Bennett Has Earned The Reputation Among His Colleagues, Constituents, And Clients As A Pragmatic Problem-solver Who Seeks Creative And Commonsense Solutions To Their Issues. Robert F. Bennett Entered The Political Arena By Managing His Father's Senatorial Reelection Campaign 49 Years Ago, In 1962. Wallace F. Bennett Was A U.S. Senator From 1951 To 1974. It Was This Experience That Would Later Inspire Mr. Bennett To Seek Public Office. In The Meantime, He Used His Strong Leadership Skills And Lessons Learned From Working As A Staffer On Capitol Hill In Several Successful Entrepreneurial Pursuits. His Greatest Triumph In The Business World Came When He Was CEO Of Franklin International Institute, Now Known As Franklin Covey. Mr. Bennett Grew The Business From 4 Employees To More Than 1,000, And It Was Listed On The New York Stock Exchange. In 1992, Mr. Bennett Followed In His Father's Footsteps And Ran A Successful Campaign For The U.S. Senate, Carrying His Businessman-like Approach With Him To The Hill. He Served As A Senior Member Of The Senate Banking Committee And A Member Of The Distinguished Joint Economic Committee, Where He Was At The Center Of National Economic Policy Discussions. He Also Served As The Ranking Republican On The Senate Rules Committee. As A Member Of The Senate Appropriations Committee, Senator Bennett Strived To Balance Fiscal Discipline In Government While Representing The Needs Of His Constituents In The Distribution Of Federal Funds. He Also Represented The Interests Of The West As The Ranking Republican On The Senate Appropriations Subcommittee On Energy And Water And A Member Of The Senate Energy And Natural Resources Committee. Senator Bennett Was At The Forefront Of Health Care Reform. He Cosponsored The Healthy Americans Act, The First Major Bipartisan Health Care Legislation In More Than A Decade. His Healthy Americans Act Guaranteed Quality, Affordable, Portable Health Coverage For Every American, Cutting Health Costs By More Than .2 Trillion Over The Next Decade. Mr. Bennett Is A Graduate Of The University Of Utah, Where He Was Student Body President. He And His Wife Joyce Are The Proud Parents Of 6 Children And Have 20 Grandchildren. Farewell To The Senate Thursday, December 9, 2010 Mr. BENNETT. Madam President, There Once Was A Very Strong Tradition In The Senate That Every New Senator Gave A Maiden Speech, And In That Tradition Some Senators Waited As Long As A Year Before They Gave The Speech. Then, When The Time Came, The More Senior Senators Would Gather And Take Notes And Then Critique The Newcomer On How Well He Did. Life Has Changed A Good Deal. I Never Gave A Maiden Speech. I Plunged Right Into The Debate When I Got Here. Now The Tradition Seems To Be To Give A Farewell Speech. So I Am Grateful To My Colleagues Who Will Gather For This Occasion As I Contemplate Saying Farewell To The Senate. But I Will Warn Them, This Is Probably Not My Last Speech. I Intend To Be Heavily Involved In The Debate Over Whether We Pass A Continuing Resolution Or An Omnibus Bill. I Have A History With The Senate, And It Began When I Was A Teenager As A Summer Intern. I Remember Sitting In The Gallery And Watching Bob Taft Prowl Across The Back Of The Senate, Watching To Make Sure Things Were Going According To His Desire. He Had Been The Majority Leader. He Had Stepped Down From That Position Because Of The Cancer He Had Contracted, But He Was Still Paying Attention To This Body Where He Served With Such Distinction. Lyndon Johnson Was Sprawled Out With His Lanky Frame At The Democratic Leader's Desk, And I Was Watching From The Gallery, Thinking What An Extraordinary Place This Was. Ten Years Later, I Came Back As A Staffer, And I Served Here. I Was Sitting In My Cubicle In The Dirksen Building When Word Came That John F. Kennedy Had Been Shot In Dallas. We Didn't Know Whether He Was Dead. We All Rushed Over To The Senate, Where There Was A Ticker Tape Back In The Back Lobby, To See What Was Happening. I Rushed In With The Others To See What Was There And Then Looked To See Whom I Had Jostled Aside In Order To Get To See The Ticker Tape. It Was Mike Mansfield. I Quietly Withdrew, Realizing I Had Done Something That Was Not Appropriate On That Occasion. I Was Here In Washington When Martin Luther King Gave His ''I Have A Dream'' Speech. I Was Here As A Staffer When The Historic Civil Rights Bill Of 1964 Was Passed And Was Involved In The Drafting Of That Bill At A Very Low Kind Of Level And The Conflict That Occurred On That Occasion. Then I Came Back Into Government As The Head Of The Congressional Relations Function For A Cabinet-level Department. I Worked With Senator Dirksen In Trying To Pursue The Nixon Administration's Goals Forward And Ran Into A Bright Young Senator From Kansas With A Sharp Wit Named Bob Dole. I Had The Opportunity Of Working With Dirksen And Dole And The Others In That Situation. Watergate Came Along. I was given the dubious honor of being called to testify by a young Senator from Tennessee named Howard Baker. He assigned me to his staffer, who grilled me for 3 hours under oath Date(s) Held: 2010-12-09, 2010-11-30, 2010-12-08, 2010-12-09, 2010-12-10, 2010-12-13 111th Congress, 2nd Session GPO Document Source: CHRG-111shrg64801 Related Items:

20ERIC ED501530: High School Attrition Rates Across Texas Education Service Center Regions
By ERIC
The examination of historical trend data on the number and percent of students lost from public school enrollment prior to graduation from high school is becoming increasingly important since distinct trends are emerging on a regional basis. This study examines regional trends in Texas on the number and percent of students lost from public high school enrollment prior to graduation with a high school diploma. A comparative analysis of 1985-86, 2005-06 and 2006-07 attrition rates in Texas' 20 education service center (ESC) regions shows that eight Texas regions have persistently higher rates of losing students from public school enrollment. Education service center regions with traditionally high attrition rates include: ESC Region 1 (Edinburg), ESC Region 4 (Houston), ESC Region 10 (Richardson), ESC Region 13 (Austin), ESC Region 19 (El Paso), and ESC Region 20 (San Antonio). The highest attrition rates are primarily concentrated in regions with the largest student enrollment counts, particularly those in urban areas and those with the largest low-income and minority populations. Schools and communities in Texas and nationwide must work together to improve school holding power and student success. (Contains 12 exhibits.)

33ERIC ED544317: High School Attrition Rates Across Texas Education Service Center Regions: 2009-10. IDRA Report
By ERIC
Attrition rates are an indicator of a school's holding power, or ability to keep students enrolled in school and learning until they graduate. This study examines regional trends in Texas for the number and percent of students lost from public high school enrollment prior to graduation. A comparative analysis of 1985-86, 2005-06, 2006-07, 2007-08, 2008-09 and 2009-10 attrition rates in the 20 education service center (ESC) regions in Texas shows that five regions have persistently higher rates of losing students from public school enrollment and that racial-ethnic gaps have increased in all regions. In general, the "rate" of students lost has improved, while the "number" of students lost has increased. (Contains 22 exhibits.)

34ERIC ED609107: Assessment Of Effectiveness Of Tech Teach Across Texas Graduates. Policy Brief
By ERIC
This program evaluation study sought to discern if a preparation pathway offered by Texas Tech University (TTU), one that leverages community college graduates, was yielding desirable outcomes. The Teacher Education Department at Texas Tech University is committed to producing quality teachers that can immediately impact children upon entering the profession. The Department hosts two unique teacher preparation pathways. The TechTeach (TT) pathway prepares students at the university in a face-to-face format on the main Texas Tech University campus in Lubbock, Texas. The TechTeach Across Texas (TTAT) pathway is an accelerated, online format that recruits graduates from Associate of Arts in Teaching programs at community colleges from across the state. The purpose of this study was to examine teaching effectiveness of TTAT graduates and compare their effectiveness to the core of graduates from standard--including graduates from the TT campus-based program--and alternative certification programs in the state of Texas. The findings from this study should help inform future policy and programmatic decisions, including the support and propagation of similar programs across the state.

1Life of Kit Carson
By Edward S. Ellis

Christopher Carson, or as he was familiarly called, Kit Carson, was a man whose real worth was understood only by those with whom he was associated or who closely studied his character. He was more than hunter, trapper, guide, Indian agent and Colonel in the United States Army....His lot was cast on the extreme western frontier, where, when but a youth, he earned the respect of the tough and frequently lawless men with whom he came in contact. Integrity, bravery, loyalty to friends, marvelous quickness in making right decisions, in crisis of danger, consummate knowledge of woodcraft, a leadership as skillful as it was daring; all these were distinguishing traits in the composition of Carson and were the foundations of the broader fame which he acquired as the friend and invaluable counselor of Fremont, the Pathfinder, in his expeditions across the Rocky Mountains. 7English Girl's First Impressions of Burmah
By Beth Ellis

An English Girl's First Impressions of Burmah, by Beth Ellis, is a well-edited, turn-of-the-century journal documenting a young woman’s visit to Burma. The account documents her ocean voyage to Rangoon, and her stay in a small, jungle-embedded, European community in Remyo. The author, who travelled to Asia alone to visit her brother, is quick to laugh at her own exaggerated fears. She gives us a glimpse into the less-than-glamorous lives to Myanmar’s British occupiers. The book was published in 1899, just thirteen years after the conclusion of the third Anglo-Burmese war, when Britain took formal control of Myanmar and made it a province of India. 10In the Pecos Country
By Edward S. Ellis

Edward Sylvester Ellis was a major American author during the era of inexpensive fiction of the nineteenth century (dime novels). Because he wrote under dozens of pseudonyms, as well as under his own name, it is virtually impossible to know exactly how many books he wrote, but it is believed to be in the hundreds. He specialized in boys' stories, inspirational biography, and history for both children and adults. (From FictionDB.com) This is a western, set in the Pecos River valley in the late 19th century, post Civil War era.

12Little Bit of Fluff
By Walter W. Ellis

According to the website www.stagebeauty.net, this is the 5th longest running play ever, with over 1200 original performances. Like Charley's Aunt (number 2 on the list and released by Librivox earlier in 2018), this also is a farce. An insurance investigator, a possible fraudulent injury claim, a lost necklace, an aged aunt with a more than passing resemblance to someone else, and of course, that Little Bit of Fluff - all conspire to cause great confusion. - Summary by ToddHW <BR><BR>Cast list:<BR> JOHN AYERS: <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/10789">Tomas Peter</a><br> BERTRAM TULLY, His friend: <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/13072">Campbell Schelp</a><br> NIXON TRIPPETT, Inspector of Claims for the Motor ’Bus Company: <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/7079">Chuck Williamson</a><br> DR. 14Study of British Genius
By Havelock Ellis
The psychological and anthropological character of genius in the British Isles was investigated by Ellis. Citing and collating an extensive source of information from the Dictionary of National Biography, many pieces of informational are discussed, including the ancestral heritage, geographical distribution, professions, and health and morbidity of the most the most preeminent men and women of the time. This work also promotes his theory that large cities are not only counterproductive to the development of high achievers, but detrimental to national health. (Summary by Leon Harvey)

17Studies in the Psychology of Sex, Volume 3
By Havelock Ellis

Volume 3: Analysis of the Sexual Impulse; Love and Pain In the study of Love and Pain I have discussed the sources of those aberrations which are commonly called, not altogether happily, "sadism" and "masochism." Here we are brought before the most extreme and perhaps the most widely known group of sexual perversions. I have considered them from the medico-legal standpoint, because that has already been done by other writers whose works are accessible. I have preferred to show how these aberrations may be explained; how they may be linked on to normal and fundamental aspects of the sexual impulse; and, indeed, in their elementary forms, may themselves be regarded as normal. In some degree they are present, in every case, at some point of sexual development; their threads are subtly woven in and out of the whole psychological process of sex. I have made no attempt to reduce their complexity to a simplicity that would be fallacious. I hope that my attempt to unravel these long and tangled threads will be found to make them fairly clear. In the third study, on The Sexual Impulse in Women, we approach a practical question of applied sexual psychology, and a question of the first importance. No doubt the sex impulse in men is of great moment from the social point of view. It is, however, fairly obvious and well understood. The impulse in women is not only of at least equal moment, but it is far more obscure. The natural difficulties of the subject have been increased by the assumption of most writers who have touched it—casually and hurriedly, for the most part—that the only differences to be sought in the sexual impulse in man and in woman are quantitative differences. I have pointed out that we may more profitably seek for qualitative differences, and have endeavored to indicate such of these differences as seem to be of significance. - Summary by Havelock Ellis

22Studies in the Psychology of Sex Volume 4
By Havelock Ellis

The fourth of six volumes, this volume delves into how sensory stimuli: specifically through touch, smell, hearing, and vision, affect sexual attraction and choice in humans. Ellis aims to explore the psychological dimensions of sexual selection, underlining how these sensory interactions contribute to the complex phenomena of love and attraction. Written as an anthropological and psychological study from the point of view of Havelock, the famous British sexologist of the late 19th century, who was also a physician and social reformer. - Summary by Tim Ferreira and Jessie Percival
