This paper will introduce the key concepts of TRW's Reusable Message Based Design Software (Network Architecture Services-NAS) which has proven to be key to the CCPDS-R project's progress to date. The NAS software and supporting tools have provided the CCPDS-R Project team with reliable, powerful building blocks that have been integrated into extensive demonstrations to validate the critical design approaches. The CCPDS-R PDR Demonstration consisted of 130 Ada tasks interconnected via 450 different task to task interfaces, executing in a network of 3 VAX nodes. The extensive reuse of NAS software building blocks and Ada generics resulted in the translation of 120,000 Ada Source lines into over 2 million lines of executable machine language instructions. This paper describes the message based design techniques which drove us to the development of NAS, the capabilities and components inherent in the NAS product, and the CCPDS-R experience in using NAS in a stringent real time command and control environment.

We investigate the dynamical evolution of the terrestrial planets during the planetesimal-driven migration of the giant planets. A basic assumption of this work is that giant planet migration occurred after the completion of terrestrial planet formation, such as in the models that link the former to the origin of the Late Heavy Bombardment. The divergent migration of Jupiter and Saturn causes the g5 eigenfrequency to cross resonances of the form g5=gk with k ranging from 1 to 4. Consequently these secular resonances cause large-amplitude responses in the eccentricities of the terrestrial planets. We show that the resonances g5=g_4 and g5=g3 do not pose a problem if Jupiter and Saturn have a fast approach and departure from their mutual 2:1 mean motion resonance. On the other hand, the resonance crossings g5=g2 and g5=g1 are more of a concern as they tend to yield a terrestrial system incompatible with the current one. We offer two solutions to this problem. The first uses the fact that a secular resonance crossing can also damp the amplitude of a Fourier mode if the latter is large originally. A second scenario involves a 'jumping Jupiter' in which encounters between an ice giant and Jupiter, without ejection of the former, cause the latter to migrate away from Saturn much faster than if migration is driven solely by encounters with planetesimals. In this case, the g5=g2 and g5=g1 resonances can be jumped over, or occur very briefly.

Financial institutions have massive computations to carry out overnight which are very demanding in terms of the consumed CPU. The challenge is to price many different products on a cluster-like architecture. We have used the Premia software to valuate the financial derivatives. In this work, we explain how Premia can be embedded into Nsp, a scientific software like Matlab, to provide a powerful tool to valuate a whole portfolio. Finally, we have integrated an MPI toolbox into Nsp to enable to use Premia to solve a bunch of pricing problems on a cluster. This unified framework can then be used to test different parallel architectures.

The crossing of mutual mean motion resonances by the planets would excite their orbital eccentricities but not their orbital inclinations. Moreover, the amplitudes of the eigenmodes characterising the current secular evolution of the eccentricities of Jupiter and Saturn would not be reproduced correctly; only one eigenmode is excited by resonance-crossing. We show that, at the very least, encounters between Saturn and one of the ice giants (Uranus or Neptune) need to have occurred, in order to reproduce the current secular properties of the giant planets, in particular the amplitude of the two strongest eigenmodes in the eccentricities of Jupiter and Saturn.
