The Internet Archive:

Zabihullah: Assalam-o-Alaikum dear listeners. You are listening to the programme âDa Aman Awazâ sponsored by CRSS (Center for Research and Security Studies). I am your host âZabihullahâ and âAsma Aliâ is also with me in this programme. We welcome you in our show âDa Aman Awazâ and âZamong Awazâ. Asma Ali: You can also listen to this program from FM DI Khan, FM Kohat, FM Abottabbad and AM Radio Pakistan. You can participate in the program for this you can dial the number 091-111000101. You can also listen to our programmes on Facebook and the address of Facebook is Facebook.com/CRSS.pakistan. In this programme we will talk about Polio vaccination. Zabihullah: And we will talk about that whether we should vaccinate our children to overcome the overcome this disease of polio? And according to a reasearch in our Khyber Pakhtunkhwa there are 22 cases of polio victims and in Tribal areas the polio victims cases are 57. Asma Ali: And this disease was eradicated somehow but now the number of polio cases is again growing alarmingly specially in the Tribal areas where parents often avoid vaccinating their children. Zabihullah: Here we have a report about polio vaccination in Jalozai camp of IDPs of Tribal areas. Report: Kamran Afridi: Yesterday the people belong to Bajaur Agency refused to vaccinate their children in Jalozai camp of IDPs. They said: Respondent # 1: We refused to vaccinate our children as a protest against government as their conditions in Tents are deplorable and pitiable and Government is not paying any attention to our problems. We want to go back to our homes as here we are facing a lot of problems. We even want to commit suicide because our conditions are pitiable and no one is there to assist us. Respondent # 2: We are not against of this polio vaccination but now could not tolerate anymore. As government is not paying any attention to our problems so our elders decide to protest against polio vaccination. Then DCO of Nowshehra came here and promised us to solve our problems and then we vaccinated our children but till now no response came from his side. Here electricity provided to us but there are no fans and the weather is hot. Respondent # 3: We know very well that vaccination of polio is very important but we have no shelter. So Government should provide us shelter and if Government did not taken any steps then this time our protest will be so dangerous. Respondent # 4: In Bajaur we were not poor people and we were living a very good life there but Government and militants destroyed our homeland and then we came here to live. But four years passed and till now Government did not solved our problems. Respondent # 5: No one take interest in our problems as due to militancy and military operations our homes were smashed. Different NGOs come here and say that you may go to your Agency as that area is clear now. But we did not have any shelter there. Where do we live? As under the shelter of a tree no one can live his or her life. (Kamran Afridi-CRSS, Jalozai Camp) Zabihullah: Welcome back dear listeners. We have our guest with us in our studios named âDr Taimoor Shahâ. Who will talk about our todayâs topic. Dr Taimoor as you know that the IDPs living in camps are facing a lot of problems so if government want to provide them some relief then they even donât want to get that and even refuse that. So what would you want to say about that? Dr Taimoor Shah: You identified an important problem. And I would say that people should vaccinate their children as Government is providing this vaccination free of cost. And there are some incurable diseases among which polio is also included. And if someone becomes the victim of this disease he may suffer it for his whole life. And the victim of polio may live his life as handicapped. Zabihullah: My next question is that the backward and traditional areas are more suffering from this disease as compared to the developed and settled areas. So what is the reason behind this? Dr Taimoor Shah: The reason behind that is the insecurity there. As our teams of polio vaccination could not visit those areas. Thatâs the reason of more victims of polio are there in Tribal areas. Zabihullah: And another aspect is that those who come here and living in IDPs camps also refused to vaccinate their children. So how you deal such kind of conditions? Dr Taimoor Shah: For this we try to convince the parents of the children that they should vaccinate their children. And not only their children are in danger but as they are living here so the children of settled areas are also in danger. Because the virus of polio could be transform from one person to another one. Asma Ali: And we could talk about only tribal areas as there are also the victims of polio in the settled areas? Dr Taimoor Shah: Yes you are right this time there are four cases of polio in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. One case is in Peshawar, second case is in D.I.Khan, the third case of polio is in Lakki Marwat, and the fourth case of Polio is in Kohat. But according to genetic survey we come to know that these cases of settled areas have some connection with the Tribal areas. Means the virus of polio is transformed from the children of tribal areas as they came in the settled areas and living here as IDPs. Moreover this virus is also transformed from Sindh to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. As a lot of our people go to Sindh for jobs. And they bring this virus with them. Zabihullah: So Dr Taimoor what you say whether this virus transform from one child to another? Dr Taimoor Shah: Yes definitely this virus transform from the mouth of children so that why we should not take it easy. Asma Ali: And there is no test for it that we come to know about its victims? Dr Taimoor Shah: There are tests for it but if we scan our whole population then that will be so costly so thatâs why we are simply vaccinating al the children and now we are vaccinating the children three times in a month. And I would request to all the people that they should vaccinate their children when the teams of polio control programme come to their homes as our children are our future. Asma Ali: As you told that you lounged different campaigns for polio control so whether you achieved some success to control this disease? Dr Taimoor Shah: Yes we achieved success and I would give you some updates about our country and polio disease. This time the cases come forward to us of polio in our country are 21. Among them 4 are in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 2 are in Punjab, 3 are in Sindh, 2 are in Balochistan and in FATA these cases are 10. And in FATA there are 10 cases of polio in which 8 are in Khyber Agency and one is in North Waziristan and another is in South Waziristan. And the reason behind these cases in specific areas is that there the situation of law and order is not good. So our teams could not visit there. The four cases in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are reported in January, 2012. Zabihullah: How much the people of our society aware about this issue as in the past most of the people were refused to vaccinate their children? Dr Taimoor Shah: Now people are well aware about it as we can see in the past people were not co-operating with us but now they co-operate with us. Moreover our leaders are also co-operating with us. Caller # 1: I am Rizwan speaking from Khyber Agency. And we provided protection to the teams of polio programme. Government is providing this vaccination free of cost to us so we should vaccinate our children as this is a very dangerous disease. Caller # 2: I would say this to the people of Jalozai camp that they should not use their children to solve their problems. That the result of such kind of protest may worse as they could be handicapped for the whole life. Caller # 3: My question is that one of our children is ill because the polio team given the complete bottle of polio vaccine? Dr Taimoor Shah: Firstly I would make clear the difference between vaccine and medicine. Vaccination is used to prevent a disease and medication is used to treat a disease that someone has. As vaccine have no side affects. But give only two drops of vaccine to the children but if complete bottle is given to them by the polio team then its wrong and they should complaint for it. Zabihullah: Here we have a report prepared by the reporter of CRSS named âGohar Wazirâ about a handicapped person who is the victim of polio in Bannu. So letâs listen to this report. Report: Gohar Wazir: In Bannu, Muslim abad village children play a lot of games every afternoon. Sabil Rehman is also an 11 year old child who often sees the games of other children because he could not play such games. Sabil Rehman: I want to play games but I could not because I am handicapped. Some children play cricket some play volleyball. But I could not play any game because of my disease of polio. Gohar Wazir: How you feel when you look at the others to play games? Sabil Rehman: I often think that if I was physically fit then I would also play games with them. Gohar Wazir: This child becomes the victim of polio 11 years before when he was a child. His father said: Father of victim: 11 years before when my child born after he become 7months old then we felt that there is some fault in his foot. But doctors said that this is incurable disease. I am a poor man and I earn 200 Rupees daily wages. When I look at the condition of my child I become mentally stressed. If my child was physically fit then he would assist me. Sabil Rehman: I would give a message to all people that they should vaccinate their children to prevent this disease. As polio made me handicapped for my whole life. Gohar Wazir: Polio is a disease which is terminal and in recent past the polio control teams could not visit Waziristan due to terrorism and insecurity. (Gohar Wazir- CRSS, Bannu) Asma Ali: In this report one important thing which is revealed is that if someone becomes the victim of polio then there is no cure for it? Dr Taimoor Shah: Yes this disease is caused by a kind of virus which is very dangerous. And it is incurable disease. Caller # 4: I am in favor of polio vaccination but here are some people who say that in it there is something which are prohibited in Islam and some mention that it makes children mentally weak and such other statements are given by them. So we often argue that these vaccines are checked in Pakistani laboratories. Moreover they often say that polio is not only one disease in our country there are also some other diseases. But for that there is no free of cost treatment provided by the government. So what you say about it? Caller # 5: I would give a suggestion that we should convince the religious leaders (Mulla) of villages for this programme as people do whatever he asks them. Dr Taimoor Shah: One caller mentions that there are also other diseases then why government is not providing free treatment for them. So vaccination is not as much costly as medicines are. And vaccination is provided free of cost to all over the world to their citizens. And if there is something dangerous or prohibited then Benazir Bhutto Shaheed vaccinated her daughter by self. And our ministers vaccinate their children by self. So if there was something harmful then how could they vaccinate their children? Zabihullah: But here is lack of education and awareness. And another thing is that people did not have as much access to media. Dr Taimoor Shah: Then for this I would say that if you have any religious problem then you went to see a religious leader. But if you have a health related issue then you should visit a doctor. And if we did not control this disease then it can be possible that Pakistannis would be banned for international traveling. As you may listened that last year when people went to Saudi Arabia for Hajj then at Jeddah Air port all Pakistanis were vaccinated. And if Pakistannis were banned then no one would go to any other country for Hajj or for jobs. And we are doing struggle to control polio. Zabihullah: You listened to the programme. We should vaccinate our children to eradicate this dangerous disease. Stay Blessed. Good Bye.
