In 1841, the American slaving brig Creole — en route from Norfolk, Virginia, to New Orleans — was hijacked by slaves, who freed themselves by sailing into British-held Nassau, where slavery had been abolished three years earlier. This scholarly paper examines the history and significance of the event.

When it arrived, the ship's captain was gone as well as most of the slaves. Jeffrey Kerr-Ritchie told the story of the "Creole" revolt and the insight it gives into the domestic U.S. slave trade. He is the author of "Rebellious Passage: The Creole Revolt and America's Coastal Slave Trade." The Virginia Museum of History and Culture hosted this program and provided the video.
