Poster for my talk, "Computer Arts and Media",<div>  January 1973, at U. Illinois Chicago Circle Campus.</div><div>  Unnfortunately there is no recording.</div><div><br /></div><div>➜ NOTE: January 29, 2023, was the FIFTIETH<br /></div><div>  ANNIVERSARY OF THIS TALK.</div><div><br /></div><div>(I believe I had just thought of the title "Computer Lib"</div><div>  for the book I was starting to put together, but that's another story.)</div><div><br /></div><div>The talk was intended for the minds of (hypothesized)</div><div>  future-yearning eccentrics,</div><div>  some of whom may have been present.</div><div> <br /></div><div>Note the two-handed operation-- one holds a haptic joystick,</div><div>  (not a mouse) while the other arm reaches in (haptically)</div><div>  to interact with the different objects.  They run the gamut</div><div>  from buildings (later CAD) to cartoon characters</div><div>  (later Pixar) to dinosaurs (as in "Jurassic Park"),</div><div>  foreseeing a range of enactments, subjects and interactions</div><div>  that would come to pass.</div><div><br /></div><div>Note that "MOVIE SYNTHESIZERS" are now called CGI,</div><div>  in universal use, and "CRYSTAL BALLS" means the viewers</div><div>  we now have.</div><div><br /></div><div>Note that "RESPONDING ENVIRONMENTS" are now called</div><div>  Personal Computers, Operating Systems, Applications,</div><div>  Web pages, Websites, Computer Games, Forums, "The Net,"</div><div>  Airplane Flight Decks (no longer called "cockpits"),</div><div>  Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, and High-End Sex Toys,</div><div>  to name a few.  </div><div><br /></div><div>Oh yeah, and the phone in your pocket.</div><div><br /></div><div>Note that "multi-media" would have meant something to</div><div>  audiences at that time (slide shows with sound).</div><div><br /></div><div>Whereas the words left out ("hypertext" and "hypermedia")</div><div>  were as yet generally unheard of, though already published,</div><div>  and so "multidimensional writings of the future" was the best</div><div>  available thought for that audience.</div><div><br /></div><div><div>In 1973 these matters ideas were embryonic at best</div><div>  (clickable links, which I first created in 1969,</div><div>  were in various closed-garden hypertexts),</div><div>  but there was no overall hypertext environment.</div><div><br /></div></div><div>Copies of this poster, as posted on walls,</div><div>  had their rainbows colored in by hand</div><div>  with day-glow highlighter pens.</div><div><br /></div><div>If you like the poster and want to frame it,</div><div>  I suggest you color it likewise before framing.</div><div><br /></div><div>Umpward!</div><div><br /></div><div>TN</div>
