"Developing A Measure Of Cognitive Effort Suitable For Online Studies With Clinical And Non-clinical Populations" Description:
The Internet Archive:
Anhedonia is one of the principal symptoms of depression, and previous work using a paradigm called the ‘apple gathering task’ has linked anhedonia to alterations in sensitivity to physical effort (Valton et al. 2018). In this project we are aiming to develop and validate an analogous paradigm for cognitive effort, initially just in healthy participants (see Figure 1). We will analyse performance on the task itself, and also check that participants’ perceived task load accords with the effort levels of the task. Finally, we will also examine the relationship between cognitive effort sensitivity and six trait variables relevant to depression, including anhedonia. This task, like the ‘apple gathering task’ for physical effort, frames effort sensitivity as an economic decision – participants are offered a number of points and an effort level, and then choose whether or not to engage in a subsequent bout of effortful activity. The activity involves categorising each digit in a string of 9 numbers as either even or odd, and the effort level is set by manipulating the number of times the sequence switches from even to odd. Participants weigh the effort required against the points on offer and decide whether the activity is worth doing. If they accept the offer, participants must then perform the subsequent categorisation task accurately in order to win the points. Alternatively, if the offer is deemed to be unattractive and they reject it, they do not perform the task and move straight on to a new offer with a different combination of effort and reward.
