This is an EEG study about sudden insights (aha-effects) during visual perception of persons depicted in scene images. In the crucial phase of the experiment (the second phase, or insight phase), participants are presented with short written scene descriptions inspired by comedy TV shows (e.g., “[Politician] Joe B., seen here enjoying his invisible corn”), followed by pictures that either match the description or not (e.g., a photograph of said politician mid speech, with his hands and mouth looking as though he might be holding an invisible corn cob). We expect matching descriptions to often trigger sudden insights into / a new perspective on what the depicted person might be feeling, thinking or doing — something that would not have been obvious without the description. These sudden insights may sometimes be experienced as funny. We expect non matching descriptions to not (or rarely) trigger such insights. We are interested in 1) in-the-moment top-down influences on person perception and 2) the neural underpinnings of aha-effects, sudden insights triggering “informed perception”, when a piece of information changes our perspective in-the-moment, compared to “uninformed perception”, when no such insight or perspective change happens. We use EEG and event-related potentials to track neural correlates of perception with a sudden insight (“aha effect”) vs. without such an insight (“no aha effect”), with high temporal resolution. To have a baseline for the neural processing of each image, in the first phase (pre-insight) participants see each image once without a preceding description. Furthermore, to investigate downstream neural consequences of previously informed vs. uninformed perception on repeated processing of the same images, each image is once again presented without a description in the third phase (post-insight).
