The demand for very high speed data processing coupled with falling hardware costs has made large-scale parallel and distributed computer systems both desirable and feasible. Two modes of parallel processing are single instruction stream-multiple data stream (SIMD) and multiple instruction stream - multiple data stream (MIMD). PASM, a partitionable SIMD/MIMD system, is a reconfigurable multimicroprocessor system being designed for image processing and pattern recognition. An important component of these systems is the interconnection network, the mechanism for communication among the computation nodes and memories. Assuring high reliability for such complex systems is a significant task. Thus, a crucial practical aspect of an interconnection network is fault tolerance. In answer to this need, the Extra Stage Cube (ESC), a fault-tolerant, multistage cube-type interconnection network, is defined. The fault tolerance of the ESC is explored for both single and multiple faults, routing tags are defined, and consideration is given to permuting data and partitioning the ESC in the presence of faults. The ESC is compared with other fault-tolerant multistage networks. Finally, reliability of the ESC and an enhanced version of it are investigated. Keywords: Theses.

With three years of AFOSR support we have completed several major projects in the area of parallel processing. Farhat has led efforts in aerospace engineering,especially in the implementation of structural computations on MPP systems. McBryan has led efforts in the area of performance evaluation and in the application of MPP systems to fluid dynamical applications. A total of 81 papers were written describing, and acknowledging, AFOSR supported research. These are listed in section A.4, B.4, C.1.1 and C.222.3. Six graduate students and three postdoctoral researcher were supported under the grant. The report will be organized along the lines of the two principal research efforts: MPP applications and MPP performance evaluation.

Advances in device and packaging technologies are producing incremental gains in the performance of computer systems. However, these gains are being more than offset by new applications having a need to process large data sets, a need real-time computation, or other requirements which make them prohibitively expensive to perform on conventional computer systems. This has forced computer architects to consider parallel/distributed computer designs. In Part I of this thesis, the strengths and weaknesses of a variety of existing and proposed parallel computer designs are examined. These characteristics are used to motivate and support the design decisions made for a particular parallel computer architecture, PASM. It is PASM that is the primary focus of the work in this thesis.

A Fast Reduced Instruction Set Computer is designed using the Rockwell 50 GHz Baseline GaAs/AlGaAs Heterojunction Bipolar Transistor Process. Tbe goal of the project is a 1OOO NIPS integer RISC engine in the form of a multiple chip integration using MCM technology. Cell libraries and CAD tools for this effort have been created and tested. Test structures have been fabricated and tested which indicate that the general approach is viable, and all architecture chips have been completed. However, certain process deficiencies could lead to circuit performance that is slower than predicted from Rockwell supplied models by a factor of 30-50%. In spite of this, 'work-around' strategies have been devised and it is felt that the Rockwell process can still achieve the speed goal of 2 GHz clock operation. These strategies consist of altering the layout of the transistor using a smaller emitter with a larger aspect ratio, and three active edges, and some shortening of base-emitter and base colleccor separations, and variation of the wire geometries or shifting to the third level of metal for them.
