1=0.5-1.5$ range. The system is found to be in a contact configuration. Independently of $q$, the best-fitting model solutions correspond to the orbital inclination $i \sim 71^\circ$ and the temperature of the secondary component $T_2 \sim 33500\,K$, at the fixed temperature of the primary $T_1=33750 K$. Considering that the spectrum of the secondary is very weak, photometric solutions corresponding to the contact configuration favor the mass ratio $q$ smaller than unity (in which case the luminosity of the secondary is smaller than that of the primary). The absolute parameters of the system are estimated for different values of the mass ratio.

2Analysis Of LIGO Data For Gravitational Waves From Binary Neutron Stars

By

We report on a search for gravitational waves from coalescing compact binary systems in the Milky Way and the Magellanic Clouds. The analysis uses data taken by two of the three LIGO interferometers during the first LIGO science run and illustrates a method of setting upper limits on inspiral event rates using interferometer data. The analysis pipeline is described with particular attention to data selection and coincidence between the two interferometers. We establish an observational upper limit of $\mathcal{R}

3ERIC ED046971: Studies Of Horst's Procedure For Binary Data Analysis.

By

Most responses to educational and psychological test items may be represented in binary form. However, such dichotomously scored items present special problems when an analysis of correlational interrelationships among the items is attempted. Two general methods of analyzing binary data are proposed by Horst to partial out the effects of differences in item difficulties: (1) a least square simplex data matrix solution, and (2) a least square simplex covariance matrix solution. Of these, the first was selected for study using (1) a regression approach, (2) a raw data approach, and (3) the computational algorithm for the raw data matrix approach. The results indicate that Horst's modification clearly induces an effect that contaminates the common factor structure of the variables. Further, the findings also indicate that image, alpha, and principal components analysis of correlation matrices obtained from binary data matrices are all satisfactory methods of analysis without the modification. This may be an important finding since it tends to confirm earlier empirical findings concerning the varying difficulties of binary items. (CK)

4A Data-analysis Driven Comparison Of Analytic And Numerical Coalescing Binary Waveforms: Nonspinning Case

By

We compare waveforms obtained by numerically evolving nonspinning binary black holes to post-Newtonian (PN) template families currently used in the search for gravitational waves by ground-based detectors. We find that the time-domain 3.5PN template family, which includes the inspiral phase, has fitting factors (FFs) >= 0.96 for binary systems with total mass M = 10 ~ 20 Msun. The time-domain 3.5PN effective-one-body template family, which includes the inspiral, merger and ring-down phases, gives satisfactory signal-matching performance with FFs >= 0.96 for binary systems with total mass M = 10 ~ 120 Msun. If we introduce a cutoff frequency properly adjusted to the final black-hole ring-down frequency, we find that the frequency-domain stationary-phase-approximated template family at 3.5PN order has FFs >= 0.96 for binary systems with total mass M = 10 ~ 20 Msun. However, to obtain high matching performances for larger binary masses, we need to either extend this family to unphysical regions of the parameter space or introduce a 4PN order coefficient in the frequency-domain GW phase. Finally, we find that the phenomenological Buonanno-Chen-Vallisneri family has FFs >= 0.97 with total mass M=10 ~ 120Msun. The main analyses use the noise spectral-density of LIGO, but several tests are extended to VIRGO and advanced LIGO noise-spectral densities.

6GEE Analysis Of Clustered Binary Data With Diverging Number Of Covariates

By

Clustered binary data with a large number of covariates have become increasingly common in many scientific disciplines. This paper develops an asymptotic theory for generalized estimating equations (GEE) analysis of clustered binary data when the number of covariates grows to infinity with the number of clusters. In this "large $n$, diverging $p$" framework, we provide appropriate regularity conditions and establish the existence, consistency and asymptotic normality of the GEE estimator. Furthermore, we prove that the sandwich variance formula remains valid. Even when the working correlation matrix is misspecified, the use of the sandwich variance formula leads to an asymptotically valid confidence interval and Wald test for an estimable linear combination of the unknown parameters. The accuracy of the asymptotic approximation is examined via numerical simulations. We also discuss the "diverging $p$" asymptotic theory for general GEE. The results in this paper extend the recent elegant work of Xie and Yang [Ann. Statist. 31 (2003) 310--347] and Balan and Schiopu-Kratina [Ann. Statist. 32 (2005) 522--541] in the "fixed $p$" setting.

9Systematic Review Of Methods For Individual Patient Data Meta- Analysis With Binary Outcomes.

By

This article is from BMC Medical Research Methodology , volume 14 . Abstract Background: Meta-analyses (MA) based on individual patient data (IPD) are regarded as the gold standard for meta-analyses and are becoming increasingly common, having several advantages over meta-analyses of summary statistics. These analyses are being undertaken in an increasing diversity of settings, often having a binary outcome. In a previous systematic review of articles published between 1999–2001, the statistical approach was seldom reported in sufficient detail, and the outcome was binary in 32% of the studies considered. Here, we explore statistical methods used for IPD-MA of binary outcomes only, a decade later. Methods: We selected 56 articles, published in 2011 that presented results from an individual patient data meta-analysis. Of these, 26 considered a binary outcome. Here, we review 26 IPD-MA published during 2011 to consider: the goal of the study and reason for conducting an IPD-MA, whether they obtained all the data they sought, the approach used in their analysis, for instance, a two-stage or a one stage model, and the assumption of fixed or random effects. We also investigated how heterogeneity across studies was described and how studies investigated the effects of covariates. Results: 19 of the 26 IPD-MA used a one-stage approach. 9 IPD-MA used a one-stage random treatment-effect logistic regression model, allowing the treatment effect to vary across studies. Twelve IPD-MA presented some form of statistic to measure heterogeneity across studies, though these were usually calculated using two-stage approach. Subgroup analyses were undertaken in all IPD-MA that aimed to estimate a treatment effect or safety of a treatment,. Sixteen meta-analyses obtained 90% or more of the patients sought. Conclusion: Evidence from this systematic review shows that the use of binary outcomes in assessing the effects of health care problems has increased, with random effects logistic regression the most common method of analysis. Methods are still often not reported in enough detail. Results also show that heterogeneity of treatment effects is discussed in most applications.

10ERIC ED442866: Comparison Of Similarity Measures In Cluster Analysis With Binary Data.

By

One set of approaches to the problem of clustering with dichotomous data in cluster analysis (CA) was studied. The techniques developed for clustering with binary data involve calculating distances between observations based on the variables and then applying one of the standard CA algorithms to these distances. One of the groups of distances that are designed for binary data is known collectively as matching coefficients. There are several incarnations of matching coefficients, but all take as their main goal the measurement of response similarity between any two observations. Thus, distance and similarity come to express the same concept with respect to the observations. This study examined four measures of association that are common to four previous studies. Using Monte Carlo simulation, cluster analysis was conducted using the four distance measures. Under the conditions of this study, the four measures performed very much the same in terms of correctly classifying individuals into two clusters based on dichotomous variables. Another interesting result is that clustering solutions were virtually identical for samples of size 240 and 1,000. (Contains 6 tables, 6 figures, and 12 references.) (SLD)

13Analysis Framework For The Prompt Discovery Of Compact Binary Mergers In Gravitational-wave Data

By

We describe a stream-based analysis pipeline to detect gravitational waves from the merger of binary neutron stars, binary black holes, and neutron-star-black-hole binaries within ~ 1 minute of the arrival of the merger signal at Earth. Such low-latency detection is crucial for the prompt response by electromagnetic facilities in order to observe any fading electromagnetic counterparts that might be produced by mergers involving at least one neutron star. Even for systems expected not to produce counterparts, low-latency analysis of the data is useful for deciding when not to point telescopes, and as feedback to observatory operations. Analysts using this pipeline were the first to identify GW151226, the second gravitational-wave event ever detected. The pipeline also operates in an offline mode, in which it incorporates more refined information about data quality and employs acausal methods that are inapplicable to the online mode. The pipeline's offline mode was used in the detection of the first two gravitational-wave events, GW150914 and GW151226, as well as the identification of a third candidate, LVT151012.

15A Unifying Theory For Genetic Epidemiological Analysis Of Binary Disease Data.

By

This article is from Genetics, Selection, Evolution : GSE , volume 46 . Abstract Background: Genetic selection for host resistance offers a desirable complement to chemical treatment to control infectious disease in livestock. Quantitative genetics disease data frequently originate from field studies and are often binary. However, current methods to analyse binary disease data fail to take infection dynamics into account. Moreover, genetic analyses tend to focus on host susceptibility, ignoring potential variation in infectiousness, i.e. the ability of a host to transmit the infection. This stands in contrast to epidemiological studies, which reveal that variation in infectiousness plays an important role in the progression and severity of epidemics. In this study, we aim at filling this gap by deriving an expression for the probability of becoming infected that incorporates infection dynamics and is an explicit function of both host susceptibility and infectiousness. We then validate this expression according to epidemiological theory and by simulating epidemiological scenarios, and explore implications of integrating this expression into genetic analyses. Results: Our simulations show that the derived expression is valid for a range of stochastic genetic-epidemiological scenarios. In the particular case of variation in susceptibility only, the expression can be incorporated into conventional quantitative genetic analyses using a complementary log-log link function (rather than probit or logit). Similarly, if there is moderate variation in both susceptibility and infectiousness, it is possible to use a logarithmic link function, combined with an indirect genetic effects model. However, in the presence of highly infectious individuals, i.e. super-spreaders, the use of any model that is linear in susceptibility and infectiousness causes biased estimates. Thus, in order to identify super-spreaders, novel analytical methods using our derived expression are required. Conclusions: We have derived a genetic-epidemiological function for quantitative genetic analyses of binary infectious disease data, which, unlike current approaches, takes infection dynamics into account and allows for variation in host susceptibility and infectiousness.

16A Composite Likelihood Ratio Approach To The Analysis Of Correlated Binary Data In Genetic Association Studies

By

The likelihood function represents statistical evidence in the context of data and a probability model. Considerable theory has demonstrated that evidence strength for different parameter values can be interpreted from the ratio of likelihoods at different points on the likelihood curve. The likelihood function can, however, be unknown or difficult to compute; e.g. for genetic association studies with a binary outcome in large multi-generational families. Composite likelihood is a convenient alternative to using the real likelihood and here we show composite likelihoods have valid evidential interpretation. We show that composite likelihoods, with a robust adjustment, have two large sample performance properties that enable reliable evaluation of relative evidence for different values on the likelihood curve: (1) The composite likelihood function will support the true value over the false value by an arbitrarily large factor; and (2) the probability of favouring a false value over a true value with high probability is small and bounded. Using an extensive simulation study, and in a genetic association analysis of reading disability in large complex pedigrees, we show that the composite approach yields valid statistical inference. Results are compared to analyses using generalized estimating equations and show similar inference is obtained, although the composite approach results in a full likelihood solution that provides additional complementary information.

17ERIC ED471226: A Comparison Of The Relative Practical Value Of A Predictive Discriminant Function Analysis And A Binary Logistic Regression Analysis Of Student Success In An Innovative Alternative High School Program In South Texas: Data Set #1. Working Paper.

By

This study compared two statistical approaches, predictive discriminant function analysis and binary logistic regression analysis, to determine the characteristics of at-risk students who succeeded in comparison with those who did not succeed in a project-based alternative high school program. The study also investigated true positive hit rates for predicting correctly the students that would be successful using each statistical approach to provide information for decision making in admissions decisions for this program. Data came from the Wisconsin Youth Survey from measures of bonding with teachers, school, and peers and from a measure of educational engagement completed by 70 students. Other variables measured were family composition, student employment, grade, gender, and age. The predictive discriminant analysis approach produced a true positive hit rate of 79% compared to the remarkable 94% of the binary logistic approach. Advantages of the binary logistic approach are discussed. (SLD)

19Annual Modulation Of The Galactic Binary Confusion Noise Bakground And LISA Data Analysis

By

We study the anisotropies of the Galactic confusion noise background and its effects on LISA data analysis. LISA has two data streams of the gravitational waves signals relevant for low frequency regime. Due to the anisotropies of the background, the matrix for their confusion noises has off-diagonal components and depends strongly on the orientation of the detector plane. We find that the sky-averaged confusion noise level $\sqrt {S(f)}$ could change by a factor of 2 in three months, and would be minimum when the orbital position of LISA is either around the spring or autumn equinox.

20DTIC ADA139817: Statistical Analysis Of Very High-Dimensional Data Sets Of Hierarchically Structured Binary Variables With Missing Data And Application To Marine Corps Readiness Evaluations

By

The present analysis deals with very high-dimensional data sets, each one containing close to nine hundred binary variables. Each data set corresponds to an evaluation of one complex system. These data sets are characterized by large portions of missing data where, moreover, the unobserved variables are not the same in different evaluations. Thus, the problems which confront the statistical analysis are those of multivariate binary data analysis, where the number of variables is much larger than the sample size and in which missing data varies with the sample elements. The variables, however, are hierarchically structured and the problem of clustering variables to groups does not exist in the present study. In order to motivate the statistical problem under consideration, the Marine Corps Combat Readiness Evaluation System (MCCRES) is described for infantry battalions and then used for exposition. The present paper provides a statistical model for data from MCCRES and develops estimation and prediction procedures which utilize the dependence structure. The E-M algorithm is applied to obtain maximum likelihood estimates of the parameters of interest. Numerical examples illustrate the proposed methods.

21The Green Bank Telescope 350 MHz Drift-scan Survey II: Data Analysis And The Timing Of 10 New Pulsars, Including A Relativistic Binary

By

We have completed a 350 MHz drift scan survey using the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope with the goal of finding new radio pulsars, especially millisecond pulsars that can be timed to high precision. This survey covered ~10300 square degrees and all of the data have now been fully processed. We have discovered a total of 31 new pulsars, seven of which are recycled pulsars. A companion paper by Boyles et al. (2012) describes the survey strategy, sky coverage, and instrumental set-up, and presents timing solutions for the first 13 pulsars. Here we describe the data analysis pipeline, survey sensitivity, and follow-up observations of new pulsars, and present timing solutions for 10 other pulsars. We highlight several sources---two interesting nulling pulsars, an isolated millisecond pulsar with a measurement of proper motion, and a partially recycled pulsar, PSR J0348+0432, which has a white dwarf companion in a relativistic orbit. PSR J0348+0432 will enable unprecedented tests of theories of gravity.

22Identification Problem For The Analysis Of Binary Data With Non-ignorable Missing

By

When a missing-data mechanism is NMAR or non-ignorable, missingness is itself vital information and it must be taken into the likelihood, which, however, needs to introduce additional parameters to be estimated. The incompleteness of the data and introduction of more parameters can cause the identification problem. When a response variable is binary, it becomes a more serious problem because of less information of bi- nary data, however, there are no methods to briefly verify whether a mode is identified or not. Therefore, we provide a new necessary and sufficient condition to easily check model identifiability when analyzing binary data with non-ignorable missing by condi- tional models. This condition can give us what condition is needed for a model to have identifiability as well as make easily check the identifiability of a model.

25Analysis Of Binary Spatial Data By Quasi-likelihood Estimating Equations

By

The goal of this paper is to describe the application of quasi-likelihood estimating equations for spatially correlated binary data. In this paper, a logistic function is used to model the marginal probability of binary responses in terms of parameters of interest. With mild assumptions on the correlations, the Leonov-Shiryaev formula combined with a comparison of characteristic functions can be used to establish asymptotic normality for linear combinations of the binary responses. The consistency and asymptotic normality for quasi-likelihood estimates can then be derived. By modeling spatial correlation with a variogram, we apply these asymptotic results to test independence of two spatially correlated binary outcomes and illustrate the concepts with a well-known example based on data from Lansing Woods. The comparison of generalized estimating equations and the proposed approach is also discussed.

27Red Giants In Eclipsing Binary And Multiple-Star Systems: Modeling And Asteroseismic Analysis Of 70 Candidates From Kepler Data

By

Red-giant stars are an incredible source of information for testing models of stellar evolution, as asteroseismology has opened up a window into their interiors. Such insights are a direct result of the unprecedented data from space missions Kepler and CoRoT as well as recent theoretical advances. Eclipsing binaries are also fundamental astrophysical objects, and when coupled with asteroseismology, binaries would provide two independent methods to obtain masses and radii and exciting opportunities to develop highly constrained stellar models. The possibility of discovering pulsating red giants in eclipsing binary systems is therefore an important goal that could potentially offer very robust characterization of these systems. Hitherto, only 1 case has been discovered with Kepler. We cross-correlated the detected red-giant and eclipsing-binary catalogs from Kepler data to find candidate systems. Light-curve modeling and mean asteroseismic properties are combined to yield measurements of periods, masses, radii, temperatures, eclipse timing variations, core rotation rates, and red-giant evolutionary state. After elimination of false positives, out of the 70 systems common to the red-giant and eclipsing-binary catalogs we find 13 new strong candidates that are pulsating red giants in eclipsing binaries, and 10 more that are pulsating red giants in hierarchical triple systems. The systems span a range of orbital eccentricities, periods, and spectral types for the red-giant companion. One case even suggests a system composed of two red-giants. The discovery of pulsating red giants in multiple systems provides exciting test beds for precise astrophysical modeling, and follow-up spectroscopic observations of the candidate systems are encouraged.

28A Sensitivity Analysis Framework For The Treatment Effect Measure Used In The Meta-analysis Of Comparative Binary Data From Randomised Controlled Trials.

By

This article is from Statistics in Medicine , volume 32 . Abstract The process of undertaking a meta-analysis involves a sequence of decisions, one of which is deciding which measure of treatment effect to use. In particular, for comparative binary data from randomised controlled trials, a wide variety of measures are available such as the odds ratio and the risk difference. It is often of interest to know whether important conclusions would have been substantively different if an alternative measure had been used. Here we develop a new type of sensitivity analysis that incorporates standard measures of treatment effect. Thus, rather than examining the implications of a variety of measures in an ad hoc manner, we can simultaneously examine an entire family of possibilities, including the odds ratio, the arcsine difference and the risk difference. 3Crusades

By

The Crusades were a series of religious wars fought between 1096 and 1272 to recover the Holy Land from Islamic rule. According to the Latin Church, Crusaders were penitent pilgrims whose sins were forgiven. British historian, George Cox, writes of the churchmen, great and small, who inspired the Crusades, of the warriors who left families and lands behind, of the wily Venetian merchants and Byzantine emperors who exploited the knights, and of the valor of the Saracens. Here are accounts of sublime sacrifice and bestial ferocity, of dynastic conflict within the Crusader States, of sieges, starvation, pestilence, and ambush, and of the clash and interpenetration of two cultures. - Summary by Pamela Nagami, M.D.

8Athenian Empire

By

The British historian, George W. Cox writes that the "whole duration of the Athenian empire extends over little more than two generations." This confederation of Greek city states with Athens at its head was an attempt to present a unified front to the Persian Empire. But ultimately, the strife between democratic and oligarchic factions within each polis, combined with the tangle of alliances between the various city states, led to the ruinous and protracted Peloponnesian War. In this short work, Cox describes the battles on land and sea, and such personalities as the Athenian general, Nikias, his Spartan counterpart, Agis, and, above all, unprincipled, charismatic Alcibiades. 9Lives of Greek Statesmen

By

In the darkest days of the Persian War when the armies of Xerxes were overrunning northern Greece, Athens faced destruction. The desperate Athenians consulted the oracle at Delphi, who answered, "For thus saith Zeus, that when all else within the land of Cecrops is wasted, the wooden wall alone shall not be taken." The British historian, George Cox agrees with many other authorities that the Greek statesman, Themistocles, bribed the oracle. Realizing that their survival depended upon a strong navy, he declared that the prophesy meant that the Persians would be defeated, not by fortifying Athens, but by "the fight at sea, for the fleet is your wooden wall." This book is a short history of the founding fathers of Athens, its lawgivers, tyrants, and generals: Solon, Peisistratos, Kleisthenes, Miltiades, Aristeides, and, above all, Themistocles. The object of this little book is to bring the reader nearer to the great masters in the realm of music, and make him or her acquainted with the man who worked, played, and suffered as do other men. Though confining themselves to a simple style, the authors have tried to enter into the life of each composer, and, wherever possible, by means of earnest study of letters and other data which have come down to us, to copy that composer's tricks of speech, manner of writing, and various idiosyncracies. - Summary by Preface
