World AIDS Day is held on the 1st day of December each year, and it is an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, show their support for people living with HIV, and to commemorate people who have died. World AIDS Day was the first-ever global health day, held for the first time in 1988.Being diagnosed with HIV today means something very different than it did 20 or 30 years ago. HIV is no longer a death sentence. However, people's attitudes can make living with HIV really difficult.Some things from the 1980s and 1990s are worth revisiting, but HIV stigma isn't one of them. Patients who have a serious illness for which death is unavoidable and who have been medically diagnosed with a survival expectancy of no more than six months are considered end-of-life patients. As the disease progresses toward the end of life, patients and their families are involved in numerous decision-making points in the diagnosis and treatment process. Lack of information and anticipated regret make patients ill-prepared for decision-making, and the family members who make the majority of the decisions frequently experience extreme psychological pressure as a result of inadequate information or lack of preparation, making patients and their families vulnerable to making poor decisions.-making conflicts or decision-making dilemmas when presented with a range of diagnosis and treatment options, each of which has pros and cons. The treatment plan developed in this scenario is not always able to represent the patient's preferences, which has an impact on the patient's quality of life. According to studies, less than half of patients believe that their preferences are reflected in the therapy they receive, indicating a very low degree of patient participation in decision-making. Through manuals, videos, and other materials, decision aids (DAs) give patients structured, evidence-based information to help them make medical decisions. They also clearly outline the benefits and risks of each option, assist patients in identifying risks, and help them fully understand their own values so that they can create the most consistent medical plan for their preferences. As a result, DA can assist patients in taking an active role in medical decision-making, which can enhance the quality of the decision-making process and result in treatment plans that align with the patients' beliefs and lifestyles. This can also successfully improve the patients' quality of life and treatment compliance. The description of these tools in terms of content elements, behavior modification approaches, and intervention outcomes is still unclear, despite the fact that researchers both domestically and internationally have produced many types of DA in recent years and used them with patients nearing the end of their lives. In order to provide a reference for the development of decision support tools (DA) applied to end-of-life patients in accordance with Chinese culture and values, this study adhered to the scoping review guidelines' methodological framework to systematically understand the content elements, intervention techniques, and effects of DA applied to end-of-life patients.

AZT (azidothymidine; generic name: zidovudine; trade name: Retrovir) set a new direction for research on drug treatments for HIV infection and AIDS in the late 1980s and early 1990s. It was the first antiretroviral to gain FDA approval. It was at the center of debates on the use of placebos in clinical trials of AIDS drugs. Discussions surrounding AZT led to formal codification of rules governing patient access to experimental drugs. From 1987 to 1994 AZT was the subject of numerous clinical trials, and remained the first-line drug in treatment of HIV infection even as doubts about its therapeutic value increased. In this talk historian John Lesch will briefly survey AZT’s research origins, its role in expanding patient access to experimental drugs, and its trajectory as monotherapy. He will conclude by suggesting ways in which the AZT story highlights more general features of drug development in the early AIDS epidemic. John Lesch  is a historian of science and medicine, with a special interest in pharmaceuticals and the connections between academic, government, and industrial research. His publications include  The First Miracle Drugs: How the Sulfa Drugs Transformed Medicine.  He is professor emeritus of history, University of California, Berkeley.

Situated in a residential neighborhood in Maple Grove is Bluebird House, a home operated by nonprofit Homeward Bound. "It's a home just like yours and mine that's made handicap accessible," said Lori Merriam, director of development for Homeward Bound. It's home to 37-year-old Danny Schmitt and three other men with disabilities. "Danny is a young man with special needs, " said Diane Schmitt, Danny's mother. "He was born with cerebral palsy, and has a lot of respiratory issues." Diane put him in the home three years ago to ensure he gets the care he needs. "He used to have a couple hospital stays a year due to respiratory issues, and I don't think he's had a hospital stay now for a couple of years," Diane said. "So it's been wonderful." While she says it's been wonderful, the house is far from perfect. "A little bit bigger space would certainly be helpful, for all of the guys here," she said. She'll soon get her wish. Volunteers, donations pay off Thursday morning, ground was broken on a charitable remodeling project that will provide more space for the men who live at Bluebird House and their caretakers. "We're adding a large family room space, that can accommodate all of them at the same time if they want to gather together," Merriam said. "It will accommodate their family and friends and our staff and all the equipment that's needed. As well, we're adding a second bathroom. The entire project will cost $225,000, but the bulk of that cost is being paid for by donations and volunteer efforts. "Having met the gentlemen who live here, and spending some time with them, knowing how this is going to impact them and their families, you know, it's hard not to get excited about it," said Ed Roskowinski, general manager of Vujovich Design Build. It's a labor of love that means a great deal to the people who will benefit most. "It's wonderful," said Diane Schmitt. "I could just cry it's so wonderful." Construction will begin Aug. 10 and the project should be complete by the end of the year.
