Snippets and Summary:

In the main Suzzallo Library on campus, I tried to find books about the building of thinking machines, but I did not know what topic to look under. I tried neuroscience, and I discovered the books of my future correspondent, the Nobelist Sir John Carew Eccles, who had discovered how the synapse works in the brain. Sir Eccles was awarded the Nobel prize medallion with a Latin paraphrase from Vergil's description of happy souls found by pius Aeneas in the Champs Elysees: "INVENTAS VITAM IUVAT ECOLUISSE PER ARTES." Gradually I learned that the term for the field in which I wanted to work was "artificial intelligence," but the field was not very far along. There was no particular subject in which I could major as a path to an AI career, so I developed my lifelong modus operandi as an independent scholar.
