An investigation of the antiknock effectiveness of various additive-water solutions when used as internal coolants has been conducted at the NACA Cleveland laboratory. Nine compounds have been previously run in a CFR engine and the results are presented. In an effort to find a good anti-knock-coolant additive with more desirable physical properties than those of the nine compounds previously investigated, water solutions of four alkyl amines, three alkanolamines, six amides, and eight heterocyclic compounds were investigated and the results are presented.

Aim: In this study, we aimed to investigate and compare the effect of topical administration of quaternary amines (QA) to tertiary amines (TA) on the pupil size of rabbit eyes. Material and Methods: TA (Pilocarpine and Physostigmine) and QA (Neostigmine and Pyridostigmine) muscarinic agonists were used as pupil constrictors, while TA (Tropicamide and Cyclopentolate) and QA (Hyoscine-N-butylbromide, Ipratropium, Isopropamide, and Hexahydro-adephenine) muscarinic antagonists were used as pupil dilators. Serial dilutions of these drugs (4 concentrations for each) were prepared in distilled water from their preparations available on the market. Their effect on pupil size was measured at 0, 15, 30, 45, 60, 120, and 180 minutes (n=4). Linear plots of the effects of various concentrations were drawn by MS-Excell. The onset and duration of action of QA were compared with the corresponding TA. Results: The onset of action of pupil constriction with TA and QA muscarinic agonists was between 15-30 minutes and the effect lasted for 120-180 minutes. The onset of action of pupil dilatation with TA and QA was also between 15-30 min and effect lasted for > 180 minutes. Discussion: This experimental study demonstrated that the extent of ionization of QA muscarinic agonists or antagonists did not influence their diffusion across ocular tissues cornea and conjunctiva. These drugs can be used topically for pupillary constriction or dilatation.

This article is from BMC Microbiology , volume 13 . Abstract Background: Recent studies have shown that mammalian milk represents a continuous supply of commensal bacteria, including enterococci. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the presence of enterococci in milk of different species and to screen them for several genetic and phenotypic traits of clinical significance among enterococci. Results: Samples were obtained from, at least, nine porcine, canine, ovine, feline and human healthy hosts. Enterococci could be isolated, at a concentration of 1.00 × 102 -1.16 × 103 CFU/ml, from all the porcine samples and, also from 85, 50, 25 and 25% of the human, canine, feline and ovine ones, respectively. They were identified as Enterococcus faecalis, Enterococcus faecium, Enterococcus hirae, Enterococcus casseliflavus and Enterococcus durans. Among the 120 initial enterococcal isolates, 36 were selected on the basis of their different PFGE profiles and further characterized. MLST analysis revealed a wide diversity of STs among the E. faecalis and E. faecium strains, including some frequently associated to hospital infections and novel STs. All the E. faecalis strains possessed some of the potential virulence determinants (cad, ccf, cob, cpd, efaAfs, agg2, gelE, cylA, espfs) assayed while the E. faecium ones only harboured the efaAfm gene. All the tested strains were susceptible to tigecycline, linezolid and vancomycin, and produced tyramine. Their susceptibility to the rest of the antimicrobials and their ability to produce other biogenic amines varied depending on the strain. Enterococci strains isolated from porcine samples showed the widest spectrum of antibiotic resistance. Conclusions: Enterococci isolated from milk of different mammals showed a great genetic diversity. The wide distribution of virulence genes and/or antibiotic resistance among the E. faecalis and E. faecium isolates indicates that they can constitute a reservoir of such traits and a risk to animal and human health.

This paper is part of a larger investigation of the role of amines in the adhesion of polybutadience to glass substrates. It describes near infrared, infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy studies of the interaction of amines with silanol groups usually under ambient conditions but sometimes when heated in air. Ultrasonic velocities, Densities and Viscosities are measured for ternary liquid mixture of formic acid and tri-ethylamine (TEA) with ethanol. From this experimental data freelength, excess freelength, internal pressure and excess internal pressure have been calculated. A new method for the preparation of quaternary ammonium compounds by complete alkylation of primary or secondary amines to their quaternary stage in a one-step procedure is described. The observation that protonation of sterically hindered amines is only slightly affected by steric hindrance, whereas nucleophilicity as measured by the rate of alkylation is considerably decreased, is synthetically utilized. An organic base of greater base strength than the reactant amines is employed to bind the acid generated inalkylation reactions. Thus, a number of aniline derivatives are methylated in the presence of the stronger, but sterically hindered base 2,6-lutidine. The mild and homogenous reaction conditions result in good yields with minimal laboratory manipulations and effort. The method is particularly of importance in reactions where the amines and the alkylating agents possess labile functions.

The delivery of amino acids to the early Earth by comets and their fragments could have been a significant source of the early Earth's prebiotic organic inventory that led to the emergence of life (Chyba and Sagan, 1992). Over 20 organic molecules including methane, ethane, ammonia, cyanic acid, formaldehyde, formamide, acetaldehyde, acetonitrile, and methanol have been identified by radio spectroscopic observations of the comae of comets Hale-Bopp and Hyakutake (Crovisier et al. 2004). These simple molecules could have provided the organic reservoir to allow the forn1ation of more complex prebiotic organic compounds such as amino acids. After a 7 -year mission, the Stardust spacecraft returned to Earth samples from comet Wild 2 on January 15, 2006 providing the opportunity to analyze the organic composition and isotopic distribution of cometary material with state-of-the-art laboratory instrun1entation. The Preliminary Examination Team analyses of organics in samples returned by Stardust were largely focused on particles that impacted the collector aerogel and aluminum foil (Sandford et al. 2006). However, it is also possible that Stardust returned a "diffuse" sample of gas-phase organic molecules that struck the aerogel directly or diffused away from the grains after impact. To test this possibility, samples of Stardust flight aerogel and foil were carried through a hot water extraction and acid hydrolysis procedure to see if primary amine compounds were present in excess of those seen in controls. Here we report highly sensitive liquid chromatography time-of-flight mass spectron1etry measurements of amino acids and amines in samples returned from a comet (Glavin et al. 2008). A suite of amino acids and amines including glycine, L-alanine, methylamine (MA), and ethylamine (EA) were identified in the Stardust bulk aerogel. With the exception of MA and EA, all other primary amines detected in comet-exposed aerogels were also present in the aerogel witness tile that was not exposed to Wild 2, suggesting that most amines are terrestrial in origin. However, the enhanced abundances of MA, EA, and possibly glycine in comet-exposed aerogel compared to controls, coupled with MA to EA ratios (1 to 2) that are distinct from preflight aerogels (7 to 10), suggest that these amines were captured from Wild 2. It is possible that MA and EA were formed on energetically processed icy grains containing methane, ethane, and ammonia. The presence of cometary amines in Stardust material supports the hypothesis that comets were an important source of pre biotic organics on the early Earth. To better understand their origin, a systematic compound specific carbon isotopic analysis (C-CSIA) via gas chromatography quadrupole mass spectrometry in with parallel with combustion isotope ratio mass spectrometry (GC-QMS/IRMS) is being conducted. We will discuss our latest C-CSIA measurements and what they indicate about the origin of amino acids extracted from Stardust samples.

It is possible that MA and EA were formed on energetically processed icy grains containing methane, ethane, and ammonia. The presence of cometary amines in Stardust material supports the hypothesis that comets were an important source of pre biotic organics on the early Earth. To better understand their origin, a systematic compound specific carbon isotopic analysis (C-CSIA) via gas chromatography quadrupole mass spectrometry in with parallel with combustion isotope ratio mass spectrometry (GC-QMS/IRMS) is being conducted. We will discuss our latest C-CSIA measurements and what they indicate about the origin of amino acids extracted from Stardust samples.

The following conclusions were reached: (1) Severe systemic hyperoxia has a significant aggravating effect in the pathogenesis of pulmonary oxygen toxicity; (2) Endogenous circulating and pulmonary tissue biogenic amines do not appear to have a direct relationship with the severity of lung damage by oxygen. (3) Surgical denervation of the lung does not protect it from toxic effects of oxygen; and (4) Pathologic changes in the lungs do not appear to be the consequence of hemodynamic changes while animals breathe 100% oxygen at 1 Ata or 2 Ata until they died. Two families of copolymers containing 4-(2-NITROBENZYLOXY)-CARBAMOYL- styrene as the photoactive component, with styrene or methyl methacrylate as the other component are described. The polymers are prepared by chemical modification of copolymers of 4-amino-styrene with styrene and methyl methacrylate, respectively, using 2-nitrobenzyl chloroformate. The photoactive carbamate groups of both copoly can be removed by irradiation with UV light below 320nm. Quantum yield measurements and comparisons with small molecule model compounds confirm that attachment to the polymer has no effect on the photolability of the 2-nitrobenzyl carbamoyl protecting group. Quantum yield values near 0.10 also compare favorably with those obtained for related small molecules. The photoactive polymers have been tested successfully in the UV induced crosslinking of formulations containing epoxy groups.

This project explored the hypothesis that higher intake of dietary carcinogens (e.g. heterocyclic amines) was associated with elevated risk of prostate cancer. It also explored the potential that polymorphic variation in key metabolism genes may affect risk. The project conducted a case-control study on 392 cases and 342 controls. Biosamples were obtained on over 96% of participants. Initial analyses provide only limited support for our hypothesis, mostly trends without clear statistical significance.

This article is from Pharmaceutics , volume 2 . Abstract Nine diclofenac salts prepared with alkyl-hydroxy amines were analyzed for their properties to form polymorphs by DSC and HSM techniques. Thermograms of the forms prepared from water or acetone are different in most cases, suggesting frequent examples of polymorphism among these salts. Polymorph transition can be better highlighted when analysis is carried out by thermo-microscopy, which in most cases made it possible to observe the processes of melting of the metastable form and re-crystallization of the stable one. Solubility values were qualitatively related to the crystal structure of the salts and the molecular structure of the cation.

This article is from Sensors (Basel, Switzerland) , volume 10 . Abstract We have developed a novel colorimetric sensor based on a digital camera and white LED illumination. Colorimetric sensor arrays (CSAs) were made from a set of six chemically responsive dyes impregnated on an inert substrate plate by solution casting. Six common amine aqueous solutions, including dimethylamine, triethylamine, diisopropylamine, aniline, cyclohexylamine, and pyridine vaporized at 25 °C and six health-related trimethylamine (TMA) concentrations including 170 ppm, 51 ppm, 8 ppm, 2 ppm, 125 ppb and 50 ppb were analyzed by the sensor to test its ability for the qualitative discrimination and quantitative detection of volatile amines. We extracted the feature vectors of the CSA's response to the analytes from a fusional color space, which was obtained by conducting a joint search algorithm of sequential forward selection and sequential backward selection (SFS&SBS) based on the linear discriminant criteria (LDC) in a mixed color space composed of six common color spaces. The principle component analysis (PCA) followed by the hierarchical cluser analysis (HCA) were utilized to discriminate 12 analytes. Results showed that the colorimetric sensor grouped the six amine vapors and five TMA concentrations correctly, while TMA concentrations of 125 ppb and 50 ppb were indiscriminable from each other. The limitation of detection (LOD) of the sensor for TMA was found to be lower than 50 ppb. The CSAs were reusable for TMA concentrations below 8 ppm.

It is a sequel to his earlier novel <em>The Rainbow</em> (1915), and follows the continuing loves and lives of the Brangwen sisters, Gudrun and Ursula. Gudrun Brangwen, an artist, pursues a destructive relationship with Gerald Crich, an industrialist. Lawrence contrasts this pair with the love that develops between Ursula and Rupert Birkin, an alienated intellectual who articulates many opinions associated with the author. The emotional relationships thus established are given further depth and tension by an unadmitted homoerotic attraction between Gerald and Rupert. She is determined that they will grow to be something more than men that come home blackened with coal dust every day and roaring with drink every night. As each grows up and moves away, she must release him. But Paul, she holds; they have a bond that defies time and the attractions of young women. <br /><br />Lawrence originally intended the book's title to be "Paul Morel" and it is on this son - and his lovers - that he spends the bulk of his tale. Those who have an experiential predisposition in their faith would do well to read <i>The Conversations and Letters of Brother Lawrence</i>… if they have not done so already. This is a lesser-known work, often overlooked. These Spiritual Maxims were manuscripts found amongst the aforementioned Letters and also written by Brother Lawrence himself. The Maxims are different from the letters — the careful arrangement adopted suggests matured thought and the inference is not unreasonable that he intended them to sum up his teachings.<br /><br />The reader apologises for the unworthiness of his delivery… the English itself was difficult enough to read and the ancient punctuation had more commas than full stops. My sometimes stilted delivery is caused by me being partially-sighted and having to read everything in short sections. (Introduction by the reader)

Brother Lawrence was born Nicholas Herman around 1610 in Herimenil, Lorraine, a Duchy of France. His birth records were destroyed in a fire at his parish church during the Thirty Years War, a war in which he fought as a young soldier. It was also the war in which he sustained a near fatal injury to his sciatic nerve. The injury left him quite crippled and in chronic pain for the rest of his life.<br /><br /> The details of his early life are few and sketchy. However, we know he was educated both at home and by his parish priest whose first name was Lawrence and who was greatly admired by the young Nicolas. He was well read and, from an early age, drawn to a spiritual life of faith and love for God.<br /><br /> We also know that in the years between the abrupt end of his duties as a soldier and his entry into monastic life, he spent a period of time in the wilderness living like one of the early desert fathers. Also, prior to entering the monastery, and perhaps as preparation, he spent time as a civil servant. In his characteristic, self deprecating way, he mentions that he was a "footman who was clumsy and broke everything".<br /><br /> At mid-life he entered a newly established monastery in Paris where he became the cook for the community which grew to over one hundred members. After fifteen years, his duties were shifted to the sandal repair shop but, even then, he often returned to the busy kitchen to help out.<br /><br /> In times as troubled as today, Brother Lawrence, discovered, then followed, a pure and uncomplicated way to walk continually in God's presence. For some forty years, he lived and walked with Our Father at his side. Yet, through his own words, we learn that Brother Lawrence's first ten years were full of severe trials and challenges.<br /><br /> A gentle man of joyful spirit, Brother Lawrence shunned attention and the limelight, knowing that outside distraction "spoils all". It was not until after his death that a few of his letters were collected. Joseph de Beaufort, representative and counsel to the local archbishop, first published the letters in a small pamphlet. The following year, in a second publication which he titled, 'The Practice of the Presence of God', de Beaufort included, as introductory material, the content of four conversations he had with Brother Lawrence.<br /><br /> In this small book, through letters and conversations, Brother Lawrence simply and beautifully explains how to continually walk with God - not from the head but from the heart. Brother Lawrence left the gift of a way of life available to anyone who seeks to know God's peace and presence; that anyone, regardless of age or circumstance, can practice -anywhere, anytime. Brother Lawrence also left the gift of a direct approach to living in God's presence that is as practical today as it was three hundred years ago.<br /><br /> Brother Lawrence died in 1691, having practiced God's presence for over forty years. Moving on, he spends time with a mining executive's relatives. But he finds the family a stuffy middle-class lot, bored with each other and themselves. He leaves his wife and children and strikes out for the open road. During a playing engagement at an opera performance, he reunites with the mining executive's family. Talk is of love and war, none of it very satisfying to anyone. At dinner with one of the women, Aaron reveals that he is indifferent to most things in life and just wants to be left alone. She eventually marries Leslie although she is sexually attracted to George. George marries the conventional Meg and both marriages end in unhappiness.<br> The countryside of the English midlands is beautifully evoked and there is powerful description also of the impact of industrialisation on both town and country. 26Kangaroo

"Kangaroo" is the nickname of a character in this novel, Benjamin Cooley, who was a charismatic leader in the fascist movement of ex-soldiers who fought in the Australian army in WWII. The story's main character is an international journalist, Richard Lovat Somers who, with his wife, comes to rent a house next door to Jack Calcott and his wife who are natural-born Australians through-and-through. Jack is in league with Kangaroo and tries to persuade Lovat to join their political movement conflicting with the Socialist political faction in the country. Throughout this book, there is an undercurrent of vaguely defined "Generalized Love" which borders closely on homosexuality between the otherwise testosterone-saturated Australian men. Action-wise: There are riots and gunfights; but there are also moments of great tenderness of the men for their wives. Both Jack and Lovat dearly want to become "leaders of men", but Lovat backs away when he is recruited to join in an espionage campaign against the Socialists. Another undercurrent which muddies the waters for Lovat is that he is a true British citizen and thus resented by the Australians. (Summary by williamjones)
