4A Comparison Of Two Frequency Domain Adaptive Beamforming Algorithms For Sonar Signal Processing
By Nikitakos, Nikitas V.
Computer simulation studies of two frequency domain adaptive beamforming algorithms are presented. The two algorithms are the frequency domain adaptive beamforming modified least-mean-square algorithm, and the proposed new frequency domain adaptive beamforming algorithm based on modified adaptive linear prediction-error filtering. The simulation studies were conducted to determine the multiple broadband target localization capability and the full angular coverage capability of the two algorithms. The number of iterations that the adaptive algorithms took to reach a minimum estimation error was determined. The algorithms were evaluated at several signal-to-noise ratios. Finally, using the results of the simulation studies a comparison between the two algorithms is performed. (RH)

5DTIC ADA572986: High Frequency Acoustic Propagation In Littoral And Surf Zone Environment: The Analysis Of Temporal Fluctuations And Development Of Adaptive Signal Processing Algorithms
By Defense Technical Information Center
There are three long term goals of this work. The first is to the characterize features of high frequency acoustic propagation in shallow water that are relevant to the performance and design of acoustic communications systems. The second is to develop closed form expressions for the performance of channel identification and acoustic communications algorithms as a function of environmental conditions. The final goal is to develop improved channel estimation and demodulation algorithms for phase coherent acoustic communications in this environment.

7DTIC ADA452710: A Class Of Square Root And Division Free Algorithms And Architectures For QRD-Based Adaptive Signal Processing
By Defense Technical Information Center
The least squares (LS) minimization problem constitutes the core of many real-time signal processing problems, such as adaptive filtering, system identification and adaptive beamforming. Recently efficient implementations of the recursive least squares (RLS) algorithm and the constrained recursive least squares (CRLS) algorithm based on the numerically stable QR decomposition (QRD) have been of great interest. Several papers have proposed modifications to the rotation algorithm that circumvent the square root operations and minimize the number of divisions that are involved in the Givens rotation. It has also been shown that all the known square root free algorithms are instances of one parametric algorithm. Recently, a square root free and division free algorithm has been proposed.

Award #2 Title: Exploiting Structured Dependencies In The Design Of Adaptive Algorithms For Underwater Communication. Award #3 Title: Coupled Research In Ocean Acoustics And Signal Processing For The Next Generation Of Underwater Acoustic Communication Systems
By Defense Technical Information Center
A high performance, versatile, and reliable underwater communications capability is of strategic importance to the U.S. Navy. Operational scenarios involving the use, monitoring, and coordination of multiple undersea assets, both manned and unmanned and mobile and fixed, are significantly enhanced by the ability to communicate quickly, reliably, in a wide range of environmental conditions, and with minimal constraints on the actions of the platforms involved. The long-term goal of the effort in underwater acoustic communications is to integrate research in the areas of physical oceanography, ocean acoustics, signal processing, and communications theory to 1. develop a underwater communications capability that can be deployed on and used by a wide range of platforms with minimal required external infrastructure and which achieves reliable and high performance under a wide range of environmental and operational conditions, and 2. develop an communications performance prediction capability that enables commanders to reliably predict the performance of deployed communications systems as a function of environmental conditions and the location, velocity, and capabilities of the deployed assets.
