Episode 7 discusses the importance of networking for entrepreneurs. Networking is one of the business approaches that contributes to entrepreneursÊ success. If entrepreneurs have very good networking with both external and internal customers, it will be easier for them to gain business opportunities and overcome some of the problems related to their business. This is because good networking relationships will enable them to gain support and cooperation from the networking circle. Therefore, every entrepreneur should develop networking skills to achieve their business goals and objectives.

David Burkus, a professor at Oral Roberts University and author of the book \"Friend of a Friend,\" explains common misconceptions about networking. First, trading business cards at a networking event doesn't mean you're a phony. Second, your most valuable contacts are actually the people you already know. Burkus says some of the most useful networking you can do involves strengthening your ties with old friends and current coworkers.

She earned her Doctorate of Business Administration from Harvard Business School, where her research focused on consumer psychology and interpersonal communication. Over the course of her career, Andrea worked in brand management, she taught in the MBA program at the U of T, and she served on several boards. She is also the host of the popular bi-weekly \"Talk About Talk\" podcast. In this talk, I present an overview of three projects in my research group. The PRIME project focuses on fundamental issues in the design and evaluations of P2P streaming mechanisms. I present a few studies in the context of this project including (i) design of a scalable mesh-based P2P streaming mechanism for scalable delivery of live video, (ii) a comparative study between mesh-based and tree-based approaches to live P2P streaming, and (iii) the importance of packet scheduling schemes in mesh-based P2Pstreaming mechanisms. The goal of IonP2P project is to investigate and develop new measurement and modeling methodologies to understand and accurately characterize properties and dynamics of large scale P2P systems. First I show that the key challenge in accurately characterizing large scale P2P systems is to capture their representative (i.e. unbiased) 'snapshots'. I demonstrate how different factors can introduce bias into the selection of representative samples of peer properties (e.g. degree, link bandwidth). Then, I present design and evaluation of a couple of theoretically-grounded techniques for unbiased sampling of dynamic graphs. I provide a summary of the empirical characterizations of several unstructured and structured P2P systems. The third project that we recently started, tackles the empirical characterization of online social networks (OSN). I discuss the motivations and challenges in characterizing OSNs, then sketch an array of issues that we plan to explore in this area and present some of our preliminary results. ©2008 Microsoft Corporation. Even commercial router vendors have adopted randomized algorithms in a few cases because of their simplicity, speed, and memory-efficiency in a few cases. Further, because of the opportunity to see every member of population (i.e., every arriving packet) and preserve summary information about the entire population, such randomized algorithms can obtain an "edge" over standard algorithms that merely sample the population. I illustrate this thesis by three algorithms. First, I will describe a simple algorithm for finding sources that send a large proportion of traffic, and its application in a worm detection chip. Second, I will describe an algorithm that provides an inexpensive technique for measuring the average and variance of packet latencies and loss on a link. By contrast, the majority of routers have no support for fine-grained latency measurement; managers must instead rely on approximate methods such as sending probe packets or using "tomographic" techniques. If time permits, I will describe a third algorithm which allows scalable logging, say of millions of network addresses infected after an attack, using only a small amount of memory. Social networking sites (SNS) have recently used by millions of people all over the world. An SNS is a society on the Internet, where people communicate and foster friendship with each other. We examine a nation-wide SNS (more than six million users at present), mutually acknowledged friendship network with third million people and nearly two million links. By employing a community-extracting method developed by Newman and others, we found that there exists a range of community-sizes in which only few communities are detected. This novel feature cannot be explained by previous growth models of networks. We present a simple model with two processes of acquaintance, connecting nearest neighbors and random linkage. We show that the model can explain the gap in the community-size distribution as well as other statistical properties including long-tail degree distribution, high transitivity, its correlation with degree, and degree-degree correlation. The model can estimate how the two processes, which are ubiquitous in many social networks, are working with relative frequencies in the SNS as well as other societies.

Twitter is often referred to as a backchannel for conferences. While the main conference takes place in a physical setting, attendees and virtual attendees socialize, introduce new ideas or broadcast information by microblogging on Twitter. In this paper we analyze the scholars' Twitter use in 16 Computer Science conferences over a timespan of five years. Our primary finding is that over the years there are increasing differences with respect to conversation use and information use in Twitter. We studied the interaction network between users to understand whether assumptions about the structure of the conversations hold over time and between different types of interactions, such as retweets, replies, and mentions. While `people come and people go', we want to understand what keeps people stay with the conference on Twitter. By casting the problem to a classification task, we find different factors that contribute to the continuing participation of users to the online Twitter conference activity. These results have implications for research communities to implement strategies for continuous and active participation among members.

There has been significant interest in the networking community on the impact of cascade effects on the diffusion of networking technology upgrades in the Internet. Thinking of the global Internet as a graph, where each node represents an economically-motivated Internet Service Provider (ISP), a key problem is to determine the smallest set of nodes that can trigger a cascade that causes every other node in the graph to adopt the protocol. We design the first approximation algorithm with a provable performance guarantee for this problem, in a model that captures the following key issue: a node's decision to upgrade should be influenced by the decisions of the remote nodes it wishes to communicate with. Given an internetwork G(V,E) and threshold function \theta, we assume that node $u$ activates (upgrades to the new technology) when it is adjacent to a connected component of active nodes in G of size exceeding node $u$'s threshold \theta(u). Our objective is to choose the smallest set of nodes that can cause the rest of the graph to activate. Our main contribution is an approximation algorithm based on linear programming, which we complement with computational hardness results and a near-optimum integrality gap. Our algorithm, which does not rely on submodular optimization techniques, also highlights the substantial algorithmic difference between our problem and similar questions studied in the context of social networks.

A fundamental aspect in performance engineering of wireless networks is optimizing the set of links that can be concurrently activated to meet given signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio (SINR) thresholds. The solution of this combinatorial problem is the key element in scheduling and cross-layer resource management. Previous works on link activation assume single-user decoding receivers, that treat interference in the same way as noise. In this paper, we assume multiuser decoding receivers, which can cancel strongly interfering signals. As a result, in contrast to classical spatial reuse, links being close to each other are more likely to be active simultaneously. Our goal here is to deliver a comprehensive theoretical and numerical study on optimal link activation under this novel setup, in order to provide insight into the gains from adopting interference cancellation. We therefore consider the optimal problem setting of successive interference cancellation (SIC), as well as the simpler, yet instructive, case of parallel interference cancellation (PIC). We prove that both problems are NP-hard and develop compact integer linear programming formulations that enable us to approach the global optimum solutions. We provide an extensive numerical performance evaluation, indicating that for low to medium SINR thresholds the improvement is quite substantial, especially with SIC, whereas for high SINR thresholds the improvement diminishes and both schemes perform equally well.

We propose a power-law decay model with autocorrelation for posting data to social networking services concerning particular events such as national holidays or major sport events. In these kinds of events we observe people's interest both before and after the events. In our model the number of postings has a Poisson distribution whose expected value decays as a power law. Our model also incorporates autocorrelations by autoregressive specification of the expected value. We show that our proposed model well fits the data from social networking services.

This paper proposes Navigo, a location based packet forwarding mechanism for vehicular Named Data Networking (NDN). Navigo takes a radically new approach to address the challenges of frequent connectivity disruptions and sudden network changes in a vehicle network. Instead of forwarding packets to a specific moving car, Navigo aims to fetch specific pieces of data from multiple potential carriers of the data. The design provides (1) a mechanism to bind NDN data names to the producers' geographic area(s); (2) an algorithm to guide Interests towards data producers using a specialized shortest path over the road topology; and (3) an adaptive discovery and selection mechanism that can identify the best data source across multiple geographic areas, as well as quickly react to changes in the V2X network.

A seminar was held in March, 1976, at the Association for Educational Communications and Technology (AECT) Annual Convention to discuss the problems of nonprint media selection. The major question raised in the seminar was the extent to which an economical information system to provide qualitative as well as purely technical descriptions of educational media to users was possible. The concerns of users of such a system were addressed by a panel of participants from (1) an education/library group; (2) a United States Government group; (3) an entrepreneurial information group; and (4) a commercial publisher and data system entrepreneur group. The short papers that contain the viewpoints of the 16 panel members are collected for this report, along with an introduction, a summary of findings, a bibliography, and a directory of related organizations.
