Impact behavior of cold rolled AA6061 and AA 7020 aluminum alloys were investigated by Charpy impact test. Four longitudinal and long transverse and short transverse (in two groove positions) were studied. The groove angles were 30, 45, 60 and 90 degrees and temperatures tests were dry ice, zero degrees, ambient and boiling water temperatures. Two samples of each variable were taken to ensure the distribution range. Also for strengthening of aluminum alloys T65 precipitation hardening heat treatment was used. The results showed that increasing temperature increased the amount of impact energy and impact energy value decreased with increasing groove angle and failure mode altered from shear to flat and a mixture of both. Samples had the minimum amount of impact energy in the rolling longitudinal direction and the maximum amount of impact energy in the short transverse direction. About 85% of consumed aluminum are processed products such as cold rolled plates, which use casting ingots as a raw material and turn into the final product with subsequent processes, and during these processes, the microstructure also changes.

As of late 2013, the capacity of aluminum foil in China, as the world’s largest producer of aluminum sheets, strips and foils, hit 3.4 million tons/a; the capacity of aluminum cold rolling sheet/strip and aluminum hot rolling strip both reached 12.5 million tons/a.

This report covers an investigation of various aluminum alloy wires suitable for a rolling helix energy absorber strut (TOR-SHOK) for use in crashworthy troop seats. Several aluminum alloy wire types were investigated to determine the linear stroking distance that the device could endure prior to the breaking of the helical wires, and to ascertain compatibility with the 6061-T6 aluminum tubes that are used as the struts to transmit the impact forces into the energy-absorbing helical wires. Once the wire was selected, several struts were fabricated and tested. In addition, two units were subjected to environmental tests, in accordance with Military Standard 810B, and were statically tested after the environmental tests. This study indicated that the most compatible aluminum wire to be used with the 6061-T6 aluminum tubing is the 5056-H38 series aluminum wire. The devices, after being subjected to the environmental tests, as performed the same as those devices that were not subjected to the environmental tests. This was primarily a result of properly anodizing and sealing the aluminum tubing.

A high-strength weldable Al-Mg alloy, CS19, was fabricated into plate from large ingots on production rolling mills to evaluate feasibility. Plate in 6.3 mm (.250-in.) and 25.4 mm (1.0-in.) thicknesses was produced from two commercial sizes of ingot with no difference in product characteristics observed between plates fabricated from either size ingot. Tests on 25.4 mm thick CS19 plate and weldments showed it to have as-welded minimum yield strength of 207 MPa (30 ksi) and corrosion and fracture toughness equivalent to or better than 5456-H116 or H117 alloys. CS19 plate was shown to have more rapid rate of stress-corrosion crack growth than 5456 under some conditions but equal resistance to SCC initiation. The thinner plate and weldments had higher strength but lower toughness which was equivalent to that of 5456 of the same thickness. SCC resistance of the thinner plate and weldments was also good except for SCC resistance of weldments after thermal treatments simulating long service times. Greater strain in thinner plate produced an HAZ structure susceptible to SCC after thermal treatment. (Author)
