"Beyond Positive Partisanship: Understanding The Roles Of Negative Identity, Affect And Media Consumption In Individual Climate And Environmental Policy Preferences And Beliefs" Description:
The Internet Archive:
For climate and environmental policies to succeed, public acceptance and support are key. Positive partisanship has been studied extensively in this context and existing literature seems to indicate its strong relationship with individuals’ attitudes towards such policies. In recent years, however, calls for a more nuanced understanding of political identity – including positive partisanship - have grown. Due to the politicised nature of climate change and the prominence of negative attitudes towards parties and politicians, negative partisanship and affect have received increased attention. This study intends to advance our understanding of the relationship between individuals and political parties by exploring how individuals’ identification with and affect towards parties might form barriers or opportunities to climate and environmental policy. Moreover, as previous research has identified a link between media coverage and the relationship between political parties and individuals’ opinions, individual media consumption will be explored. Using British Election Study and British Social Attitudes Survey data, quantitative analyses will be conducted to explore the association between positive partisanship, negative affect and individual climate and environmental policy preferences. Following a mediation model, the possible association between individual media consumption and climate and environmental policy preferences, via positive partisanship will be examined. This study will contribute to our theoretical understanding of negative partisanship as a political identity and its distinction from negative affect in individuals’ political decision making. Further implications of the results, for both theory and practice will be discussed and directions for future research will be given.
