22. Engineering Energy Quality Improvement Using An Advanced Control Strategy Based On Transformerless Shunt Hybrid Power Filter

A Shunt Hybrid Active Power Filter (SHAPF) is proposed in this paper in order to enhance the power quality and compensate reactive power required by nonlinear load. The advanced control algorithm applied to the SHAPF in based on a Multi-Variable Filters (MFV) combined with a robust PLL to determine the reference current. The SHAPF is formed by a single 7 th tuned LC filter per phase and a small-rated three-phase active filter, which are directly connected in series without any matching transformer. Proposed topology provides significant inverter power rating reduction.The required rating of the active filter is much smaller than that of a conventional standalone active filter be. All simulations are performed by using Matlab-Simulink Power System Blockset and validated with an experimental test bench developed in the LIAS laboratory, University of Poitiers. Various simulation and experimental results of the proposed control algorithm are presented under steady state and transient conditions to confirm his validity and effectiveness

This report results from a contract tasking Universidad Publica de Navarra as follows: The project includes the following topics: (1) Study of the State of the Art on QFT automatic loop-shaping; (2) Analysis of the classical theorems that define the control limitations on performance in SISO systems; (3) Synthesis of the main characteristics of an experienced loop-shaping controller design; (4) From the model uncertainty and the performance and stability specifications, definition of the bound restrictions as quadratic inequalities; (5) Selection of an optimum searching algorithm; (6) Design of the new automatic loop-shaping methodology to design QFT controllers; and (7) Validation with several demanding examples. OUTPUTS: (1) Technical Note TN1 that presents the new automatic loop-shaping QFT methodology, including the new theory developed and the validation cases. (2) Matlab modules and scripts.

8DTIC ADA163003: The Science Of And Advanced Technology For Cost-Effective Manufacture Of High Precision Engineering Products. Volume 3. Geometric Adaptive Control For Accuracy And Stability In Machining Cylindrical Workpiece.

A new geometric adaptive control (GAC) system has been developed for improving the accuracy and stability in machining cylindrical workpiece. The system takes into consideration error generation process, machine tool dynamics, and metrology. The new stochastic model constructed in this thesis provides not only insight into the nature of machining processes, but also a means for the systematic design of geometric adaptive controllers. The adaptive control algorithms for the GAC system are derived by using the theory of self-tuning control (STC). The algorithms are simple, robust, and suitable for microprocessor implementation. Whitehouse's multiprobe measurement is modified for use in the control system for the first time. Interesting properties of this measurement in control are analyzed and predicted. The results of simulation show that the GAC system can improve both the accuracy and the stability considerably. Through the theoretical analysis it was possible to resolve the control problems imposed by multiprobe measurement, and to achieve near optimum control performance. A comparison with another GAC system which uses FCC technique is made to show that the proposed GAC system does have better performance than other existing GAC systems in precision machining. 9DTIC AD0910262: Engineering Evaluation, AH-56A Compound Helicopter With Advanced Mechanical Control System

The United States Army Aviation Systems Test Activity conducted an engineering evaluation of the AH-56A compound helicopter with the advanced mechanical control system. This evaluation was primarily a handling qualities evaluation to determine the relative merits of the advanced mechanical control system versus the improved control system previously tested. The testing consisted of 20 test flights totaling 18.2 hours. The advanced mechanical control system corrected the major problem of the AH-56A with the improved control system. This problem was loss of aircraft control within the flight envelope resulting from blade moment stall. Some additional benefits of the advanced mechanical control system were a reduction in pilot workload during transition and elimination of the tendency for pilot-coupled roll oscillations, longitudinal trim shift with sideslip, and roll due to lift coupling. One deficiency identified during improved control system testing is still present. This deficiency is the inability to effectively perform low-speed low-level mission tasks below 120 knots calibrated airspeed under reduced visibility conditions due to the lateral-directional stability characteristics. There were four shortcomings identified, all of which existed with the improved control system.

Composite structures technology is applied in a preliminary design study of advanced technology blades and hubs for the XV-15 tilt rotor research demonstrator aircraft. Significant improvements in XV-15 hover and cruise performance are available using blades designed for compatibility with the existing aircraft, i.e., blade installation would not require modification of the airframe, hub or upper controls. Provision of a low risk nonmechanical control system was also studied, and a development specification is given.
