Speaker: David Granatstein, Sustainable Agriculture Specialist Affiliation: WSU Tree Fruit Research and Extension Center, Wenatchee, WA 98801-1230 Synopsis: First, Mr. Granatstein notes several reasons to control weeds including limiting competition for young trees with nutrients and water, minimizing rodent (e.g., voles) habitat, eliminating hosts for pest and disease and to avoid blocking irrigation sprinklers. He describes the standard orchard system with herbicide strip and grass alley and noted that about 20 sq. ft. of weed free space is needed per tree during May-July. He lists six different weed control options (noting pros and cons) including: residual and contact herbicides, mowing, tillage, flaming, inert mulches and living mulches. Mr. Granatstein briefly discusses the issue of sub-lethal effects of glyphosate. He described research supporting the benefits of using wood chip mulch for weed control. He also discussed the concept of growing your own mulch. He notes that the use of living mulches in older trees has several benefits including excluding undesirable weeds while fixing nitrogen, improving soil quality and providing beneficial insect habitat. He presents economic data for several alternative weed control strategies. He described a large-scale, 3-year organic trial looking at mulch, tillage, flaming or herbicides in Gala apple and Anjou pears. Over the three year period for Gala apple, they noted significant positive return on investment using mulch verse herbicide/flaming or tillage. He suggests several options for the future.

The Mansonia species of mosquitos are a group of insects that can transmit various diseases to humans and animals. They are found in tropical and subtropical regions, especially in areas with aquatic plants. Mansonia mosquitos have a unique way of feeding: they use their piercing mouthparts to cut through the stems of plants and suck the sap. This allows them to stay submerged for long periods of time and avoid predators.

Introduction   Rice ( Oryza sativa L.) is one of the world’s most important food crops. Currently, more than one third of the human population relies on rice for their daily sustenance. Rice is predominantly grown by transplanting seedlings into puddled (conventional wet-tillage) soil and kept flooded for most part of the growing season. The puddled soil ensures good crop establishment, weed control with standing water, and reduces deep-percolation losses. However, the conventional method of rice crop establishment requires a large amount of water, labour, and energy, which are gradually becoming scarce and more expensive. Thus, reducing the profitability and sustainability of puddled transplanted rice. Dry direct seeded rice has shown promise under several ecologies and production systems to overcome these challenges, and is considered as potential alternative to puddled transplanted rice. Weed infestation in direct-seeded rice fields remains the single largest constraint limiting their productivity. An effective early weed management tactic is imperative for any direct-seeded rice production technology aiming at achieving higher productivity and profitability. Materials and Methods   In order to investigate the effect of different weed managements on yield and yield components of rice in the direct crop system, an experiment was conducted in 2020 on farms located in Babolsar (Behnamir). The experiment was performed as a factorial based on randomized complete block design with three replications. Experimental factors include rice cultivars ( Shiroudi , Khazar and Hashemi) as well as other treatments including weed control by increasing the competitiveness of rice seeds by coating and weed management at five levels including coating the seeds with CaCl 2 and KCl, weeding, chemical control (Council active) and control   (no weeding). Results and Discussion   Weed management by coating rice seeds with calcium chloride, potassium chloride, chemical control and weeding was reduced 26, 26, 23 and 63% dry weight of broadleaf weeds and 14, 27, 9 and 36% dry weight of narrow leaf weeds, respectively , compared to control treatment. The maximum emergence percentage in Shiroudi cultivar with 99, 97 and 95% was obtained under weeding, coating the seeds with CaCl 2 and KCl treatment, respectively. Also, the highest emergence rate was observed under the management of weeding and coating of potassium and calcium chloride seeds. Seed coating with CaCl 2 and KCl substantially improved the stand establishment under drought and well-watered conditions owing to early completion of pre-germination metabolic activities during priming. In general, the results of mean comparison showed that weed management improved rice height compared to the control treatment. The results of this study attributed the increase in height to the effect of pretreatment on increasing the rate of emergence and better establishment of seedlings due to better plant use of related resources. The results showed that the maximum number of seeds per panicles with 137 were obtained in Khazar cultivar . The highest number of seeds per panicles with 127, 124 and 122 seeds was under weeding management and coating with CaCl 2 and KCl, respectively. The results of cultivar effect showed that the maximum 1000-seed weight with 23.83 g was observed in Shiroudi cultivar. Also, 1000-seed weight in Khazar and Hashemi cultivars were 22.1 and 21.09 g, respectively. The reason for the increase in the number of 1000-seed weight in Shiroudi cultivar can be attributed to the genetic potential and physiological quality of this cultivar. Also, the results of weed management effect showed that coating rice seeds with calcium chloride and potassium chloride, chemical control and weeding increased 14, 26, 4 and 33% of grain yield and 4, 14, 2 and 18% of biological yield compared to control treatment, respectively. Improved yield by seed coating in direct seeded rice might be the result of enhanced dry matter partitioning toward the panicles that resulted in improved kernel yield. Conclusion   According to the results of this study, seed coating treatments with CaCl 2 and KCl in rice cultivars can increase rice yield by improving seedling characteristics. Therefore, farmers can be advised to use a simple and inexpensive crop management method to pretreated seeds with CaCl 2 and KCl .

Waterways of the Sacramento San Joaquin Delta have recently become infested with invasive aquatic weeds such as floating water hyacinth (Eichhoria crassipes) and water primrose (Ludwigia peploides). These invasive plants cause many negative impacts, including, but not limited to: the blocking of waterways for commercial shipping and boating; clogging of irrigation screens, pumps and canals; and degradation of biological habitat through shading. Zhang et al. (1997, Ecological Applications, 7(3), 1039-1053) used NASA Landsat satellite imagery together with field calibration measurements to map physical and biological processes within marshlands of the San Francisco Bay. Live green biomass (LGB) and related variables were correlated with a simple vegetation index ratio of red and near infra-red bands from Landsat images. More recently, the percent (water area) cover of water hyacinth plotted against estimated LGB of emergent aquatic vegetation in the Delta from September 2014 Landsat imagery showed an 80 percent overall accuracy. For the past two years, we have partnered with the U. S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Department of Plant Sciences, University of California at Davis to conduct new validation surveys of water hyacinth and water primrose coverage and LGB in Delta waterways. A plan is underway to transfer decision support tools developed at NASA's Ames Research Center based on Landsat satellite images to improve Delta-wide integrated management of floating aquatic weeds, while reducing chemical control costs. The main end-user for this application project will be the Division of Boating and Waterways (DBW) of the California Department of Parks and Recreation, who has the responsibility for chemical control of water hyacinth in the Delta.

A field experiment was conducted during Summer and Kharif seasons of 2007-08 and 2008-09 at Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya, Nadia, West Bengal, India to study the effect of hand weeding and Pretilachlor 50 EC @ 500 g a.i. ha -1 as pre-emergence on weed management of different varieties of hybrid and high yielding rice. The experiment was laid out in a split-plot design with three replications for both the years. It has been observed that Pretilachlor 50 EC @ 500 g a.i. ha -1 has a significant effect to control complex weed flora both in hybrid and high yielding varieties of rice but hand weeding twice gave the better result as expected. Among the varieties, the hybrid varieties recorded 36% and 32% more grain yield in Summer and Kharif seasons respectively than high yielding varieties (HYV). The high yielding variety 6444 (V2) showed more grain yield during Summer and Kharif seasons than that of the hybrid 6129 (V1), 97158 (V6), and 96110 (V3), respectively. Regarding weed management, hand weeding twice recorded (13% & 36%) higher grain yield during Summer than that of the chemical treatment and unweeded check, and (20% & 42%) during Kharif seasons respectively. Among the interaction, hand weeding combined with all varieties of hybrid rice recorded higher yield in comparison to other treatment combinations.

Introduction Mixed cropping is one of the components of sustainable agriculture, if done correctly and the appropriate plant species are selected, it increases yield, improves economic efficiency, preserves natural resources, increases the efficiency of resource use in organic farming and it can be useful in pest, diseases and weeds control. Mixed cropping of oilseeds and legumes is a type of mixed cropping systems that increases the performance of the mixed components, reduces the need for nitrogen fertilizer compared to pure cultivation, increases the efficiency of the consumption of nutrients and water, and causes disruption of specific host diseases. According to the fact that the two plants, bean and sesame have an acceptable time of simultaneous cultivation, therefore it seems that the Mixed cropping of these two plants can achieve the benefits of a mixed cultivation system and increase the productivity of production in the management of weeds. Based on the conducted research, the mixture of oilseeds and legumes increases the performance of the components of the mixture, and on the other hand, due to the potential of nitrogen biofixation in legumes, it reduces the need for nitrogen fertilizer compared to their pure cultivation and significantly suppresses facilitate weeding. The present study was conducted in order to investigate the weed control methods on yield and land equation ratio under the influence of mixed cropping bean and sesame .   Materials and Methods This experiment was conducted as a 6×3 factorial in the form of a randomized complete block design with three replications during 2019-2020 in a farm of Hossein Abad village at Shirvan- Iran. The treatments included different ratios of sesame: bean at 6 levels (100:0, 25:100, 50:100, 75:100, 100:100 and 0:100) at the optimum bean and sesame density (40 pl. m -2 ) and weed control methods in three levels including the use of trifluralin herbicide (960 a.i ha -1 ) mixed with the soil surface two weeks before planting, and hand weeding 35 and 55 days after planting (DAP). Irrigation was done by drip irrigation every week until seed filling stage . When the sesame seeds were at the physiological ripening stage and the pods of the bean plant were yellow, harvesting was done from an area of ​​one square meter on 24 September. After drying the harvested plants in the open air, their biomass and seed yield were measured and the land equation ratio (LER) was determined.   Results and Discussion The results showed that in all bean and sesame mixed cropping ratios, especially the 75:100 ratio, hand weeding treatments had a higher LER compared to the trifluralin herbicide application treatment. The highest bean grain yield (336.16 g.m -2 ) and biomass (953.68 g.m -2 ) and the highest sesame grain yield (252.68 g.m -2 ) and biomass (average 860.88 g.m -2 ) were observed in pure bean sesame cultivation + use of trifluralin. However, in all bean and sesame mixed cropping treatments, LER was higher than monoculture treatments. The highest LER (1.80) was observed in the hand weeding treatment 55 days after planting in the 75:100 (sesame:bean) mixed cropping   ratio. Therefore, the aforementioned treatment can be useful and recommended in weed management as well as increasing yield and biomass in bean and sesame mixed cropping systems.   Conclusions According to the results of this research, mixed cropping of sesame and beans with a ratio of 75:100 (sesame:bean) + 55 DAP can be useful and recommended in this mixed cropping   system and it’s weed management in Shirvan-Iran conditions. However, in pure cultivation of beans and sesame, the use of trifluralin has better results.

The present study aimed to study the effect of different weed control methods on growth, dry matter accumulation and yield of maize. The experiment was conducted at Main Agricultural Research Station (MARS), College of Agriculture, Dharwad during 2014. Six herbicides were used in nine treatments using Randomized Block Design having three replications.T8 (weed free check) was recorded significantly higher leaf area, dry matter production, grain yield and stover yield than all other treatments. The next best treatments were T7 (Atrazine @ 1 kg ha-1 + 2 IC + 1 HW), T4 (Atrazine @ 1 kg ha-1 fbSaflufenacil @ 75 g ha-1) and T2 (Atrazine @ 1 kg ha-1 fbParaquat @ 1 kg ha-1).
