2DTIC ADA053447: The Design Of An Optimum Alphanumeric Symbol Set For Cockpit Displays.

The purpose of this study was to design an alphanumeric symbol set with improved legibility which could be implemented as a standardized set for cockpit displays. PATTERN RECOGNITION THEORY WAS APPLIED IN WHICH THE TWO-DIMENSIONAL, DISCRETE, Fourier transform was used to obtain the feature space for each symbol. Spatial lowpass filtering techniques were employed and a decision rule was used based on the maximum nearest prototype Euclidian distance between symbols. A symbol change algorithm was developed in which symbols were moved away from their two closest neighbors in the transformed domain. Lincoln/Mitre, a highly legible font, was used as the initial prototype set. A new alphanumeric symbol set was designed with 18 changed symbols that had an overall greater distance spread between nearest neighbor symbols. The Lincoln/Mitre and a new test set were psychophysically tested with results indicating a 9.5% better performance for the changed symbols over the original Lincoln/Mitre symbols. (Author)

These predictors include CRT and matrix display symbol generation variables, CRT raster structure and phosphor variables, together with other variables such as symbol format and display surface anti-glare treatment. This report discusses a number of significant problems associated with the development and application of conventional human engineering display specifications and presents a detailed specification for comparative and objective evalaution of video monitor legibility performance based upon legibility tests developed for the USAF. This specification consists of criteria for subject selection, visual environment design, display monitor setup, test material design and presentation, legibility task scores, and legibility test performance. Twenty-four highly experienced fighter pilots were used to ascertain the relative performance effectiveness of three display format types evaluated in the context of CRT weapons displays used in advanced fighter cockpits. The formats considered were alphanumeric, which used complete words and numbers; black-and-white graphics, which used a pictorial example of the aircraft and bomb load status; and color graphics, which also used pictorial representation but added color-coding. Color graphics formats were superior to alphanumeric and black-and-white formats when, (a) short exposure durations were used, (b) complex questions were used, and (c) questions were presented after the subject viewed the display presentation. Overall results indicate that in combat environments that produce high levels of workload on a pilot, color-coding is superior to other coding formats in the presentation of weapons status information.

This specification consists of criteria for subject selection, visual environment design, display monitor setup, test material design and presentation, legibility task scores, and legibility test performance. It is to be noted that this report is a revision of an earlier report. While the specification for the Legibility Test has not undergone any major change, the propose Minimum Conventional Legibility Criteria have been reduced in number. The revised report also includes a new appendix describing in detail a standardized procedure for measuring CRT symbol luminance and calculating contrast ratios.

Conventional human engineering legibility specifications for alphanumeric symbology displayed on video monitors consist of predictors of user performance derived from legibility research studies. Typical legibility predictors are symbol size, symbol luminance, contrast ratio, font, dot matrix dimensions, and pixel active area. This report discusses a number of significant problems associated with the development and application of conventional legibility specifications.
