Direction finding (DF) systems are critical components in electronic warfare intercept receivers. Many existing radio frequency DF techniques use a non-linear frequency down-conversion process that generates spurious frequencies that can hide the signals-of-interest. In addition, these systems suffer from a limited bandwidth and poor resolution (e.g., 2 degrees). To overcome these limitations, a miniature microwave photonic phase-sampling DF technique is investigated in this thesis. This front-end design uses a combination of integrated optical Mach-Zehnder phase detectors to measure the emitters phase difference with the largest baseline being 23 cm. The front-end components were characterized to ensure accuracy in the resolved angle-of-arrival (AOA). The front-end design was constructed to be modular in order to facilitate testing and verification of analog components accuracy. Signal processing with a class IV laser required particular attention to ensure that any stray radiation or leakage was isolated. Testing with low probability of intercept (LPI) waveform modulation consisted of using a linear frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) and a phase coded P4 modulation, both at 2.4 GHz, in an anechoic chamber. Measurements were taken to quantify the DF receiver sensitivity was R = -62.96 dBm. It was demonstrated that the system was capable of estimating the AOA for the FMCW signal with a root-mean square (RMS) error of 0.29 degree at 1 degree resolution and a P4 modulation RMS error of 0.32 degree at 1 degree resolution.

Due to their reliability, performance and rapid prototyping, programmable logic devices overcome the use of ASICs in the digital system design. However, the similar solution for analog signals was not so easy to find. But the evolutionary trend in Very Large Scale Integrated (VLSI) circuits technologies fuelled by fierce industrial competition to reduce integrated circuits (ICs) cost and time to market has led to design the Field-Programmable Analog Array (FPAA) which is the analog equivalent of the Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). In fact, the use of FPAAs reduces the complexity of analog design, decreases the time to market and allows products to be easily updated and improved outside the manufacturing environment. Thus, the reconfigurable feature of FPAAs enables real time updating of analog functions within the system using the Configurable Analog Blocks (CABs) system and appropriate software. In this paper, an interesting analog phase shift detection circuit based on FPAA architecture is presented. In fact, the phase shift detection circuit will distinguish a faulty circuit from a faulty-free one by controlling the phase shift between their corresponding outputs. The system is practically designed and simulated by using the AN221E04 board which is an Anadigm product. The Circuit validation was carried out using the AnadigmDesigner®2 software.

Process, supply voltage, and temperature (PVT) are three important factors which contribute to performance variation of the complementary metal – oxide – semiconductor (CMOS) based analog circuits. In this paper, CMOS based analog circuit design with the PVT v ariation effects are explored. The effects of the PVT variation on the performance of CMOS based analog circuits are introduced. The optimization of CMOS based analog circuits such as differential amplifier (DA) and two - stage operational amplifier (op amp ) circuits with PVT variations with different algorithms such as cockoo search (CS), particle swam optimization (PSO), hybrid CSPSO , and differential evaluation (DE) algorithms is presented. Each algorithm is implemented using the C programming language, i nterfaced with Ngspice circuit simulator, and tested on the I ntel®core™ i5, 2.40 GHz processor with 8 GB internal RAM using the Ubuntu operating system (OS). The result shows PVT variation affects the performance of CMOS circuit.

The objective of this effort was to: (a) develop novel and fundamental methodologies for data representation using hardware-based spike timing dependent encoding for neuromorphic processors; (b) build a new design of computationally efficient delay-based reservoirs that meet the requirements of high dimensionality and finite memory. This project resulted in an agile analog integrated circuit design of a spike-time encoding circuit as a signal conditioner and electronic reservoir as a dynamic processor for the reservoir computing systems. This is a multidisciplinary effort bridged high-performance computing, nanotechnology, and integrated circuits and systems.
