Hyperlipidemia is increasingly posing a significant health risk worldwide, and often associated with hypertension, diabetes, and obesity. Statins are widely used medications for managing lipid levels in clinical settings. However, recent studies have found that relying solely on Western medicine has limitations, including prolonged treatment duration, susceptibility to drug resistance, and potential side effects. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has gained more recognition for its healing properties and potential for the future. Acupuncture and moxibustion have been demonstrated potential effectiveness in the treatment of hyperlipidemia, with reduced expenses and a lower incidence of severe adverse events. However, the findings from these studies have not shown complete consistency, and no pertinent meta-analysis is available. Therefore, we will conduct a meta-analysis to evaluate the efficacy and safety of acupuncture and moxibustion in treating hyperlipidemia, to provide evidence-based medical support for clinical treatment.

A scoping review

As an academic paper, one of the translation methods is characterized by symptoms such as cold and pain in the waist, a feeling of heaviness, and limited mobility, which are typical of damp-cold conditions. Intervention measures include the combined use of moxibustion and warm acupuncture. Warm acupuncture is a therapeutic method that supplements acupuncture with warm stimulation by placing mugwort on the needle handle and igniting it, using the warmth to enhance the therapeutic effect. Moxibustion is the process of burning mugwort on the skin or acupuncture points to achieve therapeutic purposes through warm stimulation. Both methods aim to dispel damp-cold, activate blood circulation, and relieve muscle tension, thereby alleviating pain and improving function. The research protocol for this systematic review and meta-analysis is designed to evaluate the clinical efficacy of warm acupuncture and moxibustion in treating lumbar disc herniation of damp-cold type, and to explore their impact on pain relief and improvement of lumbar function. The study will follow strict inclusion and exclusion criteria, retrieve relevant literature through electronic databases, and use standardized evaluation tools to assess the quality of the research. Data analysis will use appropriate statistical methods to combine results, providing higher quality evidence for clinical practice, assisting physicians and patients in making more reasonable treatment choices.

Primary dysmenorrhea (PDM) is one of the most prevalent gynecological disease in women of childbearing age. It refers to menstrual pain, often spasmodic, concentrated in the lower abdomen. Other symptoms include headache, dizziness, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, and low back pain. It is a very common condition in young women. PDM is not associated with obvious pelvic organic disease and has high socioeconomic impact. So far, the cause of PDM has not yet been elucidated. Among the guideline issued by the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada, the drugs currently used to treat PDM are acetaminophen, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or oral contraceptives and complementary replacement therapies. However, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or oral contraceptives may case adverse effects on the liver, digestive tract, and other metabolic organs. Due to these shortcomings, acupuncture and moxibustion are viable supplemental replacement therapy in China, Japan, the United States, and other regions. Year of application experience and widely used, especially in China, ongoing clinical trials have made acupuncture and moxibustion more and more accepted.

However, the findings from these studies have yet to show complete consistency, and no pertinent meta-analysis is available. This advantage is due to the essential properties of acupuncture and moxibustion. Acupuncture and moxibustion are helpful in treating somatoform disorders, especially musculoskeletal symptoms. In Japan, a holistic acupuncture and moxibustion therapy called Sawada-style has been developed. This is based on fundamental meridian points that are considered to have effects on central, autonomic nervous, immune, metabolic, and endocrine systems to regulate the whole body balance. In addition, some of the fundamental points have effects on Qi, blood, and water patterns associated with major depression, generalized anxiety disorder, eating disorders, and somatoform disorders. The fixed protocol of Sawada-style would be suitable for large-scale, randomized, controlled studies in the future. Recent systematic reviews indicate that electroacupuncture would be a useful addition to antidepressant therapy for some symptoms accompanying fibromyalgia. Acupuncture and moxibustion are also recommended for irritable bowel syndrome, instead of Western drug therapy. Surprisingly, the dorsal prefrontal cerebral cortex, which is associated with a method of scalp acupuncture applied for gastrointestinal disorders, has been found to be activated in patients with irritable bowel syndrome. It is quite possible that regulation of this cortical area is related to the effect of scalp acupuncture. This acupuncture method can be effective not only for irritable bowel syndrome but also for other stress-related gastrointestinal disorders.

A comprehensive systematic review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) including both English and Chinese databases was conducted to assess the efficacy of acupuncture and moxibustion in the treatment of LEP. Methods: Revised STRICTA (2010) criteria were used to appraise the acupuncture procedures, the Cochrane risk of bias tool was used to assess the methodological quality of the studies. A total of 19 RCTs that compared acupuncture and/or moxibustion with sham acupuncture, another form of acupuncture, or conventional treatment were included. Results: All studies had at least one domain rated as high risk or uncertain risk of bias in the Cochrane risk of bias tool. Results from three RCTs of moderate quality showed that acupuncture was more effective than sham acupuncture. Results from 10 RCTs of mostly low quality showed that acupuncture or moxibustion was superior or equal to conventional treatment, such as local anesthetic injection, local steroid injection, non-steroidal anti- inflammatory drugs, or ultrasound. There were six low quality RCTs that compared acupuncture and moxibustion combined with manual acupuncture alone, and all showed that acupuncture and moxibustion combined was superior to manual acupuncture alone. Conclusion: Moderate quality studies suggest that acupuncture is more effective than sham acupuncture. Interpretations of findings regarding acupuncture vs. conventional treatment, and acupuncture and moxibustion combined vs. manual acupuncture alone are limited by the methodological qualities of these studies. Future studies with improved methodological design are warranted to confirm the efficacy of acupuncture and moxibustion for LEP.

Abstract To examine the possible correlation of aberrant Wnt signaling and pathological changes in Alzheimer's disease, we established a rat model of Alzheimer's disease and measured axin and β-catenin expression in the hippocampus. Rats were pretreated with moxibustion or electroacupuncture, or both, at Baihui (GV20) and Shenshu (BL23). Axin expression was lower, β-catenin expression was greater, and neuronal cytoplasmic edema was visibly prevented in the rats that had received the pretreatments. Our results suggest that the mechanism underlying the neuroprotective effect of acupuncture and moxibustion in Alzheimer's disease is associated with axin and β-catenin expression in the Wnt signal transduction pathway.
