This is a randomised experimental study in healthy female volunteers, 18 to 35 years of age. The study investigates whether a form of guided meditation—yoga nidra (relative to a music listening control condition) —can effectively modulate both physiological arousal shortly after an analogue trauma and the characteristics of intrusive memories in the near (during the same laboratory session) and ‘long-term’ (7 days) after an analogue trauma. The study will also explore differences in state mindfulness and mood following the relaxation (yoga nidra or music) period and in response to a film-related word-viewing task following the relaxation period as potential mediators of the impact of group on intrusive memory characteristics. In addition, we will investigate between-group differences in attentional bias to analogue trauma-related stimuli during the word-viewing task. Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is characterized by four symptom clusters after trauma exposure: reexperiencing symptoms, negative cognitions and mood, avoidance of internal or external trauma reminders, and alterations in arousal and reactivity (American Psychiatric Association, 2022). Intrusive memories and hyperarousal are thus two core components of PTSD symptomatology (Brewin, 2015; Weston, 2014). In this study, we aim to focus on these symptom clusters as we test yoga nidra meditation as an early intervention after trauma, using a simulated trauma (trauma film) in order to study the impact of yoga nidra instructions on stressor-induced arousal and the development and maintenance of intrusive memories. Disordered sleep is also a critical component of PTSD symptomology (Spoormaker & Montgomery, 2008) and a risk factor for the development of psychiatric disorders, including PTSD, following trauma (Bryant et al, 2010; Gehrman et al., 2013; Mellman et al., 1995; Nguyen et al., 2023; van Liempt et al., 2013). Findings indicate that the relationship between PTSD symptoms and disturbed sleep is bidirectional, with shorter sleep duration and poorer sleep quality predicting increased next-day PTSD symptoms and increased PTSD symptoms predicting increased nightmares and worse sleep quality the following night (Slavish et al., 2022). Three recent meta-analyses of analogue trauma studies found that sleep, compared to wake, after analogue trauma exposure may reduce the number of intrusive memories, suggesting therapeutic effects of sleep after trauma exposure (Davidson & Marcusson-Clavertz, 2023; Larson et al., 2023; Schäfer et al., 2023). In this study, we therefore also aim to test the relationship between sleep characteristics prior to analogue trauma and the development of intrusive memories and their characteristics, as well as physiological arousal in response to trauma. Additionally, we aim to test the effects of yoga nidra on sleep following the analogue trauma. Yoga nidra is a form of guided meditation intended to regulate arousal; it involves formulating an intention, as well as awareness of the body, the breath, predominating emotions and their opposites, and thoughts (Miller, 2015; Pandi-Perumal et al., 2022). Previous studies have found that yoga nidra reduces symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (Pence et al., 2014; Stankovic, 2011), generalized stress (Eastman-Mueller et al., 2013; Moszeik et al., 2022; Pritchard et al., 2010), insomnia (Datta et al., 2017; Datta et al., 2021), and depression (Eastman-Mueller et al., 2013; Kim, 2017; Pence et al., 2014; Stankovic, 2011). Yoga nidra practice has also been found to increase total sleep time (Datta et al., 2021; Gutman et al., 2017) and, in patients with chronic insomnia, was found to increase subjective sleep efficiency and sleep quality and decrease subjective wake after sleep onset, sleep onset latency, and insomnia symptoms (Datta et al., 2021). However, many of these studies have had small sample sizes, and the studies testing the impact of yoga nidra on PTSD lacked an active control group. Research suggests that meditation and mindfulness-based interventions may decrease physiological arousal (Pascoe et al., 2017) and increase mindfulness (Galante et al., 2014; Nyklíček & Kuijpers, 2008) in healthy participants. As increased arousal after trauma and lower trait mindfulness have both been found to predict greater likelihood of development of posttraumatic stress symptoms or PTSD (Hinrichs et al., 2019; Kubota & Nixon, 2020; O’Donnell et al., 2007; Shalev et al., 1998), we hypothesize that relaxation-promoting mindful meditation interventions such as yoga nidra, when administered shortly after (analogue) trauma, may decrease the likelihood of symptom development. To control for the effects of expectancy and other non-specific influences, yoga nidra will be compared to an active control, an instrumental music listening condition. The experiment will be advertised as a study on the effects of “relaxing activities.” Multiple studies have found reductions in stress responses, or faster stress response recovery, and reduced negative affect following relaxing music listening (e.g., de la Torre-Luque et al., 2017; Khalfa et al., 2006; Thoma et al., 2013). We are unaware of previously published studies using yoga nidra after experimentally induced stress, though yoga nidra has previously been found to be noninferior compared to relaxing music listening for perceptions of pain, patient satisfaction, and patient willingness to report a procedure when used during a colonoscopy (Li et al., 2019). Compared to relaxing music, yoga nidra has been found to lead to statistically significantly greater improvements in depression, anxiety, and insomnia (Gunjiganvi et al., 2023). This study aims to expand these findings and investigate the effects of the use of yoga nidra meditation, compared to a common, ecologically realistic and credible relaxing activity—music listening—after an analogue trauma. We will examine multiple subjective and physiological measures to examine differences between groups in these measures and their status as predictors of reductions in intrusive memories.

Prolonged exposure to sounds at high levels causes temporary auditory shifts: reductions in outer-hair-cell function and elevations in audiometric thresholds that typically return to baseline in the hours or days following exposure. The degree of auditory shift is variable, seemingly depending not only on level and duration of exposure but other factors. One factor may be the degree of long-term "conditioning" noise exposure experienced by the individual, which may "toughen up" their ears and reduce the extent of temporary auditory shift. The ATM study measures temporary auditory shifts immediately following exposure to amplified music, and tests for relations with a range of potential predictor variables. The main outcome variable is shift in pure-tone audiometric (PTA) thresholds and the main predictor variable is total energy of "conditioning" noise exposure over the past 10 weeks. Alternative outcome variables are shifts in distortion-product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE) amplitude, extended high-frequency (EHF) audiometric thresholds, and presence/loudness of tinnitus. Alternative predictor variables are sex, skin tone, and alternative metrics of “conditioning” noise exposure. To aid brevity and clarity, we have attached a table, "Table of variables", to the "Design Plan" page of this registration. This summarises all study variables, incorporating abbreviations, descriptions, calculations, and units. The abbreviations defined in this table will be used throughout the present protocol.

Kicked out before the first band played: Bizarre video shows festival-goer at T in the Park rolling around 'after taking drugs' - and the music hadn't even started Footage shows young man rocking backwards and forwards on the floor He was apparently under influence of drugs when rolling around at festival Video was apparently taken at T in the Park festival in Perthshire last night He was allegedly kicked out of festival site before music had even started This is the bizarre moment a festival-goer was seen rolling around on the floor after allegedly taking drugs causing him to apparently be kicked out of the event before the music had even started. The man, who was said to be under the influence of drugs, was seen throwing his legs in the air while rolling around on the floor at the T in the Park festival site at Strathallan Castle in Perthshire. It is claimed the footage was recorded last night after thousands of revellers arrived at the festival ground to set up camp ahead of the three-day music event which officially begins today. Kasabian, The Libertines, Sam Smith, Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds, Rudimental and George Ezra are among those to headline this year's festival. The video was uploaded to a Facebook page called 'Being oot yer nut at T in the Park' (sic) and shows the young man - dressed in a sleeveless vest and shorts - stumbling around and falling on top of a tent. He is then watched by medics, security guards and a crowd of other revellers as he rocks backwards and forwards while lying on the floor. RELATED ARTICLES At one point he goes into a bizarre gym routine, pushing up his legs and rolling around before flattening a tent. He is eventually dragged off the tent and pinned to the ground by a man who straddles him. A security guard then moves in to stop the filming. The clip was uploaded to social media last night - after apparently being taken at about 7.30pm - with one person commenting to allege the man had taken drugs. Another comments that the man had spent £300 on his ticket, £30 on a bus, £50 for a tent and £80 on new clothes - only to be kicked out before the first band took to the stage. He described the waste of £460 as 'priceless'. The video, if genuine, is likely to raise concerns about the extent of drug use at T in the Park, where sniffer dogs have been brought in to try to combat illegal substances. Tens of thousands of music lovers are attending the three-day event, which is being held for the first time at its new venue in Strathallan, Perthshire. Representatives of T in the Park today said they were aware of the video but could not confirm that it was taken at the festival. The spokesman said organisers had spoken with police, who had no record of the incident taking place last night.
