"Creating Silos Of Belonging In Academia: Do Underrepresented Minorities Want To Belong In Academia Anyway? A Mixed-Methods Assessment Of Sense Of Belonging Among URM In STEM" Description:
The Internet Archive:
While sense of belonging is viewed as a critical component of the well-being and success of an individual, further investigation as to what domains historically underrepresented students in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) belong to is necessary. Much of the research has focused on the feelings of belonging more broadly, however, given the lower feelings of belonging and underrepresentation of URM in STEM compared to non-URM members, specifying which areas students perceive to be integral to their belonging is vital to understanding the academic and career goals of historically underrepresented students in STEM. In a cross-sectional mixed methods study of undergraduate students at four large, public university in the Northeast pursuing undergraduate degrees in STEM, we plan to explore sense of belonging as it pertains to academic (academic and research opportunities for engagement, academic self-efficacy, STEM self-efficacy and academic and career goals) and interpersonal (social network and social support) outcomes (Study 1). Second, in an experimental study, I plan to test the effect of identity-safety cues on a participant’s feelings of belonging and connection to three different domains (1) the institution (2) their STEM field of study and (3) their social network.
