Abstract Background: Activity friendly environments have been identified as promising strategies to increase physical activity levels in the population. Associations between perceived environmental attributes and physical activity in Latin America may vary from those observed in high income countries. The objective of this systematic review is to identify which perceived environmental attributes are associated with physical activity in Latin America. Methods: Systematic literature search of articles published in English, Portuguese, and Spanish in four databases was conducted (PubMed, Virtual Health Library, EBSCO, and Web of Science). Associations with environmental attributes were analyzed separately for physical activity domains. Fifteen articles were included in the analysis. Results: All studies had cross-sectional designs. The majority of associations were statistically non-significant, and only four associations were found in the unexpected direction. Leisure-time and transport-related physical activity were the domains most frequently included in the studies and had higher number of associations in the expected direction. Leisure-time physical activity showed a convincing association in the expected direction with safety during the day. Transport-related physical activity had a convincing association with presence of street lighting. Conclusions: This study shows that perceived environmental attributes and their relationship with physical activity appears to be domain, and context specific. In addition, findings from this study show inconsistencies with the information gathered from high-income countries.

A study surveyed 110 randomly selected students from 16 randomly selected Future Homemakers of America/Home Economics Related Occupations (FHA/HERO) Chapters in high schools in a southern state to identify leadership training topics. Two instruments were used: Demographic Questionnaire and Leadership Training Topic Questionnaire (LTTQ). The LTTQ contained 22 items, identified through a literature review, for assessing student member perceptions regarding relevant topics that could be used for training student officers. Instrument design allowed students to check topics perceived important using a yes/no format for inclusion in leadership training. Analysis consisted of frequency and percentage distributions, principal component analysis, and analysis of variance. Results revealed a clear factor pattern of the leadership training topics, and 20 of the 22 training topics were perceived to be of sufficient importance for inclusion in leadership training designed for high school home economics students. Three recommendations were made: incorporate leadership training into all FHA/HERO chapter activities; continue leadership training, initially using the top 5 or 10 topics and incorporating others as needed; and develop leadership training packets. This study aims to provide an answer to the following research questions among White Americans, Black Americans, Latine Americans, and Asian Americans, 18 and over, currently living and born in the US: (1) To what extent are ingroup ownership perceptions of the country inferred based on perceptions of ingroup investment? And is this relationship stronger among individuals who find investment an important principle for determining ownership? (2) How are country ownership perceptions, in turn, related to collective action on behalf of one’s ingroup?

Abstract Background: Human rights approaches to manage HIV and efforts to decriminalize HIV exposure/transmission globally offer hope to persons living with HIV (PLWH). However, among vulnerable populations of PLWH, substantial human rights and structural challenges (disadvantage and injustice that results from everyday practices of a well-intentioned liberal society) must be addressed. These challenges span all ecosocial context levels and in North America (Canada and the United States) can include prosecution for HIV nondisclosure and HIV exposure/transmission. Our aims were to: 1) Determine if there were associations between the social structural factor of criminalization of HIV exposure/transmission, the individual factor of perceived social capital (resources to support one’s life chances and overcome life’s challenges), and HIV antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence among PLWH and 2) describe the nature of associations between the social structural factor of criminalization of HIV exposure/transmission, the individual factor of perceived social capital, and HIV ART adherence among PLWH. Methods: We used ecosocial theory and social epidemiology to guide our study. HIV related criminal law data were obtained from published literature. Perceived social capital and HIV ART adherence data were collected from adult PLWH. Correlation and logistic regression were used to identify and characterize observed associations. Results: Among a sample of adult PLWH (n = 1873), significant positive associations were observed between perceived social capital, HIV disclosure required by law, and self-reported HIV ART adherence. We observed that PLWH who have higher levels of perceived social capital and who live in areas where HIV disclosure is required by law reported better average adherence. In contrast, PLWH who live in areas where HIV transmission/exposure is a crime reported lower 30-day medication adherence. Among our North American participants, being of older age, of White or Hispanic ancestry, and having higher perceived social capital, were significant predictors of better HIV ART adherence. Conclusions: Treatment approaches offer clear advantages in controlling HIV and reducing HIV transmission at the population level. These advantages, however, will have limited benefit for adherence to treatments without also addressing the social and structural challenges that allow HIV to continue to spread among society’s most vulnerable populations.
