"A Cross-cultural Study On The Role Of Macro-, Meso-, And Micro-level Factors In Work Addiction And Related Health Problems" Description:
The Internet Archive:
Work addiction is among the potential behavioral addictions as candidates for formal recognition. It was defined in congruence with addiction models as “characterized by a compulsion to work and preoccupation with work activities leading to significant harm and distress of a functionally impairing nature to the individual and/or other significantly relevant relationships (friends, family). The behavior is characterized by the loss of control over the working activity and persists over a significant period of time.” (Atroszko, Demetrovics, & Griffiths, 2019, p. 9). Currently, the literature on work addiction is repleted with micro-level theories of addiction that offer important insights into individual processes leading to addiction. Increasing attention is devoted to meso-level factors such as job demands or organizational support (see Clark et al. 2016). However, few offer much consideration of macro-level factors (e.g., socioeconomic insecurity, country-level socioeconomic development or average annual hours worked per worker). Therefore, the main purpose of the current project is to examine the role of macro-level (i.e., cultural and socioeconomic), meso-level (i.e., organizational), and micro-level (i.e., individual) factors in work addiction. The data will provide substantial evidence to show to what extent and in what way work addiction is determined by cultural, socioeconomic, organizational, and individual factors. The identification of risk factors at different levels will allow preparing more comprehensive approaches to the prevention and treatment of work addiction, which take into account the cultural, socioeconomic, and organizational specificity.
