Full title: A Journal of the Plague Year: Being Observations or Memorials, Of the most Remarkable Occurrences, As well Publick as Private, Which happened in London During the last Great Visitation In 1665. Written by a Citizen who continued all the while in London. Never made publick before. 8vo. pp. [4], 287, [1]. Signatures: A2 B-T8. Contemporary blind-stamped calf, very neatly rebacked, later endleaves. Complete with half title. A few pen-trials in blank areas at beginning and end. Ownership inscription by W. Jackson on title page. First edition of one of the truly great early novels in English. Despite its deceptively dry approach (a recitation of daily ‘occurrences’ so realistic that it was long taken, as Defoe intended, for non-fiction), the author’s artistic command keeps the largely impersonal narrative compelling throughout, while his unvaunted humanity warms the anecdotal text from beginning to end. Once the narrator makes his eccentric but pious decision to remain in metropolitan London – never better evoked for this era, parish by parish, street by street – whatever is to eventuate, no responsive reader can put down the book.
