Alexithymia is a personality trait characterized by difficulties recognizing and attending to one’s own emotional experiences. It is also associated with difficulties recognizing others’ affective experiences, including poorer recognition of others’ emotional facial expressions (Grynberg et al., 2012) and impaired Theory of Mind, particularly in situations requiring emotion recognition (Pisani et al., 2021). Some researchers have gone so far as to label alexithymia as a trans-diagnostic precursor to empathic abnormality and have called for a greater understanding of the ways in which alexithymia contributes to empathic deficits (Valdespino, Antezana, Ghane, & Richey, 2017). However, much remains unknown about the mechanisms by which alexithymia may contribute to reduced recognition of others’ affective experiences.
