4DTIC ADA150152: Optimum Design And Automated Dynamic Analysis Of Flexible Mechanisms.
By Defense Technical Information Center
Flexible Mechanisms such as slider crank and four-bar mechanisms are modeled and their dynamic instability and optimum design analyzed. The primary aim of the project was a thorough understanding and analysis of conditions of dynamic instability in flexible components of mechanisms and robots. Dynamic instability characterizes the behavior when amplitude of vibrations have a tendency to become unbounded with the passage of time. Other aims of the study included the optimal design of mechanisms on the basis of flexibility and control of stresses and deflections.

5A Game-Theoretic Model For Analysis And Design Of Self-Organization Mechanisms In IoT
By Vahid Behzadan and Banafsheh Rekabdar
We propose a framework based on Network Formation Game for self-organization in the Internet of Things (IoT), in which heterogeneous and multi-interface nodes are modeled as self-interested agents who individually decide on establishment and severance of links to other agents. Through analysis of the static game, we formally confirm the emergence of realistic topologies from our model, and analytically establish the criteria that lead to stable multi-hop network structures.

6DTIC ADA094408: Design And Analysis Of Update Mechanisms Of A Database Computer (DBC).
By Defense Technical Information Center
This report shows how the process of update is carried out in the database computer (DBC) which is a specialized back-end database machine capable of managing data of 10 to the 10 power bytes in size. Since DBC might often have to be used in an update-intensive environment (that is, an environment where many update, delete and insert commands and only a few retrieve commands are issued), we have indicated throughout this report, the kind of architectural enhancements which will provide good performance in an update-intensive environment. Perhaps the most important enhancement that affects the performance of all the four types of requests in DBC (retrieve, delete, insert and update) is the incorporation of a track-size buffer with each TIP. The advantages that accrue as a result of the incorporation are clearly demonstrated in the various sections of the report.

By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
The Aerospace Mechanisms Symposium (AMS) provides a unique forum for those active in the design, production and use of aerospace mechanisms. A major focus is the reporting of problems and solutions associated with the development and flight certification of new mechanisms. Sponsored and organized by the Mechanisms Education Association, responsibility for hosting the AMS is shared by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company (LMSSC). Now in its 43rd symposium, the AMS continues to be well attended, attracting participants from both the U.S. and abroad. The 43rd AMS was held in Santa Clara, California on May 4, 5 and 6, 2016. During these three days, 42 papers were presented. Topics included payload and positioning mechanisms, components such as hinges and motors, CubeSats, tribology, and mechanism testing. Hardware displays during the supplier exhibit gave attendees an opportunity to meet with developers of current and future mechanism components. The high quality of this symposium is a result of the work of many people, and their efforts are gratefully acknowledged. This extends to the voluntary members of the symposium organizing committee representing the eight NASA field centers, LMSSC, and the European Space Agency. Appreciation is also extended to the session chairs, the authors, and particularly the personnel at ARC responsible for the symposium arrangements and the publication of these proceedings. A sincere thank you also goes to the symposium executive committee who is responsible for the year-to-year management of the AMS, including paper processing and preparation of the program. The use of trade names of manufacturers in this publication does not constitute an official endorsement of such products or manufacturers, either expressed or implied, by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

8DTIC ADA498063: A New Approach To Assessment And Design Of Insensitive Munitions By Analysis Of Critical Mechanisms That May Be Initiated By Unplanned Stimuli
By Defense Technical Information Center
It is not possible to comprehensively model the tests used in insensitive munitions (IM) assessment. Neither is it possible to directly correlate small scale (laboratory) tests to the all-up-round (AUR) IM tests. Yet AUR IM tests are extremely expensive and by themselves they give little or no reliable information about the real vulnerability of the round under test. Therefore it is of prime importance that if possible, modelling and laboratory tests are used to increase confidence in IM assessment or ideally to reduce the amount of AUR testing needed. This paper discusses the present IM assessment method and proposes an improved alternative method that makes maximum use of currently available modelling and laboratory testing technology. This method is based on an initial threat hazard assessment followed by an analysis of the Critical Reaction Initiation and growth MEchanismS (CRIMES) that may ensue.
