2Universal Classes For Algebraic Groups

By

We exhibit cocycles representing certain classes in the rational cohomology of of the general linear group with coefficients in the divided powers of a Frobenius twist of the adjoint representation. These classes' existence was anticipated by van der Kallen, and they intervene in the proof that reductive linear algebraic groups have finitely generated cohomology algebras.

3Compactifications And Algebraic Completions Of Limit Groups

By

In this paper we consider the existence of dense embeddings of Limit groups in locally compact groups generalizing earlier work of Breuillard, Gelander, Souto and Storm [GBSS] where surface groups were considered. Our main results are proved in the context of compact groups and algebraic groups over local fields. In addition we prove a generalization of the classical Baumslag lemma which is a useful tool for generating eventually faithful sequences of homomorphisms. The last section is dedicated to correct a mistake from [BGSS] and to get rid of the even genus assumption.

4Representations Of Fundamental Groups Of Algebraic Manifolds And Their Restrictions To Fibers Of A Fibration

By

We use pluriharmonic maps to study representations of fundamental groups of algebraic manifolds. This approach is functorial in the sense that the restriction of such a map to a fiber of a fibration remains pluriharmonic, and on this basis, we can investigate the relation between the properties of the original representation and what can be inferred by restricting it to the fibers of a fibration.

5Non-G-completely Reducible Subgroups Of The Exceptional Algebraic Groups

By

Let G be an exceptional algebraic group defined over an algebraically closed field k of characteristic p>0 and let H be a subgroup of G. Then following Serre we say H is G-completely reducible or G-cr if, whenever H is contained in a parabolic subgroup P of G, then H is in a Levi subgroup of that parabolic. Building on work of Liebeck and Seitz, we find all triples (X,G,p) such that there exists a closed, connected, simple non-G-cr subgroup H

6Seshadri Constants And Interpolation On Commutative Algebraic Groups

By

In this article we study interpolation estimates on a special class of compactifications of commutative algebraic groups constructed by Serre. We obtain a large quantitative improvement over previous results due to Masser and the first author and our main result has the same level of accuracy as the best known multiplicity estimates. The improvements come both from using special properties of the compactifications which we consider and from a different approach based upon Seshadri constants and vanishing theorems.

7Algebraic Invariants For Bestvina-Brady Groups

By

Bestvina-Brady groups arise as kernels of length homomorphisms from right-angled Artin groups G_\G to the integers. Under some connectivity assumptions on the flag complex \Delta_\G, we compute several algebraic invariants of such a group N_\G, directly from the underlying graph \G. As an application, we give examples of Bestvina-Brady groups which are not isomorphic to any Artin group or arrangement group.

8Rationality Of Almost Simple Algebraic Groups

We prove the stable rationality of almost simple algebraic groups, the connected components of the Dynkin diagram of anisotropic kernel of which contain at most two vertices. The (stable) rationality of many isotropic almost simple groups with small anisotropic kernel and some related results over $p$-adic and arbitrary fields are discussed.

9Perturbative Algebraic Quantum Field Theory And The Renormalization Groups

By

A new formalism for the perturbative construction of algebraic quantum field theory is developed. The formalism allows the treatment of low dimensional theories and of non-polynomial interactions. We discuss the connection between the Stueckelberg-Petermann renormalization group which describes the freedom in the perturbative construction with the Wilsonian idea of theories at different scales . In particular we relate the approach to renormalization in terms of Polchinski's Flow Equation to the Epstein-Glaser method. We also show that the renormalization group in the sense of Gell-Mann-Low (which characterizes the behaviour of the theory under the change of all scales) is a 1-parametric subfamily of the Stueckelberg-Petermann group and that this subfamily is in general only a cocycle. Since the algebraic structure of the Stueckelberg-Petermann group does not depend on global quantities, this group can be formulated in the (algebraic) adiabatic limit without meeting any infrared divergencies. In particular we derive an algebraic version of the Callan-Symanzik equation and define the beta-function in a state independent way.

10$\R$-trees And Laminations For Free Groups I: Algebraic Laminations

By

This paper is the first of a sequence of three papers, where the concept of an $\mathbb R$-tree dual to a measured geodesic lamination in a hyperbolic surface is generalized to arbitrary $\mathbb R$-trees provided with a (very small) action of the free group $F_N$ of finite rank $N\geq 2$ by isometries. Three different definitions are given and they are proved to be equivalent. We also describe the topology and Out$(F_N)$-action on the space of laminations.

11Killing Symmetries Of Generalized Minkowski Spaces. 1-Algebraic-infinitesimal Structure Of Space-time Rotation Groups

By

In this paper, we introduce the concept of N-dimensional generalized Minkowski space, i.e. a space endowed with a (in general non-diagonal) metric tensor, whose coefficients do depend on a set of non-metrical coodinates. This is the first of a series of papers devoted to the investigation of the Killing symmetries of generalized Minkowski spaces. In particular, we discuss here the infinitesimal-algebraic structure of the space-time rotations in such spaces. It is shown that the maximal Killing group of these spaces is the direct product of a generalized Lorentz group and a generalized translation group. We derive the explicit form of the generators of the generalized Lorentz group in the self-representation and their related, generalized Lorentz algebra. The results obtained are specialized to the case of a 4-dimensional, ''deformed'' Minkowski space $% \widetilde{M_{4}}$, i.e. a pseudoeuclidean space with metric coefficients depending on energy.

13Shintani Descent For Algebraic Groups And Almost Characters Of Unipotent Groups

By

In this paper, we extend the notion of Shintani descent to general (possibly disconnected) algebraic groups defined over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$. For this, it is essential to treat all the pure inner $\mathbb{F}_q$-rational forms of the algebraic group at the same time. We prove that the notion of almost characters (introduced by T. Shoji using Shintani descent) is well defined for any neutrally unipotent algebraic group, i.e. an algebraic group whose neutral connected component is a unipotent group. We also prove that these almost characters coincide with the "trace of Frobenius" functions associated with Frobenius-stable character sheaves on neutrally unipotent groups. In the course of the proof, we also prove that the modular categories that arise from Boyarchenko-Drinfeld's theory of character sheaves on neutrally unipotent are in fact positive integral confirming a conjecture due to Drinfeld.

16Almost Algebraic Actions Of Algebraic Groups And Applications To Algebraic Representations

By

Let G be an algebraic group over a complete separable valued field k. We discuss the dynamics of the G-action on spaces of probability measures on algebraic G-varieties. We show that the stabilizers of measures are almost algebraic and the orbits are separated by open invariant sets. We discuss various applications, including existence results for algebraic representations of amenable ergodic actions. The latter provides an essential technical step in the recent generalization of Margulis-Zimmer super-rigidity phenomenon due to Bader and Furman.

18Compact And Discrete Subgroups Of Algebraic Quantum Groups I

By

Let $G$ be a locally compact group. Consider the C$^*$-algebra $C_0(G)$ of continuous complex functions on $G$, tending to 0 at infinity. The product in $G$ gives rise to a coproduct $\Delta_G$ on the C$^*$-algebra $C_0(G)$. A locally compact {\it quantum} group is a pair $(A,\Delta)$ of a C$^*$-algebra $A$ with a coproduct $\Delta$ on $A$, satisfying certain conditions. The definition guarantees that the pair $(C_0(G),\Delta_G)$ is a locally compact quantum group and that conversely, every locally compact quantum group $(A,\Delta)$ is of this form when the underlying C$^*$-algebra $A$ is abelian. Assume now that $G$ is a locally compact group with a compact open subgroup $K$. The algebra of complex functions on $G$ of {\it polynomial type} is a dense multiplier Hopf $^*$-algebra with positive integrals (i.e. an algebraic quantum group}. The characteristic function of $K$ is a group-like projection in this algebraic quantum group. In this paper, we study group-like projections in an arbitrary algebraic quantum group. We find several associated objects that generalize the classical objects associated to a compact open subgroup of a locally compact group.

19Actions Of Linear Algebraic Groups On Projective Manifolds And Minimal Model Program

By

Let X be a smooth projective variety of dimension n on which a simple Lie group G acts regularly and non trivially. Then X is not minimal in the sense of the Minimal Model Program. In the paper we work out a classification of X via the Minimal Model Program under the assumption that the dimension of X is small with the respect to the dimension of G. More precisely we classify all such X with n smaller or equal to (r_G +1), where r_G is the minimum codimension of the maximal parabolic subgroup of G (for instance r_{SL(m)}= m-1). We consider also the case when G = SL(3) and X is a smooth 4-fold on which G acts with an open orbit.

21The Orbit Method For The Baum-Connes Conjecture For Algebraic Groups Over Local Function Fields

By

The main purpose of this paper is to modify the orbit method for the Baum-Connes conjecture as developed by Chabert, Echterhoff and Nest in their proof of the Connes-Kasparov conjecture for almost connected groups \cite{MR2010742} in order to deal with linear algebraic groups over local function fields (i.e., non-archimedean local fields of positive characteristic). As a consequence, we verify the Baum-Connes conjecture for certain Levi-decomposable linear algebraic groups over local function fields. One of these is the Jacobi group, which is the semidirect product of the symplectic group and the Heisenberg group.

24Weakly Commensurable S-arithmetic Subgroups In Almost Simple Algebraic Groups Of Types B And C

By

Let G and G' be absolutely almost simple algebraic groups of types B and C respectively, of rank at least 3, and defined over a number field K. We determine when G and G' have the same isomorphism or isogeny classes of maximal K-tori. This leads to the necessary and sufficient conditions for two Zariski-dense S-arithmetic subgroups of G and G' to be weakly commensurable.

29Motivic Equivalence Of Algebraic Groups

By

Two semisimple algebraic groups of the same type are said to be motivic equivalent if the motives of the associated projective homogeneous varieties of the same type are isomorphic. We give general criteria of motivic equivalence in terms of the so-called higher Tits p-indices of algebraic groups. These results allow to give a complete classification of absolutely simple classical groups up to motivic equivalence in terms of the underlying algebraic structures. Among other applications of this classification, we deduce that there is a bijection between the stable birational equivalence classes of Severi-Brauer varieties of fixed dimension and the motivic equivalence classes of projective linear groups of the same rank.

30Complete Reducibility Of Subgroups Of Reductive Algebraic Groups Over Nonperfect Fields 3

By

Let $k$ be a nonperfect separably closed field. Let $G$ be a (possibly non-connected) reductive group defined over $k$. We study rationality problems for Serre's notion of complete reducibility of subgroups of $G$. In our previous work, we constructed examples of subgroups $H$ of $G$ that are $G$-completely reducible but not $G$-completely reducible over $k$ (and vice versa). In this paper, we give a theoretical underpinning of those constructions. To illustrate our result, we present a new such example in a non-connected reductive group of type $D_4$ in characteristic $2$. Then using Geometric Invariant Theory, we generalize the theoretical result above obtaining a new result on the structure of $G(k)$-(and $G$-) orbits in an arbitrary affine $G$-variety. We translate our result into the language of spherical buildings to give a new topological view. A problem on centralizers of completely reducible subgroups and a problem concerning the number of conjugacy classes are also considered.

32Higher Tits Indices Of Algebraic Groups

By

Let G be a semisimple algebraic group over a field k. We introduce the higher Tits indices of G as the set of all Tits indices of G over all field extensions K/k. In the context of quadratic forms this notion coincides with the notion of the higher Witt indices introduced by M. Knebusch and classified by N. Karpenko and A. Vishik. We classify the higher Tits indices for exceptional algebraic groups. Our main tools involve the Chow groups and the Chow motives of projective homogeneous varieties, Steenrod operations, and the notion of the J-invariant of algebraic groups.

33Algebraic And Differential Generic Galois Groups For Q-difference Equations, Followed By The Appendix "The Galois D-groupoid Of A Q-difference System" By Anne Granier

By

We give a complete answer to the analogue of Grothendieck conjecture on p-curvatures for q-difference equations defined over K(x), where K is any finitely generated extension of Q and q\in K can be either a transcendental or an algebraic number. This generalizes the results in [DV02], proved under the assumption that K is a number field and q an algebraic number. The results also hold for a field K which is a finite extension of a purely transcendental extension k(q) of a perfect field k. If k is a number field and q is a parameter, one can either reduce the equation modulo a finite place of k or specialize the parameter q, or both. In particular for q=1, we obtain a differential equation defined over a number field or in positive characteristic. In \S II, we consider two Galois groups attached to a q-difference module M over K(x): the generic Galois group Gal(M), in the sense of [Kat82]; if char K=0, the generic differential Galois group Gal^D(M), which is a Kolchin differential algebraic group. We deduce an arithmetic description of Gal(M) (resp. Gal^D(M)). In positive characteristic, we prove some devissage. There are many Galois theories for q-difference equations defined over fields such as C, the elliptic functions, or the differential closure of C. In \S III, we show that the Galois D-groupoid [Gra09] of a nonlinear q-difference system generalizes Gal^D(M). In \S IV we give some comparison results between the two generic Galois groups above and the other Galois groups for linear $q$-difference equations in the literature. We compare: the group introduced in [HS08] with the Gal^D(M) and hence with the Galois D-groupoid (cf [Mal09]); Gal(M) and Gal^D(M) to the generic Galois groups of the modules obtained by specialization of q or by reduction in positive characteristic. We relate the dimension of Gal^D(M) to the differential relations among the solutions of M.

35Irreducible Components In An Algebraic Variety Of Representations Of A Family Of One-relator Groups

By

Given a finitely generated group G, the set Hom(G,SL_2 C) inherits the structure of an algebraic variety R(G)called the "representation variety" of G. This algebraic variety is an invariant of G. Let G_{pt}= < a, b; a^p= b^t>, where p, t are integers greater than one. In this paper a formula is produced yielding the number of four dimensional irreducible components of the affine algebraic variety R(G_{pt}). A direct consequence of the main theorem of this paper is that if K is a torus knot, then its genus equals the number of four dimensional components of R(G_{pt}) corresponding to its knot group G_{pt}.

36Difference Subgroups Of Commutative Algebraic Groups Over Finite Fields

By

The work of Chatzidakis and Hrushovski on the model theory of difference fields in characteristic zero showed that groups defined by difference equations have a very restricted structure. Recent work of Chatzidakis, Hrushovski and Peterzil [CHP] extends the class of difference fields for which this sort of result is known to positive characteristic. In this note, we analyze the subgroups of the torsion points of simple commutative algebraic groups over finite fields that can be constructed by such difference equations. Our results are reasonably complete modulo some well-known conjectures in Number Theory. In one case, we need the $p$-adic version of the four exponentials conjecture and in another we need a version of Artin's conjecture on primitive roots. We recover part of a theorem of Boxall on the intersection of varieties with the group of $m$-power torsion points, but in general this theorem does not follow from the model-theoretic analysis, because there may be no field automorphism $\sigma$ so that the $m$-power torsion group is contained in a modular group definable with $\sigma$. On the other hand, some of the groups defined by modular difference equations are much larger than the group of $m$-power torsion points, so our results are stronger in another direction. In some ways, the model theoretic approach extends the approach of Bogomolov and the original one of Lang.

40An Algebraic Description Of The Exceptional Isogenies To Orthogonal Groups

By

We show how the exceptional isogenies of classical groups to orthogonal groups of quadratic spaces of dimensions up to 8 over fields of characteristic different from 2 may be obtained by explicit algebraic constructions using the Cartan--Dieudonn\'{e} Theorem. This gives a unified approach to groups arising from quaternion algebras, bi-quaternion algebras, and matrices over bi-quaternion algebras. The latter seem to yield new isogenies, which are related to triality in the hyperbolic case.

41Indecomposability For Differential Algebraic Groups

By

We study a notion of indecomposability in differential algebraic groups. Then several examples are given and basic propositions are established. We compare this notion to other notions of indecomposability from both model theory and differential algebra. We prove an indecomposability theorem for differential algebraic groups. This theorem is used for various definability results. For instance, we show every nonabelian almost simple differential algebraic group is perfect, answering a question of Cassidy and Singer.

42Classification Of Upper Motives Of Algebraic Groups Of Inner Type A_n

Let A, A' be two central simple algebras over a field F and \mathbb{F} be a finite field of characteristic p. We prove that the upper indecomposable direct summands of the motives of two anisotropic varieties of flags of right ideals X(d_1,...,d_k;A) and X(d'_1,...,d'_s;A') with coefficients in \mathbb{F} are isomorphic if and only if the p-adic valuations of gcd(d_1,...,d_k) and gcd(d'_1,..,d'_s) are equal and the classes of the p-primary components A_p and A'_p of A and A' generate the same group in the Brauer group of F. This result leads to a surprising dichotomy between upper motives of absolutely simple adjoint algebraic groups of inner type A_n

43Algebraic And Differential Star Products On Regular Orbits Of Compact Lie Groups

By

In this paper we study a family of algebraic deformations of regular coadjoint orbits of compact semisimple Lie groups with the Kirillov Poisson bracket. The deformations are restrictions of deformations on the dual of the Lie algebra. We prove that there are non isomorphic deformations in the family. The star products are not differential, unlike the star products considered in other approaches. We make a comparison with the differential star product canonically defined by Kontsevich's map.

44Volume-preserving Actions Of Simple Algebraic Q-groups On Low-dimensional Manifolds

We prove that SL(n,Q) has no nontrivial, C-infinity, volume-preserving action on any compact manifold of dimension strictly less than n. More generally, suppose G is a connected, isotropic, almost-simple algebraic group over Q, such that the simple factors of every localization of G have rank at least two. If there does not exist a nontrivial homomorphism from G(R) to GL(d,C), then every C-infinity, volume-preserving action of G(Q) on any compact d-dimensional manifold must factor through a finite group.

45Equivariant Stable Homotopy Methods In The Algebraic K-theory Of Infinite Groups

By

Equivariant homotopy methods developed over the last 20 years lead to recent breakthroughs in the Borel isomorphism conjectures for Loday assembly maps in K- and L-theories. An important consequence of these algebraic conjectures is the topological rigidity of compact aspherical manifolds. Our goal is to strip the basic idea to the core and follow the evolution over time in order to explain the advantages of the flexible state that exists today. We end with an outline of the proof of the Borel conjecture in algebraic K-theory for groups of finite asymptotic dimension. We also discuss the relation of these methods to the recent work on the Farrell-Jones conjecture.

46The Poisson Geometry Of The Conjugation Quotient Map For Simple Algebraic Groups And Deformed Poisson W-algebras

By

We define Poisson structures on certain transversal slices to conjugacy classes in complex simple algebraic groups introduced in arXiv:0809.0205. These slices are associated to the elements of the Weyl group, and the Poisson structures on them are analogous to the Poisson structures introduced by J. de Boer, T. Tjin and A. Premet in papers arXiv:hep-th/9211109 and http://www.maths.man.ac.uk/DeptWeb/Homepages/aap/Reprints/Transverse.ps on the Slodowy slices in complex simple Lie algebras. The quantum deformations of these Poisson structures are known as W-algebras of finite type. As an application of our definition we obtain some new Poisson structures on the coordinate rings of simple Kleinian singularities.

47Algebraic Functional Equations And Completely Faithful Selmer Groups

By

Let $E$ be an elliptic curve---defined over a number field $K$---without complex multiplication and with good ordinary reduction at all the primes above a rational prime $p \geq 5$. We construct a pairing on the dual $p^\infty$-Selmer group of $E$ over any strongly admissible $p$-adic Lie extension $K_\infty/K$ under the assumption that it is a torsion module over the Iwasawa algebra of the Galois group $G=\operatorname{Gal}(K_\infty/K)$. Under some mild additional hypotheses this gives an algebraic functional equation of the conjectured $p$-adic L-function. As an application we construct completely faithful Selmer groups in case the $p$-adic Lie extension is obtained by adjoining the $p$-power division points of another non-CM elliptic curve $A$.

48Embeddings Of Rank-2 Tori In Algebraic Groups

By

Let $k$ be a field of characteristic different from $2$ and $3$. In this paper we study connected simple algebraic groups of type $A_2$, $G_2$ and $F_4$ defined over $k$, via their rank-$2$ $k$-tori. Simple, simply connected groups of type $A_2$ play a pivotal role in the study of exceptional groups and this aspect is brought out by the results in this paper. We refer to tori, which are maximal tori of $A_n$ type groups, as unitary tori. We discuss conditions necessary for a rank-$2$ unitary $k$-torus to embed in simple $k$-groups of type $A_2$, $G_2$ and $F_4$ in terms of the mod-$2$ Galois cohomological invariants attached with these groups. We calculate the number of rank-$2$ $k$-unitary tori generating these algebraic groups (in fact exhibit such tori explicitly). The results in this paper and our earlier work (Invariants mod-2 and subgroups of G_2 and F_4, J. Alg. 411 (2014) 312- 336) show that the mod-$2$ invariants of groups of type $G_2,F_4$ and $A_2$ are controlled by their $k$-subgroups of type $A_1$ and $A_2$ as well as the unitary $k$-tori embedded in them.

49Characterisations Of Algebraic Properties Of Groups In Terms Of Harmonic Functions

By

We prove various results connecting structural or algebraic properties of graphs and groups to conditions on their spaces of harmonic functions. In particular: we show that a group with a finitely supported symmetric measure has a finite-dimensional space of harmonic functions if and only if it is virtually cyclic; we present a new proof of a result of V. Trofimov that an infinite vertex-transitive graph admits a non-constant harmonic function; we give a new proof of a result of T. Ceccherini-Silberstein, M. Coornaert and J. Dodziuk that the Laplacian on an infinite, connected, locally finite graph is surjective; and we show that the positive harmonic functions on a non-virtually nilpotent linear group span an infinite-dimensional space.

50Monochromatic Generating Sets In Groups And Other Algebraic Structures

By

The \emph{generating chromatic number} of a group $G$, $\chigen(G)$, is the maximum number of colors $k$ such that there is a monochromatic generating set for each coloring of the elements of $G$ in $k$ colors. If no such maximal $k$ exists, we set $\chigen(G)=\infty$. Equivalently, $\chigen(G)$ is the maximal number $k$ such that there is no cover of $G$ by proper subgroups ($\infty$ if there is no such maximal $k$). We provide characterizations, for arbitrary gruops, in the cases $\chigen(G)=\infty$ and $\chigen(G)=2$. For nilpotent groups (in particular, for abelian ones), all possible chromatic numbers are characterized. Examples show that the characterization for nilpotent groups do not generalize to arbitrary solvable groups. We conclude with applications to vector spaces and fields.
