In the task-switching paradigm, participants are required to alternate between two or more tasks according to a predefined set of rules. For example, they switch between categorizing objects as smaller or larger than a shoebox and categorizing objects as natural vs. manmade. Switching between tasks demands reconfiguration of the task set, leading to what is known as a "switch cost", typically observed as slower response times and higher error rates on switch trials compared to repeat trials. The list-wide switch proportion (LWSP) manipulation involves changing the proportion of switch (relative to repeat) trials in mixed task blocks (Dreisbach & Haider, 2006). Researchers create high switch lists (e.g., 70% switch trials, 30% repeat trials) and low switch lists (e.g., 30% switch trials, 70% repeat trials). The switch cost is reduced in the high switch lists compared with the low switch lists, which is known as the LWSP effect. This effect has been found for inducer (i.e., switch proportion biased) and diagnostic (i.e., switch proportion unbiased) items (Kang & Chiu, 2021; Siqi-Liu & Egner, 2020) with younger adults. In the present study, we aim to investigate the influence of aging on the LWSP effect. We predict that the LWSP effect for diagnostic items will be disrupted with aging, while the LWSP effect for inducer items will stay intact.

Pre-registration of hypothesis that people living in areas with high indices of multiple deprivation are more impulsive than people living in areas with low indices of multiple deprivation. In short poverty is an environmental antecedent of impulsive choice behaviour after controlling for other known correlates of impulsivity. The data is drawn from Wave 5 of the English Longitudinal Study on Ageing.

Previous research has demonstrated a close connection between the experience of stress – defined as the perception of a situation as threatening and the simultaneous belief not having enough resources to manage the situation (Folkman, 2013) – and epigenetic modifications. These epigenetic modifications can contribute to the pathophysiology of psychological disorders or other stress-related characteristics (e.g., Yuan et al., 2023). Specific epigenetic modification processes were found to be associated with aging This so-called epigenetic aging is evident in developmental contexts and reflects not only genetically driven maturation but also how environmental factors, particularly early life stressors, can influence the pace of aging (Gems et al., 2024). Individuals can be exposed to significant stressors, such as violence, poor nutrition, or adverse life experiences like school pressure which can impact their maturation pace in response to these perceived challenges (Ellis & Del Giudice, 2019; Kuzawa & Bragg, 2012). As a result, accelerated epigenetic aging can be linked to high stress levels (Mak et al., 2023). Since epigenetic aging is influenced by both genetic and environmental factors and individuals show differences in the genetic sensitivity to stress (Kendler et al., 1995), it is important to consider the genetic contribution to the associations between stress and epigenetic aging (Boyce et al., 2020). As previous research suggests impact of stress on epigenetic aging, we investigate the associations between different measures of epigenetic aging and various stress-related characteristics and experiences within an exploratory study. This investigation will utilize data from the German TwinLife study and its associated TwinLife Epigenetic Change Satellite (TECS) project (Hahn et al., 2016; Mönkediek et al., 2019; Rohm et al., 2023). The twin design allows us to consider the genetic contributions.

Work-related stress is known to alter biological pathways and to be associated with cardiovascular diseases. Furthermore, such stress-related conditions as well as occupational characteristics can lead to epigenetic age acceleration (EAA), calculated from epigenetic clocks serving as a biological proxy for age. Moreover, second-generation clocks are regarded as risk estimators for both morbidity and mortality factors, while epigenetic age acceleration has been associated with mental disorders like depression. In the current study, we investigate the mediating role of epigenetic aging parameters in the form of DNA methylation based epigenetic aging and age acceleration / deceleration from first and second generation clocks (DNAm Age "Skin & Blood"; DNAm PhenoAge, DNAm GrimAge 1 and DNAm GrimAge 2) on the relationship between subjective or objective stress markers and burnout or depressive symptoms. The current research should help to understand alterations in molecular mechanisms due to stress and its effect on mental health related outcomes.
