This paper briefly reviews the information explosion of the last thirty years and the various attempts made to organize that information in new ways. Section B offers a brief historic review of modern classification and subject heading theory. Section C reviews the literature of automatic indexing, automatic abstracting, and automatic classification. The problems of large file organization, word meanings, and the limitation of such "automatic" methods are discussed. Section D sums up the state of the art in automatic indexing by concluding that human intellectual effort is still required in indexing. The computer is viewed as a valuable assistant in that intellectual effort and the wide variety of computer applications to indexing work is summarized. (Author)

Six major indexing and abstracting services were studied to isolate similarities and differences, obtain raw data, and attempt to estimate primary material covered by the services. The 1973 issues of all services were examined and statistics were obtained for periodical and non-periodical entries. Data were analyzed and the services compared by: (1) subject arrangement, (2) coverage and overlap of periodicals, (3) core periodicals, (4) coverage of nonjournal material and archives, (5) timeliness, (6) bibliographic description, and (7) origin of abstracts. Services were found to be uneven in coverage and timeliness. The authors concluded that: (1) each service's view of the scope of the field governs coverage of library science and/or information science literature, and periodical and/or nonperiodical literature, and (2) the low circulation of the services may hinder financing of improvements. It was recommended that the editors and representatives of the publishers meet to explore the possibility of linking English language services into a single, comprehensive service. Extensive data tables, lists, and service profiles are included. (KP)

The English-language literature since 1950 was searched to gather published reports of abstracting and indexing rates and costs, and cost figures for the complete preparation of secondary publication. The search located relevant information by 24 abstract journals and 3 citation services, 18 abstracting cost figures, and 41 indexing cost figures. These reported figures were extracted with text or other amplifying comment and tabulated, with reference made to the included 79-item bibliography. Unit costs per bibliographic item were cited or computed. These data were plotted to detect possible patterns or trends. The reported unit costs for preparation of the secondary services were adjusted for 1968 dollar value and were plotted by number of items cited annually. Abstracting costs and indexing costs were each plotted chronologically, and then in rank order with dollar value adjustments. Abstracting and indexing rates were plotted. The plots serve to illustrate the scattering of the data and emphasize the problem of drawing generalizations from the existing data. (Author)

Indexing and abstraction services in the social sciences are growing as primary sources. Results are that users become overwhelmed with the number of secondary services they use. Therefore, planning, coverage and overlap are examined in this research report with emphasis on reexamining secondary services and redefining users and users' needs. Overlap and coverage of secondary sources dealing with criminology and public administration were examined. Results showed that adequate but insufficient services are provided. Recommendations of this study are that the decision must be made whether broad or narrow coverage is to occur. It suggests that an identification be made of the material and user evaluation of services. (AP)

The report consists of 8 papers. The first four papers are concerned with the relationship between the part of speech of words and their graphic form. An operational definition of affixes is given, the usefulness of affixes in the automatic determination of parts of speech is discussed, and an algorithm is outlined for determining parts of speech with a dictionary look-up of less than 200 affixes and less than 800 words. The inflection of adjectives is also discussed, anticipating the need for future refinement of the part-of-speech algorithm, which at present identifies 11 part-of-speech categories. The fifth paper is a progress report on the development of a method for automatic indexing without reference to any pre-prepared dictionary, thesaurus, etc. It shows the current results on five text excerpts. The final three papers are concerned with the relationship between English phonetics and English morphology. One of the papers is concerned with homonyms, which represent a problem area in transformation from phonetic to graphic English. Another discusses a function for mapping written English into spoken English, and the third describes a computerized study of transcribed English phonetics as given by different dictionaries.

This publication outlines the basic guidelines for descriptive and subject cataloging of scientific and technical information resources collected by the Defense Technical Information Center (DTIC). It is arranged by Technical Report (TR) data element Field number, followed by alphabetical indexes. Each Field entry contains the title, maximum number of characters allowed, definition, purpose, chief source(s) of information and form(s) of entry. These Guidelines are an update to the 2005 version of the Cataloging Guidelines and the Abstracting and Indexing Guidelines prepared in 1989.

The manual explains abstracting and indexing styles and procedures used at the Council for Exceptional Children Information Center in preparing information for publication and entrance into the information retrieval system. General abstracting guidelines cover types of abstracts, form of abstract, content of abstract, abstracting guidelines for specific types of documents, methods of approach, permission to use author abstracts, and stylistic preferences. General indexing guidelines pertain to major indexing tools, what to index, and identifiers. Order and physical form of abstracts and record keeping are discussed in terms of procedures peculiar to local documents. Procedural and format differences peculiar to Educational Resources Information Center (ERIC) document for Research in Education are then explained. The nature of the Current Index to Journals in Education (CIJE), the ERIC journal article resume form, and procedural steps in processing CIJE articles are clarified. Miscellaneous procedures related to abstracting last explained are the abstract control list, thesaurus revision, and the ERIC quarterly report. This dictionary is a computer representation of standard English-Russian phrase technical dictionaries. A machine dictionary must exist for the same field as the text being indexed. The indexing portion of the system operates upon the machine dictionary. Russian text phrases are matched against Russian dictionary phrases. When a match is found, the English translation is extracted from the dictionary. The final index is constructed from the set of such English translations. The Russian dictionary entries are in canonical form. The indexing system contains reverse inflection algorithms which transform text phrases to their canonical forms.
