1Clinical Utility Of An Observation And Response Chart With Human Factors Design Characteristics And A Track And Trigger System: Study Protocol For A Two-Phase Multisite Multiple-Methods Design.

This article is from JMIR Research Protocols , volume 3 . Abstract Background: Clinical deterioration of adult patients in acute medical-surgical wards continues to occur, despite a range of systems and processes designed to minimize this risk. In Australia, a standardized template for adult observation charts using human factors design principles and decision-support characteristics was developed to improve the detection of and response to abnormal vital signs. Objective: To describe the study protocol for the clinical testing of these observation and response charts (ORCs). Methods: We propose a two-phase multisite multiple-methods design to test the initial clinical utility of the charts in 10 hospitals of differing types and sizes across state jurisdictions in Australia. Data collection in the first phase includes user surveys, observations and field notes by project officers, handover de-briefs (short interviews with small groups of staff), and an audit of ORC documentation completion compared to the site’s existing observation chart. For the second phase, data will be collected using a retrospective audit of observation documentation from the previous hospital observation chart, prospective audit of observation documentation following implementation of the selected ORC, user focus groups, observational field notes, and patient outcome data from routinely collected organizational data sources. Results: Site selection and preparation, project officer training, chart selection and implementation, participant recruitment, and data collection has been completed and the analysis of these results are in progress. Conclusions: This detailed description of these study methods and data collection approaches will enable a comprehensive assessment of the clinical utility of these newly developed track and trigger charts and will be useful for clinicians and researchers when planning and implementing similar studies. Potential methodological limitations are also noted.

2Comparison Of Columnar Water Vapor Measurements During The Fall 1997 ARM Intensive Observation Period: Solar Transmittance Methods

In the fall of 1997, during an Intensive Observation Period (IOP), the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) program conducted a study of water vapor abundance measurement at its Southern Great Plains (SGP) site. Among a large number of instruments, four sun-tracking radiometers were present to measure the columnar water vapor (CWV). All four solar radiometers retrieve CWV by measuring total solar transmittance in the 0.94-gm water vapor absorption band and subtracting contributions due to Rayleigh, ozone and aerosol transmittances. The aerosol optical depth comparisons among the same four radiometers has been presented elsewhere (Geophys. Res. Lett., 26, 17, 2725-2728, 1999). We have used three different methods to retrieve CWV. In a first round of comparison no attempt was made to standardize on the same radiative transfer model and its underlying water vapor spectroscopy. In the second round of comparison we used the same line-by-line code (which includes recently corrected H2O spectroscopy) to retrieve CAN from all four suntracking radiometers. This decreased the mean CWV by 8% or 13%. The spread of 8% in the solar radiometer results found when using the same model is an indication of the other-than-model uncertainties involved in determining CWV from solar transmittance measurements with current instrumentation.

6ERIC ED128101: A Comparison Of Teacher Attitude Toward Two Methods Of Identifying Children With Learning Problems: Informal Observation And Structured Observation.

This dissertation study examined the hypothesis that kindergarten teachers in Rockville, Maryland, perceive that they can identify children with potential or actual learning disabilities as effectively by informal observation techniques as by the use of the structured Maryland Systematic Teacher Observation Instrument (MSTOI). A survey instrument was developed for the collection of data. Analyses were made of the information in the responses for frequency, percentages, and significant differences. The findings indicated that 95 percent of the teachers perceived themselves as competent to identify children with learning problems by informal observation. The study compared attitudes toward the effectiveness of the two methods of identification. A chi-square of 2.53 was found, which was not significant at the .05 level of significance, with 1 degree of freedom. Thus, the major hypothesis was supported. Analysis of related factors revealed perceptions of advantages and disadvantages of the two methods. It was recommended that resources be redirected toward delivery of services to children and that the structured observation instrument be revised. The document includes a review of literature related to learning problems and the role of the kindergarten teacher in diagnosis and remediation. Appendixed are materials and instruments used in the study, an example of the chi-square analysis, and a selected bibliography.

This final volume of a six-volume study of an elementary school called "Kensington" in a school district code-named "Milford," examines its own assumptions and procedures. After the brief, introductory chapter, which presents the methodological appendixes of the preceding volumes as a serial, chapter 2 discusses exploratory and final proposals for the study and its followup relation to an early study ("Middletown in Transition"). Chapter 3, "Ethnography as an Intellectual Process," examines the study's evolving logic; accidents, anomalies, and serendipity; the observer's role; and archival case records. Chapter 4 expands the third chapter's focus on ethnography to include separate sections on "Ethnography,""Ethnography and Historical Method," and "Educational Innovation and Life History." This final volume concludes with a chapter on "Paradigms in Debate." In order to protect the anonymity of the school district studied in such detail, pseudonyms have been used for all place names (school, school district, city, county, state) and personal names (school superintendents, school board members, teachers, students) appearing in the various volumes of this set. 8Comparison Of Midwifery Students' Satisfaction With Direct Observation Of Procedural Skills And Current Methods In Evaluation Of Procedural Skills In Mashhad Nursing And Midwifery School.

This article is from Iranian Journal of Nursing and Midwifery Research , volume 18 . Abstract Background:: The clinical evaluation, as one of the most important elements in medical education, must measure students’ competencies and abilities. The implementation of any assessment tool is basically dependent on the acceptance of students. This study tried to assess midwifery students’ satisfaction with Direct Observation of Procedural Skills (DOPS) and current clinical evaluation methods. Materials and Methods:: This quasi-experimental study was conducted in the university hospitals affiliated to Mashhad University of Medical Sciences. The subjects comprised 67 undergraduate midwifery students selected by convenience sampling and allocated to control and intervention groups according to the training transposition. Current method was performed in the control group, and DOPS was conducted in the intervention group. The applied tools included DOPS rating scales, logbook, and satisfaction questionnaires with clinical evaluation methods. Validity and reliability of these tools were approved. At the end of training, students’ satisfaction with the evaluation methods was assessed by the mentioned tools. The data were analyzed by descriptive and analytical statistics. Results:: Satisfaction mean scores of midwifery students with DOPS and current methods were 76.7 ± 12.9 and 62.6 ± 14.7 (out of 100), respectively. DOPS students’ satisfaction mean score was significantly higher than the score obtained in current method (P < 0.000). The most satisfactory domains in the current method were “consistence with learning objectives” (71.2 ± 14.9) and “objectiveness” in DOPS (87.9 ± 15.0). In contrast, the least satisfactory domains in the current method were “interested in applying the method” (57.8 ± 26.5) and “number of assessments for each skill” (58.8 ± 25.9) in DOPS method. Conclusions:: This study showed that DOPS method is associated with greater students’ satisfaction. Since the students’ satisfaction with the current method was also acceptable, we recommend combining this new clinical evaluation method with the current method, which covers its weaknesses, to promote the students’ satisfaction with clinical evaluation methods in a perfect manner.

The purposes of this research were to: (1) gather information about attributes of methods course teaching that make it more or less effective, (2) compare the perspectives of instructors and students on attributes of effectiveness, and (3) understand more about how university teachers develop an understanding of the thinking of prospective teachers. The data came from two sources: two faculty who observed each other's elementary methods classes, and end-of-course student evaluations. Results from the two faculty are discussed separately. The data of the study seemed clearly to point out that faculty's having a coherent vision of instruction was not sufficient to impact the learning of students. That vision must at least be communicated to students. Without sharing of perspectives, neither students nor faculty gains a full understanding of what the other party is about. (MKR)

In the fall of 1997, during an Intensive Observation Period (IOP), the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) program conducted a study of water vapor abundance measurement at its Southern Great Plains (SGP) site. Among a large number of instruments, four sun-tracking radiometers were present to measure the columnar water vapor (CWV). All four solar radiometers retrieve CWV by measuring total solar transmittance in the 0.94-gm water vapor absorption band and subtracting contributions due to Rayleigh, ozone and aerosol transmittances. The aerosol optical depth comparisons among the same four radiometers has been presented elsewhere (Geophys. Res. Lett., 26, 17, 2725-2728, 1999). We have used three different methods to retrieve CWV. In a first round of comparison no attempt was made to standardize on the same radiative transfer model and its underlying water vapor spectroscopy. In the second round of comparison we used the same line-by-line code (which includes recently corrected H2O spectroscopy) to retrieve CAN from all four suntracking radiometers. This decreased the mean CWV by 8% or 13%. The spread of 8% in the solar radiometer results found when using the same model is an indication of the other-than-model uncertainties involved in determining CWV from solar transmittance measurements with current instrumentation.

The Haughton-Mars expedition is a multidisciplinary project, exploring an impact crater in an extreme environment to determine how people might live and work on Mars. The expedition seeks to understand and field test Mars facilities, crew roles, operations, and computer tools. I combine an ethnographic approach to establish a baseline understanding of how scientists prefer to live and work when relatively unemcumbered, with a participatory design approach of experimenting with procedures and tools in the context of use. This paper focuses on field methods for systematically recording and analyzing the expedition's activities. Systematic photography and time-lapse video are combined with concept mapping to organize and present information. This hybrid approach is generally applicable to the study of modern field expeditions having a dozen or more multidisciplinary participants, spread over a large terrain during multiple field seasons.

This study compared 5 scoring methods in terms of their statistical assumptions. They were then used to score the Teacher Observation of Classroom Adaptation Checklist, a measure consisting of 3 subscales and 21 Likert-type items. The 5 methods used were (a) sum/average scores of items,(b) latent factor scores with continuous indicators, (c) latent factor scores with ordered categorical indicators using the mean- and variance-adjusted weighted least squares estimation method,(d) latent factor scores with ordered categorical indicators using the full information maximum likelihood estimation method, and (e) multidimensional graded response model using the Bock-Aitkin expectation-maximization estimation procedure. Measurement invariance between gender groups and between free/reduced-price lunch status groups was evaluated with the second, third, fourth, and fifth methods. This report describes progress on a new approach for improving man- machine communication. The goal of the work is to significantly expand and diversify the capabilities of the computer interfaces that people use. The approach is first to design computer processes that can assimilate particular aspects of dialogue between people, then to transfer these processes into man-machine communication. The approach requires that particular aspects of the human ability to communicate be selected and studied in detail. This report describes new methods of data collection developed to meet this need and tells how they will be used. The report focuses on nine phenomena of human dialogue which have been selected from approximately 23 phenomena proposed and explored. For most of the nine, explicit observational instructions are given as well.

The research developed the fundamental techniques of the emulsion chamber methods that permit measurements of the composition and energy spectra of cosmic rays at energies ranging from 1 GeV/n to over 1,000 TeV/n. The research program consisted of exploring new principles and techniques in measuring very high energy cosmic nuclei with large-area emulsion chambers for high statistics experiments. These tasks have been accomplished and their use was essential in successful analysis of the balloon-borne emulsion chamber experiments up to 10(exp 14) eV. It also provided the fundamental technologies for designing large-area detectors that are aimed at measuring the composition at above 1015 eV region. The latter is now partially succeeded by a NASA Mission Concept, Advanced Cosmic Composition Experiments on the Space Station (ACCESS). The cosmic ray group at the University of Alabama in Huntsville has performed technological R & D as well as contributing to the Japanese-American-Emulsion-Chamber-Experiments (JACEE) Collaboration with the regular data analysis. While primary research support for other institutions' efforts in the JACEE experiments came from NSF and DOE, primary support for the University of Alabama in Huntsville was this contract. Supplemental tasks to standardize the data base and hardware upgrades (automatized microscope) had this institutions cooperation. Investigation of new techniques in this program consisted of development of a fast calorimetry, magnetic/scattering selection of high momentum tracks for a pairmeter, and high statistics momentum measurements for low energy nuclei (E &lt; 1 TeV/n). The highest energy calorimetry and a pairmeter have been considered as strawman instruments by the GOAL (Galactic Origin and Acceleration Limit) proposal of the NASA Cosmic Ray Working Group for long- duration balloon flights. We accomplished the objectives of the GOAL program with three circumpolar, Antarctic JACEE balloon flights during 1992 - 1994.

The National Longitudinal School Database (NLSD) comprises three files, making up a near-census of all schools and districts in the United States from school years 1990-91 to 2019-20. The three files are the Public School File, Private School File, and District File. As evident by the titles, the first two files report data at the school-level for both public and private schools. The District File reports data at the public school district-level. We have set up these files so that they can be easily merged together in a variety of ways. This data set is unique in that it allows researchers to examine various aspects of school choice across traditional public schools, charter schools, magnet schools, and private schools. These data have been used to examine changes in and effects of charter schools over time (Chen & Harris, 2022) as well as trends and predictors of school closures (Harris & Martinez-Pabon, 2023). This Codebook provides documentation on the sources and methods used to create the first release of the NLSD. It is organized into three sections, corresponding to the three NSLD files (Public, Private, District). Each of the three data files are in a "long" format, such that each row observation provides data for a given school (or school district) in a given school year (1990-1991 through 2019-2020). The accompanying Appendix spreadsheet describes the variables in each data set in more detail, including information on years available, number of observations, ranges, blanks and missing data, and data source.
