"Development Of Working Memory Across Toddlerhood And Implications For Language Development: Integrating Neuroimaging And Visual-Attentional Evidence" Description:
The Internet Archive:
Many aspects of cognitive growth hinge on children’s developing working memory (WM henceforth) and language skills (Passolunghi & Siegel, 2001; Vernucci et al., 2020; Lany, 2017). For instance, toddlers with a stronger WM tend to process transient speech more efficiently (Ronfard, Wei, & Rowe, 2021). However, studies examining the link between WM and language development have predominantly focused on older children, due in part to a lack of infant- and toddler-friendly tasks that sensitively detect individual differences in emerging WM. Even less is known about the neural correlates of WM during toddlerhood and their relations with early vocabulary and syntactic growth. In the current study, we measured children’s WM using event-related potential (ERP) and eye tracking indices and aim to 1) chart the developmental advances in WM during toddlerhood and 2) investigate whether individual differences in WM relate to variation in children’s language skills. The findings may shed light on the developmental advances in WM across toddlerhood and the neural networks and visual-attentional processes underlying WM growth. Moreover, understanding the associations between ERP/eye tracking measures and language skills may provide new insights into the cognitive resources and neural architecture contributing to early lexical and syntactic development.
