5The Role Of Gestures On Monitoring Of Spatial Problem Solving

By

We will investigate whether encouraging gesture use would influence the participants' monitoring of spatial problem solving and if the answer is yes, in which possible ways. Use of gestures enhance task performance on spatial domains and it is a well-documented finding in the literature. We would look for whether this effect extends to metacognitive processes.

7Information Transfer Of Solutions To A Novel Problem (the “Rubik’s Twist Task”) Within And Between Autistic And Non-Autistic Adults. How Accurately Do Chains Of Autistic And Non-Autistic Adults Predict Their Performance On A Novel Problem-Solving Task (the “Rubik’s Twist Task”), And Does This Differ Depending On Whether They Complete The Task With Someone Of A Matched Or Mis-Matched Neurotype?

By

Brief Introduction Autism spectrum disorder (henceforth “autism”) is characterised by impairments in social communication and interaction (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). This currently prevailing deficit-model of autism assumes differences in communication between autistic and non-autistic people are solely a result of autistic shortcomings (Milton, 2012). However, recent research examining non-autistic to autistic, and autistic to autistic, social interaction has begun to challenge this, suggesting that social and communication difficulties experienced by autistic people may be the result of a mismatch between autistic and non-autistic communication styles. For example, autistic communication may be more direct and literal - a style potentially deemed rude by non-autistic people but favoured by autistic (Sasson et al., 2017; Crompton, Hallett et al., 2020). This may lead to autistic people feeling more comfortable and relaxed around other autistic people (Crompton, Ropar et al., 2020; Crompton, Hallett et al., 2020; Chen et al., 2021; Granieri et al., 2020; Williams et al., 2021) and thus preferring to spend time with them (DeBrabander et al., 2019; Morrison et al., 2020). Conversely, when autistic people interact with non-autistic people their behaviours, social judgements, and resulting misunderstandings can exacerbate autistic social difficulties (Milton, 2012; DeBrabander et al., 2019; Botha & Frost, 2020). Direct evidence of intact communication efficacy between autistic partners, and selective breakdowns in communication between autistic and non-autistic partners, was published by Crompton, Ropar et al. (2020, henceforth “Crompton et al., 2020”). A cultural learning paradigm (known as a “diffusion chain”; Flynn & Whiten, 2008) was utilised to measure the transmission of information within “chains” of eight people where (a) all participants were autistic (b) all participants were non-autistic, and (c) participants alternated between autistic and non-autistic. The authors found that autistic people transferred information to and from other autistic people as effectively as non-autistic people transferred information with non-autistic people. However, information sharing broke down – that is, significantly less information was transferred – in the mixed chain which alternated between autistic and non-autistic people. Crompton et al. (2020) did have some limitations in that it included a relatively modest sample (N=72) and recruited from a single geographical location. The authors therefore performed an extensive replication, including a substantially larger sample and recruitment from three independent sites. The study we propose in this pre-registration utilises data from this replication study. Crompton et al. (2020) tasked participants with retelling a fictional story, thus the information to be remembered and transmitted was language based and in a specific format. Consequently, to assess whether the effect was generalisable to a less verbal task, the replication study included a “Rubiks Twist” task. It is this task we propose to analyse in this pre-registration. The task will be described in more detail below, but in essence it used the same diffusion chain paradigm but instead of retelling a story, participants were asked to create a dog shape from a 3D puzzle toy known as a Rubik’s Twist. Chains consisted of six participants and the first participant watched a video of an experimenter successfully creating a dog shape from this toy. The Rubik’s Twist consisted of 24 prism-shaped wedges that could be twisted or turned to create a wide range of shapes and thus this new task was inherently more visual in nature and likely drew on a different range of cognitive abilities. Note, although the task did not necessarily require the transmission of verbal information to obtain the task goal, it was not a completely non-verbal task and the use of verbal communication (e.g., information about how to perform certain actions) is likely to have aided performance. In addition to replicating the original study, the authors extended it by exploring whether being informed of the diagnostic status of one’s interaction partner affects information transfer. In Crompton et al. (2020), participants were informed of the diagnostic status of their partner prior to commencing an interaction. However, in real-world interactions many autistic adults choose not to disclose their diagnosis to avoid bias and discrimination (Jones et al., 2021) and emerging evidence suggests that awareness of an autism diagnosis influences how autistic people are perceived by non-autistic, but not other autistic people (DeBrabander et al., 2019; Sasson & Morrison, 2019). A diagnostic-informing manipulation was therefore added to explore whether such patterns have downstream effects on communication and information sharing. Our first aim is to examine the effect of matched and mismatched neurotype on information transfer in this less verbal task. Information transferred is referred to as “Objective Performance” and consists of a score to represent how closely the dog shape a participant produces matches that of the dog shape shown to the first participant via video. We predict a replication of the original (Crompton et al., 2020) finding showing that information transfer degrades most rapidly in chains of mixed interactions, compared with chains of single-neurotype interactions. However, it is possible that the different cognitive requirements presented by our new task – namely, a decrease in verbal and language skills and an increase in visuospatial (Carroll, 1993; Frick et al., 2013) – could act to diminish some of the communication difficulties/potential anxieties faced by the mixed pairs, making the task more resilient to mismatches in communication style. Moreover, the requirement to draw on different cognitive capacities could disproportionally increase performance in one group. Secondly, we will extend our analyses from objective performance to examine participants’ subjective performance which will enable us to answer questions on accuracy of self-assessment in autistic and non-autistic people. Self-assessment refers to an ability to accurately gauge one’s level of task performance and is considered an aspect of metacognition (DeBrabander et al., 2021). Under- or over-assessing one’s abilities can have a detrimental influence, not only on current task performance, but also broader functional outcomes (Bowie et al., 2007; Harvey & Pinkham, 2015). Moreover, reduced self-assessment accuracy has even been shown to predict functional outcomes better than objective performance (Gould et al., 2015; Silberstein et al., 2018). The literature relating this area to autism is sparse – studies on autism and metacognition often focus on assessment of one’s own mental state (Bird & Cook, 2013) or memory (Grainger et al., 2014) rather than performance. A recent study (DeBrabander et al., 2021) looked at self-assessment and performance on specific general and social cognitive tasks, finding evidence that autistic adults may show lower self-assessment accuracy than non-autistic adults on social cognitive tasks. However, this study looked at self-assessment in an individual capacity, but accurate self-assessment may also be important for changing one’s behaviour - and thus outcomes - in “real time” during interactions e.g., assessment of performance in an interview or meeting, or during a collaborative task. These data provide a unique opportunity to examine self-assessment accuracy in autistic and non-autistic people and how this may have been affected by interacting with someone of the same or a different neurotype. Thirdly, we will examine whether being in an informed or uninformed diffusion chain (i.e. knowing the diagnostic status of one’s interaction partner) affects objective and subjective performance. As discussed above, disclosing an autism diagnosis influences how autistic people are perceived by non-autistic people, and may therefore have a downstream effect on communication (Sasson & Morrison, 2019; DeBrabander et al., 2019; Thompson-Hodgetts et al., 2020) and information sharing.

16Trialling Simplification Strategies For Maths Word Problem Solving In Children And Adolescents With Developmental Language Disorder (DLD)

By

Mathematical word problems are common in materials used for teaching and assessing maths ability and are among the most challenging problem type that children encounter (Daroczy et al., 2015). Word problems have an additional layer of complexity because they require children to build a situational model from the text (i.e., a mental representation of the scenario described in the text) and derive a ‘problem model’ (i.e., a representation of the mathematical structure of the problem based on the quantitative relationships described in the text), separate from the demands on computation skill (Nathan et al., 1992; Walkington et al., 2019). The linguistic complexity of word problems means that they are likely to pose considerable difficulties for children with developmental language disorder (DLD), and indeed, evidence suggests that children with language disorders perform disproportionately poorly on tasks with high verbal content (e.g., word problems) relative to typically-developing peers (Cross et al., 2019). Word problems may be challenging for students because they often include irrelevant contextual or numerical information, involve complex syntactic structures and domain-specific vocabulary, or contain language that is inconsistent with the numerical operation. This is illustrated in the following simple 1-step example: “Joey had 14 books. He had 5 more than Mary. How many books did Mary have?” To reach the solution, students must understand that “more” relates to a subtraction operation, not addition. Recent work has trialled the implementation of strategies that simplify additive maths word problems, and examined how this supports problem-solving approaches in French-speaking children with and without language disorders (Barilaro et al., in press). These strategies comprised: 1) removing irrelevant contextual information from the text; 2) simplifying syntactic structures; 3) removing irrelevant numerical information. These modifications were made to ‘change’ and ‘compare’ problems that contained both consistent and inconsistent mappings between the problem structure and the language used to describe it. The authors reported that children with DLD were less likely to use structurally-appropriate strategies to solve the problems compared to TD children, even after the implementation of the simplification methods. Of the three simplification strategies, the removal of the irrelevant numerical information appeared to be the most helpful for both groups, although for the DLD group, simplifications were more effective for ‘change’ problems than ‘compare’ problems, and the children with DLD found inconsistent word problems disproportionately challenging, even once simplifications had been applied. This project will build on Barilaro et al. (in press) by investigating how successive simplifications to additive word problems support word problem solving in children and adolescents with (D)LD. We depart from the original study by including a much larger sample of children and adolescents with DLD, and varying the order in which simplifications are administered. This will address the confound in the original study between the effectiveness of individual strategies and the order in which they were administered. Our three primary research questions are 1) Which types of word problems are most challenging for children and adolescents with (D)LD? 2) Is there a cumulative effect of multiple simplification strategies on participants’ ability to derive the word problem structure, and is this modulated by language consistency and word problem type? 3) How does each simplification strategy, or combination of strategies, affect participants’ ability to derive the word problem structure? We will also conduct a secondary analysis to examine the relative contribution of arithmetic skill and ability to derive the word problem structure on students’ overall word problem solving accuracy.

The purpose of this study is to identify correlates of those who report having Aha! Experiences. As we better understand the correlates, perhaps this information can be used to enhance problem solving and innovation in organizations.

21Solving The N-Body Problem In (2+1)-Gravity

By

We construct a non-perturbative, single-valued solution for the metric and the motion of $N$ interacting particles in $2+1$-Gravity. The solution is explicit for two particles with any speed and for any number of particles with small speed. It is based on a mapping from multivalued Minkowskian coordinates to single-valued ones, which solves the non-abelian monodromies due to particles' momenta. The two and three-body cases are treated in detail.

22Microsoft Research Video 103501: Solving The Parallel Programming Problem: Patterns, Programmability And Choice

By

How do we get programmers to routinely write parallel software? We have been working in earnest on this problem for over 25 years; actually much longer if you consider that the first multi-threaded machine appeared in 1958 (the Gamma 60 by Bull). But at this point, I’m not sure we’re really getting any closer to solving it. If we study the history of parallel programming, it is clear that in order to solve the parallel programming problem we need to: (1) understand how people write parallel software (mine the key design patterns), (2) agree on how to discuss programmability, and (3) stop scaring away our software developers. In this talk, I will describe these issues and how my (our?) collaborations at the UC Berkeley’s ParLab are addressing them. ©2009 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

24Learning To Disregard: The Optimization Of Problem-Solving Strategies In The Presence Of Unhelpful Information

By

This project will investigate whether people primarily rely on factual information over other strategies when solving tasks and their capacity to disregard it when it proves unhelpful. In an online game, participants will estimate the needs (e.g., required food amount) of various seal species and adjust their guesses based on feedback (e.g., “too much,” “too little”). Each trial’s correct answer will serve as the prior clue for the next. We will study two conditions: “same need”, where all prior clues relate to sleep-time, and “different needs”, where the clues vary. We hypothesize that in the “same need” condition, participants will initially favor prior clues to estimate seals’ sleep-time needs but will gradually deviate as these clues prove unhelpful for quickly finding the correct response. However, in the “different needs” condition, participants are more likely to initially select a middle-range value on the slider, as using the middle point strategy halves the range of potential answers and prior information is clearly irrelevant to the current task. In a subsequent exploratory phase, we will examine the extent to which improved performance in the “same needs” condition is associated with participants’ ability to suppress interference from prior numeric clues and their conscious perception of these clues’ irrelevance. Unlike traditional anchoring effect studies focused on single responses, this project examines the influence of prior information in problem-solving contexts where participants can continuously evaluate its utility and explore alternative strategies.

25On The Role Of Symmetry In Solving Maximum Lifetime Problem In Two-dimensional Sensor Networks

By

We analyze a continuous and discrete symmetries of the maximum lifetime problem in two dimensional sensor networks. We show, how a symmetry of the network and invariance of the problem under a given transformation group $G$ can be utilized to simplify its solution. We prove, that for a $G$-invariant maximum lifetime problem there exists a $G$-invariant solution. Constrains which follow from the $G$-invariance allow to reduce the problem and its solution to a subset, an optimal fundamental region of the sensor network. We analyze in detail solutions of the maximum lifetime problem invariant under a group of isometry transformations of a two dimensional Euclidean plane.

26Solving Fermion Sign Problem In Quantum Monte Carlo By Majorana Representation

By

In this paper, we discover a new quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) method to solve the fermion sign problem in interacting fermion models by employing Majorana representation of complex fermions. We call it "Majorana QMC" (MQMC). Especially, MQMC is fermion sign free in simulating a class of spinless fermion models on bipartite lattices at half filling and with arbitrary range of (unfrustrated) interactions. To the best of our knowledge, MQMC is the first auxiliary field QMC method to solve fermion sign problem in spinless (more generally, odd number of species) fermion models. MQMC simulations can be performed efficiently both at finite and zero temperatures. We believe that MQMC could pave a new avenue to solve fermion sign problem in more generic fermionic models.

29Solving The Optimal Trading Trajectory Problem Using A Quantum Annealer

By

We solve a multi-period portfolio optimization problem using D-Wave Systems' quantum annealer. We derive a formulation of the problem, discuss several possible integer encoding schemes, and present numerical examples that show high success rates. The formulation incorporates transaction costs (including permanent and temporary market impact), and, significantly, the solution does not require the inversion of a covariance matrix. The discrete multi-period portfolio optimization problem we solve is significantly harder than the continuous variable problem. We present insight into how results may be improved using suitable software enhancements, and why current quantum annealing technology limits the size of problem that can be successfully solved today. The formulation presented is specifically designed to be scalable, with the expectation that as quantum annealing technology improves, larger problems will be solvable using the same techniques.

31A New Semi-analytical Approach For Numerical Solving Of Cauchy Problem For Functional Differential Equations

By

One of the major challenges of contemporary mathematics is numerical solving of various problems for functional differential equations (FDE), in particular Cauchy problem for delayed and neutral differential equations. Recently large variety of methods to handle this task appeared. In the paper, we present new semi-analytical approach for FDE's consisting in combination of the method of steps and a technique called differential transformation method (DTM). This approach reduces the original Cauchy problem for delayed or neutral differential equation to Cauchy problem for ordinary differential equation for which DTM is convenient and efficient method. Moreover, there is no need of any symbolic calculations or initial approximation guesstimates in contrast to methods like homotopy analysis method, homotopy perturbation method, variational iteration method or Adomian decomposition method. The efficiency of the proposed method is shown on certain classes of FDE's with multiple constant delays including FDE of neutral type. We also compare it to the current approach of using DTM and the Adomian decomposition method where Cauchy problem is not well posed.

32Structure Preserving Parallel Algorithms For Solving The Bethe-Salpeter Eigenvalue Problem

By

The Bethe-Salpeter eigenvalue problem is a dense structured eigenvalue problem arising from discretized Bethe-Salpeter equation in the context of computing exciton energies and states. A computational challenge is that at least half of the eigenvalues and the associated eigenvectors are desired in practice. We establish the equivalence between Bethe-Salpeter eigenvalue problems and real Hamiltonian eigenvalue problems. Based on theoretical analysis, structure preserving algorithms for a class of Bethe-Salpeter eigenvalue problems are proposed. We also show that for this class of problems all eigenvalues obtained from the Tamm-Dancoff approximation are overestimated. In order to solve large scale problems of practical interest, we discuss parallel implementations of our algorithms targeting distributed memory systems. Several numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of our algorithms.

35Applications Of Fractional Calculus In Solving Abel-type Integral Equations: Surface-volume Reaction Problem

By

In this paper we consider a class of partial integro-differential equations of fractional order, motivated by an equation which arises as a result of modeling surface-volume reactions in optical biosensors. We solve these equations by employing techniques from fractional calculus; several examples are discussed. Furthermore, for the first time, we encounter an order of the fractional derivative other than $\frac{1}{2}$ in an applied problem. Hence, in this paper we explore the applicability of fractional calculus in real-world applications, further strengthening the true nature of fractional calculus.

36A Small-Order-Polynomial-Sized Linear Program For Solving The Traveling Salesman Problem

By

We present a polynomial-sized linear program (LP) for the n-city TSP drawing upon "complex flow" modeling ideas by the first two authors who used an O(n^9)xO(n^8) model*. Here we have only O(n^5) variables and O(n^4) constraints. We do not model explicit cycles of the cities, and our modeling does not involve the city-to-city variables-based, traditional TSP polytope referred to in the literature as "The TSP Polytope." Optimal TSP objective value and tours are achieved by solving our proposed LP. In the case of a unique optimum, the integral solution representing the optimal tour is obtained using any LP solver (solution algorithm). In the case of alternate optima, an LP solver (e.g., an interior-point solver) may stop with a fractional (interior-point) solution, which (we prove) is a convex combination of alternate optimal TSP tours. In such cases, one of the optimal tours can be trivially retrieved from the solution using a simple iterative elimination procedure we propose. We have solved over a million problems with up to 27 cities using the barrier methods of CPLEX, consistently obtaining all integer solutions. Since LP is solvable in polynomial time and we have a model which is of polynomial size in n, the paper is thus offering (although, incidentally) a proof of the equality of the computational complexity classes "P" and "NP". The non-applicability and numerical refutations of existing extended formulations results (such as Braun et al. (2015) or Fiorini et al. (2015) in particular) are briefly discussed in an appendix. [*: Advances in Combinatorial Optimization: Linear Programming Formulation of the Traveling Salesman and Other Hard Combinatorial Optimization Problems (World Scientific, January 2016).]

37Error Bounds On The Probabilistically Optimal Problem Solving Strategy

By

We consider a simple optimal probabilistic problem solving strategy that searches through potential solution candidates in a specific order. We are interested in what impact has interchanging the order of two solution candidates with respect to this optimal strategy on the problem solving effectivity (i.e., the solution candidates examined as well as time spent before solving the problem). Such interchange can happen in the applications with only partial information available. We derive bounds on these errors in general as well as in three special systems in which we impose some restrictions on the solution candidates.

39Solving The Imaging Problem With Coherently Integrated Multiwavelength Data

By

Recovering images from optical interferometric observations is one of the major challenges in the field. Unlike the case of observations at radio wavelengths, in the optical the atmospheric turbulence changes the phases on a very short time scale, which results in corrupted phase measurements. In order to overcome these limitations, several groups developed image reconstruction techniques based only on squared visibility and closure phase information, which are unaffected by atmospheric turbulence. We present the results of two techniques used by our group, which employed coherently integrated data from the Navy Prototype Optical Interferometer. Based on these techniques we were able to recover complex visibilities for several sources and image them using standard radio imaging software. We describe these techniques, the corrections applied to the data, present the images of a few sources, and discuss the implications of these results.

40Solving The Two-center Nuclear Shell-model Problem With Arbitrarily-orientated Deformed Potentials

By

A general new technique to solve the two-center problem with arbitrarily-orientated deformed realistic potentials is demonstrated, which is based on the powerful potential separable expansion method. As an example, molecular single-particle spectra for $^{12}$C + $^{12}$C $\to$ $^{24}$Mg are calculated using deformed Woods-Saxon potentials. These clearly show that non-axial symmetric configurations play a crucial role in molecular resonances observed in reaction processes for this system at low energy.

50Applications Of 3D CISS Sequence For Problem Solving In Neuroimaging.

By

This article is from The Indian Journal of Radiology & Imaging , volume 21 . Abstract Three-dimensional (3D) constructive interference in steady state (CISS) is a gradient-echo MRI sequence that is used to investigate a wide range of pathologies when routine MRI sequences do not provide the desired anatomic information. The increased sensitivity of the 3D CISS sequence is an outcome of the accentuation of the T2 values between cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and pathological structures. Apart from its well-recognized applications in the evaluation of the cranial nerves, CSF rhinorrhea and aqueduct stenosis, we have found the CISS sequence to be useful for the cisternal spaces, cavernous sinuses and the ventricular system, where it is useful for detecting subtle CSF-intensity lesions that may be missed on routine spin-echo sequences. This information helps in the management of these conditions. After a brief overview of the physics behind this sequence, we illustrate its clinical applications with representative cases and discuss its potential role in imaging protocols.
